Belarus has unveiled a new modernized version of the Soviet-made wheeled reconnaissance vehicle BRDM-2, under the name of "Caiman". According a Belarusian military magazine, the new vehicle was developed to offer a modern reconnaissance vehicle for the Belarusian Army but also for the international market.
The vehicle was showed for the first time during a visit of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko to the factory which has design and developed the new vehicle. The Company has designed the concept of the new vehicle in only four months, and in the near future a prototype of the vehicle will be tested.
The new Caiman is based on the chassis of Soviet-madeBRDM-2 but with many improvements, the original turret is removed and there is two hatches on the top of crew compartment and one door on each side of the hull. The front of the vehicle is very similar to the German Fennek, 4x4 reconnaissance vehicle, 4x4 reconnaissance vehicle. The driver is seated at the front of the vehicle with excellent vision to his front via three large bulletproof windows.
The Caiman is motorized with a new engine mounted at the rear of the vehicle and uses an independent torsion bar suspension. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 110 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 1,000 km. The vehicle is fully amphibious but the single water-jet of the original BRDM-2 is replaced by two propellers mounted on each side at the rear of the chassis.
The caiman has a total weight of 7 tons and can carries six military personnel. The roof of the vehicle can be fitted with a ring mount weapon station which can be armed with PKS 7.62mm machine gun or an AGS 30mm automatic grenade launcher. There is also three smoke grenade launcher and storage basket on each side of the vehicle.
