they also do well against the emotionally charged left who get provoked easily and go down to insulting

best way to counter such smart asses is do your homework.
dont get provoked by their direct and indirect insults
have logical answers ready for the most obvious topics of disagreement
have your own set of questions ready and expose their contradictions if their purpose is NOT debate but just rant on you.
