BGB returns snatched weapon to BSF, tension eases
Border Guards, Bangladesh (BGB) returned the service weapon of a Border Security Force (BSF) soldier after day long tensions on the border in Sonamura (in Seepahijala district). Earlier in the day, some unidentified Banglades had overpowered the BSF jawan and snatched his Incas rifle in Tarapur.
The jawan came under attack after he chased a group of cattle-lifters. Some Bangladeshis suddenly breached the border and snatched his service weapon, Sonamura sub division police officer Tapas Deb told The Hindu by phone.
BGB managed to take the weapon in their possession, but refused to return it on the plea that BSF man had entered the Bangladesh side. The incident sparked off tension and both forces deployed additional reinforcements at the Tarapur border.
Two flag meetings were held on the border and the BGB finally returned the weapon to BSF, Mr. Deb added. He stated BSF did not officially communicated to the state police on day long events.
Tarapur is one of several areas where barbed wire fencing has not be erected due to a boundary dispute between both countries and protests by the local residents demanding compensation for the loss of land. These borders are hubs for criminal activities and smuggling.
Some months back, a BGB soldier was caught at Tarapur after he breached the border. He was sent back several hours later after both countries discussed the matter via diplomatic channels.
Tripura shares an 856-kilometre boundary with Bangladesh. The border is now mostly fenced.
