India biggest arms buyer: US report

Washington, November 5: India was the biggest arms buyer among developing nations in 2005, finalising arms transfer agreements worth USD 5.4 billion, according to a US Congressional study.

Saudi Arabia ranked second at USD 3.4 billion, followed by China with USD 2.8 billion in such agreements, the Congressional Research Service says.

According to the study on transfer of conventional arms to developing countries between 1998-2005, India signed USD 12.9 billion in arms transfer agreements between 2002-2005, up from USD 7.8 billion in the earlier 1998-2001 period (in current dollars).

"This increase reflects the continuation of a military modernisation effort by India, underway since the 1990s, and based primarily on major arms agreements with Russia," the CRS report says.

The report also pointed out that India has expanded its weapons supplier base, purchasing the Phalcon early warning defense system aircraft in 2004 from Israel for USD 1.1 billion, and a myriad of items from France in 2005, in particular six Scorpene diesel attack submarines for USD 3.5 billion.

In 2005, Russia ranked first among suppliers in arms transfer agreements to developing nations with USD 7 billion or 23.2 per cent of all such agreements, followed by France with USD 6.3 billion. The US came in at third with USD 6.2 billion in such agreements.

However, the US topped the list in actual delivery or arms during the period, valued at USD 8.1 billion, followed by Russia (USD 2.7 billion) and the United Kingdom (USD 2.4 billion).

From 2002-2005, the United States and Russia dominated the arms market in the developing nations, with the supplier duo collectively making nearly 60 per cent of all arms transfer agreements.

The total value of all arms transfer agreements with developing nations from 1998-2005 was USD 177.8 billion in current dollars. India alone accounted for 11.6 per cent of the agreements during these eight years.

In the recent period from 2002-2005, India made USD 12.9 billion in arms transfer agreements. This total constituted 14.4 per cent of all such agreements with developing nations (USD 89.8 billion in current dollars). China ranked second with USD 10.2 billion (11.4 per cent).

During 1998-2001, the top ten recipients collectively accounted for 69 per cent of all developing world arms transfer agreements. During 2002-2005, they accounted for 67.1 per cent.

Russia, the CRS maintains, has become the principal supplier of advanced conventional weaponry to China while maintaining its position as principal arms supplier to India.

Russia has also made progress in expanding its client base in Asia, receiving aircraft orders from Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

India biggest arms buyer: US report

And if you think and you are convinced that Chinese and Pakistani weapons are not of the quality then India should not be of any concern, why you are every time then start crying.

The point is not about India spending on arms. We are not going for war in the conventional ways. If Pakistan purchases more arms it would be better for us to portray it in the western media that the money which is given as aid is being used to purchased arms and ammunition. That can be a blow on the aids being received. Where as in case of India has a very less share of GDP dedicated to defense but when that share is converted to actual numbers it becomes a very big amount in comparison to other countries. Anyways we do take loans but we do not take any aid.

Simply put if we have 100 ruppes and if we spend 2 ruppes on defence where as county B which has 10 ruppes and spend 1 ruppe on defence the overall expenditure on defence is more for country B as it spent 10% of its GDP where as in case of india it is 2% but the actual amount spent was 2 ruppes by india and 1 ruppe by nation B

So it would be good for us if you ahead and get big guns. Wait we another test to fail.... See you guys have more powerful then us :yahoo:

I repeat my words, keep dreaming about your economy, we will see when the time comes.:coffee:

Sir any logics behind it. As far as i read the global economy is getting back on track. The race between the dragon and the tiger is still on. Yet to see any projection for India getting bankrupt or something like that. Can you please enlighten us.

.
Why buy when we can develop.... And When Have we cried over your weapons.... We have weapons to counter those... We are not so superior to China, but we are light years ahead of pakistan... And we consider pakistan no threat at all, the race is between china and India.... We are only worried of your weapons falling into bad hands.

If you are ahead of us and you can develop your own weapons then why your Naval Chief and other officials come crying everytime Pakistan is developing any wepaon or even when there is any rumour about that just like the one propogated by NY times and your forces official was jumped into howling :P

The race is between china, india or India, Pakistan, both are bad for the region.

And kindly tell your other countryment too who thinks India is not in race with China.

oh my God, you guys are so big liars, its a news for me that India never cried on our acqusitions, am I dreaming. Then who cried on F16s, who cried on recent development of Sea to land missile, who cried on engines we are getting from Russia...wow.

India light years ahead in what...would you care to explain.

Your LCA is under development since last 25 years and still hasnt been inducted while JF17 is in full mass production now.

Your scientist recently accepted the pokhran 2 was a failure while ours not.

Your Arjun Tank is just about to induct after russia's help and 25 years of failures..which your own army still not much interested in. Our Al khalids are has been inducted a while ago and now going through massive upgradation.

Its good your economy is growing but you are at the same time living in self denial that we will become this or we will become that but with all these failed projetcs where you gonna stand ask your tax payers.

The problem with you guys is that you take too long to complete the project or in fact fail to achieve the desired objectives of any project and then you come up with a new project...so keep dreaming, we will pray for you to spend as much as you can.:rofl::rofl:

The fuss is about Justifying your Job.....Example...If I am a defense personal...its my job to make sure that..I raise questions...on every movement in my perceived enemy territory....

Thats my bread and butter.........:bounce:

And I also have to make sure that Govt. allocates more funds to Def Research Projects...so that I continue to get my cut...from the funding to Business houses....

HAHAHA, compare JF-17 with sukhoi then, because, JF-17 is not only of pakistan... LCA is a project taken up by India alone...

Al-Khalid is not a genuine Pakistani tank. It is a modified chinese T-90II,

Pokhran 2 is still under debate, lets get on to talks when finalised... Even if its not, You guys are way tooooooo behind... lol.... Keep dreaming :smitten:

.
there is no fuss- i think its like opposition goverment - who have to keep their drums rolling - i think india is doing way better as opposition party - in house .we raise the voice and also get heard.

pakistan - is not doing its job properly as opposition party- but i am sure they would love to- ruin indian defense deals dont they.

its again comes down to same problem where pakistan lacks most.

diplomatic relation and raising the voice in diplomatic fraternity.

Yes sir all our projects have failed. We do not have anything to fight with you. You can run over India anytime

To my American Friends:
See Guys you are taxpayers. You give your money as aid and see these guys are using that money for weapons and missiles. we just have the slightest share invested in defense. The country, on the economic and the political backgrounds is unstable. At any point of time those weapons can go into wrong hands. So it is upto you to decide.

To my Pakistani friends:
We are crying. Please increase your defense budget. Dont you wanna make us cry more?

India concerned over Pakistan modifying anti-ship missiles

New Delhi, Aug 31 (IANS) India Monday expressed concern over Pakistan illegally modifying US-supplied Harpoon anti-ship missiles to hit land-based targets, saying this was 'against India's national interest'.

'This is the danger of proliferation that we have been mentioning to America that whatever you have given to Pakistan will not be used in self defence. This (modification of the Harpoon missile) has nothing to do with self defence and is against India's national interest,' said outgoing Indian Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta, who retired Monday.
