Beijing's life expectancy rises to 82.15 years

(Xinhua) 16:47, July 12, 2018

BEIJING, July 12 -- The average life expectancy of Beijing residents rose to 82.15 years in 2017, more than five years higher than the national average, the Beijing Daily reported Thursday.

The premature death rate for major chronic diseases of people aged between 30 to 70 was 10.8 percent in 2017, a decrease of 0.92 percent from 2016, the paper cited a health report of Beijing residents released Wednesday by the Beijing Municipal Government.

The main cause of death was chronic non-communicable diseases. Tumors, heart disease and cerebrovascular disease were the top three, accounting for 71.7 percent. In 2017, the mortality rate for Beijing residents with tumors increased to 183.8 cases per 100,000 people, accounting for 26.9 percent of total deaths, up 3.6 percent from 2016.

Huang Ruogang, deputy director of Beijing's Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said the rise of chronic diseases was attributed to an aging population, and changes in environment and people's lifestyle, such as lack of exercise, unhealthy diets and obesity.

The paper also reported progress in establishing a hierarchical medical system, saving 6.74 billion yuan (about one billion U.S. dollars) in medical expenses.

This year, the municipal government plans to promote a health assessment service in the city and provide fitness guidance for residents.

Stop drinking excessive alcohol, entirely give up smoking, and do not be a couch potato. China needs much tougher laws against smoking, among all others.

.
Congratulations to China. A major feat really. Higher life expectancy was an exclusive thing of western countries in recent past. Good to see an Asian country on that path. If I'm not wrong, Japan has the highest life expectancy in Asia ?

entirely give up smoking,
Trying to do it now. Used to smoke about 15 sticks a day. I've not smoked since 22 June 2018.

Sometimes longer life span is a curse for the elderly and his or her children.

Especially when the elderly has serious desease adn can not be cured but need spent a lot of money......

There r 2 cultural bad habits that chinese people have- smoking and gambling.

Chinese r big-time smokers n habitual gamblers not just in China but also here in singapore

I guess so. Japan, not only in Asia, but, in the entire world, has the highest life expectancy, as far as I know. That's, in my opinion, due to its culture of perfectionism and the ensuing satisfaction. Of course, perfectionism also brings about a degree of stress, which is explained by their its suicide rates.

That's great to hear. I think once a negative attitude is developed toward smoking, it is not possible to return to smoking. So, attitude is important. We need to love to hate smoking.

Like anywhere in East Asia, the father figure of the state needs to intervene in China, too, and intervene harshly. Otherwise, society will not correct the bad culture in itself.

Hard to believe. The air is pretty bad when I was there. Maybe Beijing people's lungs have evolved to handle the air.

.
The bad effect of smog on health is about 2-3 years of life, so there is potential to improve further.
In 10-15 years the problem with smog will be greatly reduced in China I believe.

.
Beijing's air is not good, but still not bad enough to have any impact on people's life expectancy, life expectancy in Beijing beats most of the developed countries.

.
Think about how high that number is if Beijing has less smog days in winter!

Easily 83-84

Less smog and less smoking. I believe, Beijing will reach Japan levels if these can be handled.

I believe war against smog/pollution is soon to be won.

But, war against smoking will take longer, as far as I experienced.

When was in a university in Mainland China, even the university shop sold cigarettes by displaying them at the most visible place. I even saw them selling cigarettes at the entrance of running track.

We need the state's iron fist to handle this problem.

I agree with that.
I personally never smoke.
But there is also multifold economic considerations.
1, huge amount of taxes;
2, Jobs related to agriculture and tobacco industry
3, Budget saving due to shorter life expectancy especially among men, less pension.

Good news is since 2015 consumption has been on the decline.

1, huge amount of taxes;
2, Jobs related to agriculture and tobacco industry

One pragmatic way to handle this question is first to increase exports through marketing and acquisitions of foreign cigarette companies and tobacco growing rights (Like what Japan exactly did with Japan Tobacco Company) and then increase automation while reducing reliance on tobacco business for employment.

I really hate people smoking in public, we have a ban on public smoking in Beijing but smokers just smoke in public places anyway, there's zero enforcement in this ban.

.
My father is reaching to 86, mother is to 81, both are still doing miles of walking every day in Beijing. I think healthy life style matters most here.

People smoking in public is the most hated thing for me . The situation is getting better in big cities from my visits but remaims little improved in smaller ones

.
What kind of evil communist dictatorship lifts poverty and improve the lives of its people to the point where life expectancy rises year on year.
