Panchayats are really no value in present time. No body cares about what they say . Female and male keep their mobile phone and wear jeans.

Panchayat dictation horrors are more of media construct to amuse urban dwellers.

Media needs a punching bag and such panchayats are easy target.

this country is full of such people, can't blame them since India is mainly a Patriarchal society. But to suggest that people listen to such ideas and actually follow such diktats is ridiculous.

Tarun Tejpal was invited as a guest speaker in ToI Lit fest. no one made a hue and cry about it in media because he was one of them. A rape accused out on bail being invited as a guest speak didn't raised eye brows. It was the social media pressure which made them to cancel his invite and the explanation they gave for it was nothing short of pure brilliance

It's the poor villagers who catch the wrath of "Liberal" media. True such things must be brought out in light and such people need to be shamed but don't do it selectively.

GOPALGANJ: A village panchayat in Bihar's Gopalganj district has, in a diktat, banned girls from wearing jeans and using mobile phones as these increase the chance of the girls "going astray".

Confirming that such a diktat has been issued in Singha panchayat in Hathua block of the district, Hathua block development officer Jitendra Kumar said the decision was taken at a general meeting of panchayat officials in which mukhiya Krishna Chaudhary and sarpanch Vinay Kumar Shrivastav were present.

"According to the panchayat decision, the ban will be enforced within its jurisdiction with mutual understanding and without any coercion," the BDO said.

Mukhiya Krishna Chaudhary said jeans, trousers, and cell phones for girls have been banned as these have "pernicious effect" on them - mentally and physically. These also increase the chance of their "going astray".

"The ban will come into effect from January 1, 2015. We have already requested parents and guardians in our area not to buy jeans and mobile phones for girls in their families. There will be no coercion in enforcing the ban," Chaudhary said.

There are no provisions to fine or punish if anybody flouts the ban, he added.
