May is Rider Safety Awareness Month for the good reason that many people start riding again after not riding very much (or at all) during winter. Skills deteriorate during this long time without the rider realizing it. Take it easy for the first few rides and consider taking a road skills course to refresh muscle memory. Invest time and effort to learn advanced skills such as trail braking.
Riding is inherently a dangerous sport, and those dangers can multiply in group riding. Never ride beyond your skill level and experience, and NEVER try to keep up with others. Always ride at your own pace. For fast turns, remember to never go in too hot, but at a controlled speed and then power out. Watch out for decreasing radius turns.
