Investment & Precision Castings Limited (IPCL) , an industrial house in Bhavnagar has manufactured India’s first Multi Mode Radar (MMR) for Indian Air force’s Tejas aircraft .Till now India had to depend on Israel for the radar. But the Bhavnagar based industrial house has brought pride to the state by manufacturing the Radar locally.

Investment & Precision Castings Limited (IPCL) is a brand name in the casting industry. The company is involved in the areas of providing casting for automobile industry, astronomy and defense, general engineering, energy produce, electric switch gears, pump, valves.

The company has locally manufactured two thin-wall castings for the defense ministry of the government of India. These castings will be fitted with the Multi Mode Radar in the light weight combat aircraft ‘Tejas’. It has been tested successfully by the defense ministry, stated IPCL Managing Director Piyush Tamboli.

IPCL is the only company in India to develop the Multi Mode Radar
. As far as achievement is concerned, IPCL has been given the prestigious award of Type Approval Certificate by Centre for Military Airworthiness and certification, Chemical Research and Development Organization, Defense Ministry and the Indian Government.

To make the event memorable, a ceremony was held in Nilambaug Hotel in Bhavnagar on 1st July, 2011. The distinctive names present in this function were Noted Scientist Dr. K Tamiltani, Vice chairman and managing director of IPCL Mr. Piyush Tamboli and the type approval certificate was given by noted scientist and program director of Aeronautical Development Shri P.S Subhramaniyam.

IPCL has recently started a company called IPCL vacuum cast limited in Vartej, Bhavnagar for manufacturing Aerospace casting & medical implants and vacuum induction melting.

This is good news.

The Indian government's "self-reliance" goals for the LCA include indigenous development of the three most sophisticated — and hence most challenging — systems: the fly-by-wire (FBW) flight control system (FCS), multi-mode pulse-doppler radar, and afterburning turbofan engine.

Only thing that is left is engine to be locally made, but it has been de-linked.

They should really give the radar a name - its sounds odd calling it MMR all the time....

India has no dearth of brains. The PSUs should start recruiting the best brains, increase perks and I see no reason why we can't manufacture hi-tech stuff!

Because it's a PSU. You don't get paid as much. You aren't promoted for work but by seniority. Everything moves extremely slow. Your bosses are out of touch and incompetent. And almost no one gets fired.
Every intelligent student with capabilities to pay for fees directly or through loans goes for higher studies and wants return on investment i.e. well paid placements. PSU's cannot get the best brains. It'll always be with the private industry.

that link says the mmr has range of greater than 100km for fighter size targets, tracks 10 and engages only 2 at once...... Pretty modest if you ask me
