BEIJING | China has warned the United States against selling arms to Taiwan, amid media speculation that Washington could soon act on the island's request for new weapons.

"We firmly oppose the U.S. selling arms to Taiwan," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters at a regular briefing Tuesday. She said Beijing has had "serious consultations" with Washington on the issue.

"We urge the U.S. to recognize the gravity of selling arms to Taiwan, … cancel any plans to sell arms to Taiwan and stop selling arms to Taiwan so as not to damage China-U.S. relations."

Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, despite warming ties with Beijing, has appealed to the United States for weapons, saying the island must stay on guard in light of the mainland's sharp rise in military spending.

China's military cut off relations with the Pentagon in October 2008 to protest the announcement of U.S. plans to sell $6.5 million in arms to Taiwan, including attack helicopters, missiles and missile defenses.

A Taiwanese defense official said Taipei urgently needs additional F-16 jet fighters to replacing aging F-5 fighters and to bolster its current force of F-16s. Taipei also has asked to buy U.S. Black Hawk helicopters and wants to move ahead with U.S. plans to provide diesel electric submarines.

The Obama administration is weighing the latest arms request and is expected to announce its decision on new arms sales in the next several months, according to U.S. officials.

Washington is the leading arms supplier to self-ruled Taiwan, despite switching diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979.

China and Taiwan split at the end of a civil war in 1949. Beijing still views the island as part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary.

During his visit to China in November, President Obama reiterated that the United States thinks there was only one China.

U.S. policy on arms sales to Taiwan is outlined in the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, which calls for supplying defensive arms to Taiwan.

Beijing insists that U.S. arms sales must be phased out under a U.S.-China joint statement signed in the 1980s.

The U.S. defense contractor Raytheon announced in December it had been awarded a contract worth $1.1 billion for new Patriot missile systems to Taiwan, but that the missiles themselves would be part of a separate contract.

Something is burning inside America that is making it do all the blunders one could think of. When its own economy is crunching, millions are jobless and its diluted army across the globe is begging funds, resources and supportive measures, the sick skull America is still looking to open new fronts. Perhapes it wants to do everything it wanted to be before it is killed by its own dagger.

Down with America. Don't mess with rising powers.. there ain't enough blood in you that you are looking to loose.

Why CHINA is crying...they have no confidence in fighting US weapons:bounce:

. .
We learn that from Indians, Indians always cry, and they have no gut

The communist party of china would jail you if you tried to cry against their will.
And even pay you for ranting in public forums.

My advice to china would be... try try but dont cry... over Dalai Laama or Taiwan or Xiaching or Arunachal or...

.
Indians have got no right to tell Chinese "don't Cry"

We all know who cries over arms sale well it be G-3 or Block 52 or U-214 or Small arms for Vietnam

. .
Ironically, Indians have got all "rights" that an individual deserves (including the right to express) and that is why India is not called "PRC".

You can practice these right in ur democratic India, China is not part of India :coffee:

Indians must look at themselves there is no God damn arms sale where India has not cried, they say they have right to buy anything but when it comes to other countries those "rights" suddenly disappear

Since China, US economy tied together closely, anything hurting

China means harmful to US too, thats the reason why US refuse to

sell any significant weapons to taiwan since the Bush era, and its not

going to change easily now.

BTW, did you try to cry against their will too ?:smitten::pakistan::china:

Though you probably want to compare this with some other crying we hear...still it is a very different matter and not just the typical shallow crying done by countries to outmaneuver their rivals.

China has a strong principled point because diplomatically USA recognizes one China as reiterated by Obama.
In light of this the Military sales to Taiwan are absolutely 180 degrees out of phase with the defined diplomatic relationship, especially when these weapons are being procured in light of Chinese Military growth and are to be used against Mainland China.

BTW the amount 6.5 Million USD is an error by the washingtontimes (let them know if anyone here is a subscriber).
It cannot be so low when attack helicopters and missile batteries are involved, i think it will be 6.5 Billion USD.

Mates stick to the topic and please stop India, Pakistan, China bashing ...India,Pakistan or china they have full rights to buy arms from any country no one stoping them and at the same they have full rights to oppose one and another ...India oppose Pakistan's arm deals, so that China oppose India's nuclear deal 123... It's a part of their (diplomat) jobs mates ..so stay cool and enjoy discussion

Everybody is good in giving advises to everyone else, India to Pakistan, India to China, China to India, Pakistan to India, but just keep giving advises not doing anything practical.

India cries when Pakistan get weapons, so let China cry too, why would it be solely Indian right to just do hue and cry on weapons sale to Pakistan ??? Why can't other countries do the same.

So before giving advices to others, looking into oneself also is good sometimes.

These Americans have a habit of creating tensions between neighbours by arms sales. Just imagine the Chinese or the Russian selling their arms to Canada or any other US neighbour. The hue and cry will be beyond imagination. All the more reason for Pakistan and China to join hands and look after their mutual regional interests.

.
China has no right to ask USA to stop selling arms to Taiwan.
China has no right at all to interfere in US-Taiwan deals. :rap:

You mean just like India that has no right to interfere in Pakistani arms deals, but they aren't ashamed in doing so? Give me a break, dude.
