S Vice President Joe Biden will reach Islamabad on a short unscheduled visit on Tuesday from Afghanistan, to offer an economic, military and intelligence package for Pakistan, which is deeply mired in fighting terrorism both at its borders and within.The United States (US) Vice President will meet Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvaiz Kayani and discuss Pakistan’s economic situation, efforts to confront extremism and terrorism and future strategy on Afghanistan, an official source told APP.Biden will extend support to Pakistan to help strengthen its economy, improve governance and security, and respond to its development needs, according to a US administration official. Pakistani leadership is likely to apprise the US Vice President of their concerns in addressing the grave economic issues that have come to the fore due to diversion of national resources in fighting terrorism and extremism. Prime Minister Gilani and Vice President Biden would review the US-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue aimed at improving mutual trust and promote stability of Pakistan. Early disbursement of annual US 1.5 billion dollar financial assitance would also figure in the talks. Pakistan has been seeking assistance from the Untied States for its socio-economic sector, with particular focus on development of communication links, health, education and creation of employment opportunities for its youth, in a bid to sway away those living on the fringes of extremism. The assassination of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer and the counter terrorism measures taken by country’s law enforcement agencies would also be discussed in the talks. Biden has been keeping in touch with the Pakistani leadership frequently. He last telephoned Prime Minister Gilani in September to assure the US government’s full support to Pakistan in the aftermath of the worst ever floods. The leaders would also discuss the Afghanistan and Pakistan annual review concluded recently. There is a growing understanding in the United States that Pakistan needs more economic assistance to address the deep rooted problems related to militancy and extremism, fermenting due to lack of economic activity and opportunities. He would also discuss ways to strengthen dialogue with Pakistan and Afghanistan for greater regional stability. The US is also planning to host another session of the US-Afghanistan-Pakistan Foreign Ministers dialogue . Biden’s visit becomes more significant as it follows the visit of Burhanuddin Rabbani, head of Afghan High Council for Peace, who met Pakistani leaders to discuss a future course of Afghanistan.

Long term security and personal safety for innocent villagers in the frontier areas has to come concurrently with digging wells, building clinics, housing, and factories or small service businesses which in turn create local jobs and build the local tax base to eventually help self fund local government projects and public needs there.

Merely telling villages to raise their own troops and defend themselves has not been working well...various websites I read and contribute to occasionally say that threats and violent actions agaist local laskars family members make them insecure...and prove that some national forces permanently stationed in the area are still needed.

Nothing is more frustrating and fruitless than to win a skirmish, run the Taliban out, then leave and the Taliban come back all over again.

you simply cannot get the type of victory you think you can get, the taliban represent ethnic pashtun resistance, and your own former CIA chief in the region acknowledges this.

what this vicious cycle of violence is doing is messing up pakistan.

Pakistan was not founded on nor for radical heretical version of terrorist Islam.

Blasphemy laws are atrocious and undemocratic, as is radical Islam.

Pakistan, if it is survive as a nation, has to hue to moderation and follow the original 1950 era founding Constitution which guaranteed all religions freedom and existance inside the predominately moderate Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Those who favor a return of Musharraf should understand he basically stood while President for law and order over anarchy.

However, I would favor, still the PPP and any other political parties who want and try to build up the individual vote, the franchise if you will, to further the cause of democracy as uniquely fits the circumstances of and inside Paksitan.

I had hoped some of the hotheaded youthful writers on this site would have read the Pakhtun Declaration I copied and pasted here 24 hours ago from the Pakhtun website GLOBAL HUJRA ONLINE. They are making good sense as young Pakhtuns on that site.

Biden arrives in Pakistan for talks​

(Reuters) - Vice President Joe Biden will pressure Pakistan to intensify its crackdown on militants in talks on Wednesday with Pakistan's leadership, but will tread carefully to avoid further straining ties.

