Again, in Himachal Pradesh: we were on a school hike, seven of us, walking from School in Sanawar to Shimla (66 km or so), started in the evening around 4 pm. By nightfall we were in the hills, lost as hell. Nobody around. We saw a light, like a mashaal (fire torch) a distance off. Looking for directions, we went after it. It kept going away. We ran faster, but it went faster and faster. Spent 1 1/2 hr running after it, it took us into a valley, we got scratched by thorns, bloodied and miserable. Then it just disappeared, poof. Somehow managed to find the main road, fell asleep somewhere and took a bus to Shimla in the morning.
Next day, we found out that the mashaal is a form of a wandering spirit, quite common in the hills. We would've had a heart attack if we'd known........
