Benazir gave the common man a voice: Zardari
December 27, 2008
ISLAMABAD: Paying tribute to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, President Asif Ali Zardari said on Friday that she will always be remembered as a leader who gave voice to the muted turbulence of the spirits of vanquished people.
In his message on the first death anniversary of his wife, Zardari acknowledged Benazirs sacrifices, and said she gave strength to the weak and motivation to the people to strive for a goal higher than life.
It is a measure of her greatness that ordinary people who came in contact with her became extraordinary, he said.
The president said it was painful to recall the fateful day when terrorists targeted Benazir just when she vowed in her own words to bring change to the country and empower the people.
He said Benazir was fully aware of the dangers to her life, yet she decided to return home to fight for the restoration of Pakistans place in the community of democratic nations. He said Benazir believed that militancy flourishes in countries where dictatorship flourishes, giving rise to hopelessness that creates the desperation that fuells religious extremism1. President Zardari urged the democratic forces to re-dedicate themselves to fighting militancy and extremism by strengthening democratic institutions.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Sherry Rehman said Pakistan would always remember December 27 for the loss of a leader who set the direction of Pakistan's politics for over three decades.
It is going to be the year she finally fell victim to the bullet that had been following her for over three decades, the minister said in her message on Benazirs death anniversary. app