Biden arrived in Islamabad after two days in Kabul, where he said on Tuesday that Pakistan needed to do more to help the United States in its battle against Taliban and other militants in Afghanistan as it prepares to withdraw its troops from there.

"It's going to require more pressure -- more pressure on the Taliban, from Pakistan's side of the border, than we've been -- we've been able to exert so far. And there are many hard days that lie ahead," Biden said at a joint news conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Pakistan's tribal areas along the Afghan border are believed to harbour senior militants from al Qaeda and the Taliban, as well as a form a training ground for insurgents who cross over the porous frontier. Pakistan's military has launched several offensives in the area, but has said it does not have the capacity to do more.

President Barack Obama and other top U.S. officials have criticized Pakistan for not doing enough to curb militants within its borders who attack U.S.-led forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

The U.S.-Pakistan relationship has been strained recently with Pakistan complaining that Washington does not provide adequate support and does not understand its security needs.

U.S. aid to Pakistan is expected to be about $3 billion this year, but Pakistan has complained that money has been slow to arrive and that requested military equipment has not been sent.

Biden will also meet with Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and Pakistan's military chief, General Ashfaq Kayani, an aide traveling with Biden said, to get more information about Pakistan's long-term strategy for the region and what help Islamabad needs.

He will reiterated the United States' support for Pakistan's government as Zardari grapples with political turmoil and internal threats.

The Obama administration is expected to offer Pakistan more military, intelligence and economic support, the Washington Post reported last week.

Zardari will be in the United States for a memorial service on January 14 for Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, the veteran U.S. diplomat who was Obama's special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

As the war in Afghanistan drags on toward the 10-year mark, violence has been at its worst since U.S.-backed Afghan forces overthrew the Taliban in late 2001 following the September 11 attacks on the United States.

Al-Qaeda operating from safe havens in tribal areas: Biden
US Vice President Joseph R. Biden said that Al-Qaeda militants have taken refuge in tribal areas of Pakistan. He said that it was in US interest to help Pakistan in these testing times.
In a joint press conference with Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, Biden said that Al-Qaeda was operating with the help of some other extremist organizations. He said that extremists were violating the sovereignty of Pakistan and defaming its image. He condemned the murder of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer. He said that US wasn’t dictating Pakistan instead it was helping Pakistan to obtain the objectives. He dispelled the expression that US had any motives against Islam. He said that peaceful Pakistan was in the benefit of world. He said that in spite of financial crunch, US gave Pakistan $7.5 billion aid and US also helped the flood-hit people.
On this occasion, PM Gilani said that he and Mr Biden discussed ways to strengthen Pak-US strategic relationship, reviewed progress in the war against terror and challenges facing Pakistan’s economy.

well Blasphemy laws are are important and its impossible to finish this law from pakistan or any of the muslim country, and its not a sign of radicalism, same like you make sex with your own family and adultery cant be finished from any of the western country,

Yes they are important and should continue as well. However there is a need to to refine the procedure of prosecution /conviction. This law has been misused like other laws. Does this merit repealing all those laws? It is also important to know that very few non Muslims have been booked on this. So considering it discrimination against non Muslims is not justified. If denial of holocaust is a punishable crime then blaspheming any of mighty prophets is much bigger crime and it should be dealt with accordingly. IMHO we need to educate people that establishment of commitment of crime and award of punishment is job of the courts instead of individuals.

Pak won’t tolerate US ‘great game’ in region
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Wednesday made it clear to the US that it will not tolerate the latter’s ‘great game’ in the region, Geo News reported.

According to the sources at Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Pakistan has made it clear to the visiting US vice president Joe Biden that Pakistan will not tolerate US ‘great game’ in the region.

Joe Biden had admitted foreign intrusion in areas located along Pak-Afghan border, sources added. Biden, however, conformed to the view that Afghan problem could not be resolved only through military force.

“No US boot will tread on Pakistani soil and there will be no violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the US vice president was quoted as saying by FO sources.

The sources also said that the US had been offered to become part Afghanistan’s reconstruction process.
