Beijing is flooded, but not the Forbidden Palace! Ingenuity of ancient chinese are unmatched

The Forbidden City has not accumulated water for 600 years, but modern drainage technology has caused water accumulation instead? official response

A few days ago, a short video on the Internet captured the picture of the Palace Museum's Compassionate Palace of Waterlogging during heavy rains, questioning the function of the Forbidden City's drainage system. Today (July 31) Beijing is still experiencing heavy rain. What is the state of the drainage system of the Forbidden City? Is there serious water accumulation in the video? How does the drainage system that the Forbidden City has used for more than 600 years work?

Di Yajing, Director of the World Heritage Monitoring Department of the Palace Museum, introduced that the drainage system of the Palace Museum is a very complicated system. First, the rain falls on the roof and is guided from the roof to the foundation. The courtyard as a whole is high in the north and low in the south, and the middle is high and the sides are low, so the water will be exported to the open ditch through the middle of the courtyard to the two sides, and then flow into the Jinshui River. Some courtyards will directly fall through the "money eye" to the underground ditch below, and then to the branch ditch outside the courtyard. The branch ditch then merges into the main ditch, and finally flows into the Jinshui River.

So, does the Forbidden City have serious water accumulation in the video? Is it the fault of modern technology?

The reporter pointed out that the Ming and Qing dynasties would open the underground ditch for dredging in March every year. At present, the Forbidden City conducts dredging three times a year in spring, summer and autumn, and the number of dredging is quite a lot. Why is there still water in the Compassionate Palace? It’s not that modern technology can’t dredge the silt, but that the staff found products in the dark ditch that only modern society can have: plastic bottles, plastic bags, towels, and even clothes. Blocked the drainage of the gutter. After dredging, the drainage is now smooth.

It is said on the Internet that the Forbidden City has not been flooded for more than 600 years. Is it true?

Di Yajing said that in historical documents, it is often found that the entire area of the Forbidden City has roof leaks, wall collapses, and some records such as courtyard water accumulation. The accumulated water in the area of the door is "several feet", but after the accumulated water is over, everyone's approach is to find the blocking point as soon as possible and clean it up, so that its drainage function can be quickly restored.
We must rethink the way modern technology works, and re-incorporate techniques of our ancient elders!

Louisiana is not part of US? other parts of US never get hit by hurricanes, typhoons and tornados?

Of course, hurricanes around the Gulf of Mexico is a common phenomenon there are a dozen or so hurricanes that make land fall in that region each year for hundreds of years. The shallow warm waters off the coast of Florida acts as a magnet and the U shaped coastline intensifies storm systems that form in the Atlantic. Same with tornadoes, these occur when warm moist air from the tropics interact with cold dry air from the north over the flat terrain in the midwest.

The cause of severe weather in the US isn’t man made.

So Beijing's once in 140 years typhoon flood was man made? what you have been smoking?

You need to put down that paperback of Xi Thoughts and stop wasting your time with YouTube white monkeys …

The floods that swept through China’s capital this week were exacerbated by urban development and insufficient drainage systems, researchers say.

“We didn’t expect that the typhoon could impact such a large, vast area,” says Junqing Tang, who focuses on urban resilience and disaster risk reduction at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School in Shenzhen, China.

But as tragic as this week’s events have been, Beijing is no stranger to flooding and disaster. Floods that have resulted in injuries and casualties have hit the capital at least seven times over the past two decades. The deadliest of these occurred in July 2012, when 190 millimetres of rain drenched the city in a day, leading to flash floods that killed 79 people.

What " researcher"? Gordon Chang? Every "reseacher" has a story to tell and you just need to choose one to believe, do you? So China's flood is always made by human mistakes and US's natural disaster, is that what you want to say, You do know your century old infra is down the drain, don't you?

Very difficult to drill logic into that thick skull of a CHINA HATING Troll.
Especially those working for the "Propaganda to Smear China", US Agency for Global Media $500 million Anti China fund.

Bad things happen in the US = reasonable.
Bad things happen in China/World = Xi Jin Ping fault.

I didn’t know Mr. Chang was with Peking University.

Must be a lot, going by you are such a prolific CHINA HATE poster on this forum.

Does it matter which universities those "researchers" are from? and do you know professors in Peking universities always argue with each other? Most professors in Peking university believe China has a better system than US, what do you say?

Did you bother to read that Nature article? Or are you incapable of understanding anything that’s not dumbed down for you in a YouTube video.

Do you bother? you dumb mind believes that once in 140 years flood was caused by infra? are you serious? do you know you US infra is like dumps comparing with China's?

I tried to lead a horse to water by posting that article from Nature.
The article explains exactly why experts think the flooding was exasperated by government actions. Read it or don’t - I couldn’t be bothered.

Which part? taken out of context? technically no cities have "sufficient" drainage system, tell me one city you think it does, can you? and Do you know US infra is like dumps comparing with China's?

Same typhoon also kills in Japan and Korea, China has a much large land area and population being affected of course
