What's new

Beholden Unto Thee ! His Imperial Majesty's 2nd Carrier [KAGA] Launched into His Imperial Fleet!

As no Chinese friend said this but i will say ,"This would be seen as aggressive behavior all over the world (china) etc etc etc etc etc etc , we will nuke you"

Also congratulation mate.

How Indian of you! :disagree:

On topic: Sleek, beautiful warship. Well done, Japan!

Correct bro, it is a gradual improvement from the Hyuga , which was based on FCS-3 , AESA. Tho while the FCS-3A is offensive platform, the OPS-50 is comprehensive, but defense-oriented. As is the case should be for Carriers. So you see how Izumo class is really different from Hyuga in the case that Hyuga class was still built on destroyer 'platform' , but Izumo class is totally more carrier, in the conservative sense.

Now we have plan for DDH-90, and DDH-91. It is not verified yet, but there are rumors that this class of carrier will be in the 60-70k tonne range. A super-carrier, in every sense of the word.

Now, bro, JMSDF's can dance with PLAN. ;) ;)

PS. Maybe future training exercise together?
Ever together in 2014 RIMPAC, Gulf of Aden will be more practicable.

U r wrong, 1st worried nation is S.Korea not China ... they lacking DF missiles & aircraft carrier like China, and no nuke.

@Atanz , I am sorry to hear this, I hope that your father's uncle who was taken captive, i pray that he was treated with decency, i know that the POW system in the war was not the best, if your grand uncle was maltreated in any way, I sincerely apologize on behalf of the Japanese people. My sincere and utter apology.

A little bit of history for you and for others. The JS Kaga (DDH-184) is named after the Imperial Japanese Navy's Carrier Kaga , which was instrumental in the strike on Pearl Harbor.

The specifics on both are uncannily similar, as well. Anyways, i took liberty to post some pictures of the old KAGA and the new KAGA. Enjoy!

The Original Kaga:

Sharp looking ship. But is it a Japanese tradition to name new ships with old war time ship name?

There is actually a continuity , yes, but in regards to actual name of current JMSDF ships there is a naming criterium. I will list the criterium:

For aircraft carriers --- names should be based on the names of Japanese prefectures or cities in the prefectures or mountains, mountain ranges
  • e.g , Hyuga , it is named after the City of Hyuga in the prefecture of Miyazaki
  • e.g, Ise , it is named after the the prefectural capital city of Ise of the prefecture of Mi-e; Note Ise was once known in olden times as the city of Uji-Yamada (宇治山田)
  • e.g, Kaga , it is named after the ancient city of Kaga in the prefecture of Ishikawa
  • e.g, Izumo , it is named after the old province of Izumo, which is now re-organized into Shimane prefecture.
  • e.g, Osumi , it is named after the old province of Osumi, which has now been re-organized into Kagoshima prefecture.
For destroyers --- they are named after mountains, or weather terms
  • e.g, Atago is named after the Atago-yama, or Mount Atago , which is located north by west of Ukyo-kyu, in the periphery of Kyoto-shi.
  • e.g, Sazanami, is named in referring to the 'ripple' of a storm
  • e.g, Akizuki, is named referring to a mountain called Akizuki-yama
For frigates --- they are named after rivers
  • e.g, Isuzu was named after the Isuzu River that circulates through Mie Prefecture
  • e.g, Mikuma was named after the Mikuma River in Oita prefecture
For submarines --- these have more colorful and ethereal names, lol, they are named after legendary auspicious animals (dragons) or for water currents
  • e.g, Soryu refers to Blue Dragon
  • e.g, Unryu refers to Cloud Dragon
  • Ha-Kuryu refers to White Dragon
  • Ken-Ryu refers to Sword Dragon
  • Zui-Ryu refers to Auspicious Dragon
  • Kokuryu refers to Black Dragon
  • Jin-Ryu refers to Benevolent Dragon

That looks like a carrier-converted battleship.

Well, to be honest, it wasn't unheard of for the Imperial Navy to convert Battleships to Carriers. In fact, some of the greatest Aircraft Carriers ever to be commanded in the Imperial Navy's Combined Fleet were actually Battleships converted into Carriers.

The IJN Akagi, for example, was a battlecruiser converted into an aircraft carrier.,

Some others include the IJN Shokaku and the IJN Zuikaku,

Thanks for the explanation my friend.

Pleasure is mine, @Pangu .

Great possibility of deployment to Middle East. If ever there will be any operations to directly strike ISIS, most probably they will play a role in troop transport , air transport, or surgical strikes.

As for ROK, they all their inventory not for Japan, but for Kim Boy. They can't do anything until they solve Pyongyang threat; which will be a long term issue for them for years to come.

Completely agree with you. South Korea will be annoyed and china not much as China has larger navy in that area.

lol, its more so directed at North Korea, not so much South Korea.

Time is changed, bro ... at least something occuring in Korean Peninsula. They don't need to solve Pyongyang threat, just need cooperation with China & Russia then situation going fine ... there will be a unified Korea and U.S.A will out, im sure N.Korea also will get changed sooner or later.

Very interesting.

On a side note; its good to see Jiang Zemin with Xi and Hu Jintao. What a continuity. I actually have high appraisal of Jiang Zemin, the old guard culture and an apprentice of the late Deng Xiaoping. Hopefully Jiang Zemin imparts his wisdom to Xi --- to be more pragmatic with East Asian neighbors. Under Jiang Zemin, bro, Japan-China relations was going through "honeymoon phase". How i wish it could go back to that again !

HA ... Jiang Zemin, i afraid now he is the 2nd most controversial CCP leader after Mao Zedong. Good side is leader of China economic boom during 1990~2000s, Bad side is boss of corruption gang insde CCP. Not that perfect, only 1/2.

Oh I have no doubt it's for peaceful purposes and only against dictatorship like NK but rival navies don't think like that who has sour past.

SK don't see it as any immediate threat but they surely would like something to counter it in their arsenal if unfortunately it relation become hostile in future.

Thanks, my friend. I can't to see the Kaga and her sister ship the Izumo in international operations in the near future. Supported, of course, with destroyer strike groups. These two carriers are the first of their kind and constructed in Japan. I can't wait till we start building larger 'full-sized' carriers in the same tonnage as the Elizabeth Class or the Ford Class. :)

Something like this:

One or two of these would complete our Navy. :)

I wanna see this baby in IOR 8-)

DDH is a good achievement for Japan, but a standard CV like in the photo is not against Japanese Constitution?
