Better troop transports?

Hello! I've noticed the Pak Army uses a lot of ordinary pickup trucks for troop transport. I've seen these trucks in some photos of Operation Zarb-e-Azb and (1) aren't these unsuited for front-line duty? As you can see in the photos below their very susceptible to smalls arms fire--they're very soft-skinned targets.

(2) Also would like to know are there any plans of upgrading to a better vehicle? Anyone heard of anything?

Seems like infantry mobility vehicles (IMV) would help a lot considering the unconventional war Pakistan is fighting--ambushes, IEDs, etc.
Honestly, these trucks offer no protection--you have many IMVs which you can go for... M1117 Armored Security Vehicle, RG-31 Nyala, Kamaz Typhoon, Otobar Cobra, GAZ Tigr, etc etc.

(3) Heard PA uses a lot of M113 APCs--how do they hold up against IEDs and heavy MG rounds?

These pickups might be good for fast transportation but combat really isn't their strong suit...

Well it is not that they dont have any vehicle they use this only for patrolling duties that is it ........within the cities of Pakistan as they are very quick in speed .... they wont use the sophisticated technology in cities of course ..

Oh yea. I bet those IMVs have a high fuel consumption and high maintenance. Though they would be of use in patrolling high risk areas and doing special urban operations.

There's nothing wrong with a technical if used properly... the problem arises when they're used in situations they shouldn't be in. Technicals are fast, agile and cheap. What they aren't typically is well armed or armored and thus they put their occupants at high risk.

I don't know what the average cost per pickup truck is in Pakistan, but it's probably (and this is a very safe bet) far cheaper then arming every city patrol with an IFV or APC.

AHAHAHAHAH!! *BOOM!* Now they should put a flamer thrower on that truck!

Oh yes. You can't replace hundreds of those trucks with IFVs--not possible. Though front-line troops which are at the risk of ambush and IEDs should be better protected.

@ OP, buddy we discussed this in the other thread didn't we? Must it have it's own thread? Besides as discussed before if you are talking about upgrading the troop transport capabilities of PA then that is a mammoth undertaking, we have only just rolled out the new "Digital Camo" BDU to our troops, the army is upgrading the helmets from the old M1 to PASGT variant and troops are now provided III rated body armor with Trauma Plates.

This was not the case back in 2005, furthermore our troop have the luxury of suede desert boots with vulcanized rubber soles. Pakistan Army is learning and evolving to counter the threat posed by the enemy at a rate which is remarkable. Consider if you will that given the fact that an EFP ( Platter Charge) can penetrate the up armored humvee then even if you provide our boys and girls with Otobar Cobra the threat from IEDs, especially complicated devices will still be there.

And as I mentioned before, cost is also a major issue, as is training Logistics, EME and MT chaps. Parts become an issue, back in 2005/2006 during the first lal masjid raid, Islamabad Police purchased several less than lethal pepperball riot launchers from Jaycor Tactical Systems, USA. The co2 bottles which are a very specific size got damaged during refilling and now the pepper ball launchers are rotting in the Kote.

That is only one such example, our army would have to stock thousands of spare parts for these newly inducted vehicles, because in time of war you can't exactly dial 111-Customer Service to order a replacement oil filter can you?

Well, we didn't discuses exactly this....

I know PA is doing a lot of new things but that didn't concern my question about if anyone has heard of the PA making/getting new vehicles. Everything else is irrelevant in regards to the question really.

Irrelevant? How? That is a very strange thing to say when you are mentioning army procurement. I don't Know about any Tanks or vehicles, I do know they army is looking to buy new projectors.

What I mean is I really don't care if the army is doing other things right now, or if other factors come into play in making vehicles or getting them, I don't care about those things--I just wanted to know if there is any news about the PA getting new vehicles, that's it. I've read some articles old and new and the info is quite mixed and thought if anyone else had a clearer picture.

As powerful as this is one needs to think of the wear and tear on roads when using such armored units for patrols in cities. We can not rebuild roads every year nor can we afford so many troop carriers.

Ah! Nice vehicle. Pretty sure Pakistan would have a lot of these if it weren't for the cost. If I'm not mistaken one Otokar Cobra cost $300,000 while an M113 APC cost around $40,000. Seriously though, $300,000 is a lot for a small jeep--getting 150 of them would cost $45,000,000. I could be wrong about the price tho. Bet it would go down if we make them locally.
