B'desh now friendless for India-dependent foreign policy: Moudud

The Awami League do not necessarily reflect the views of Bangladeshis in general. And neither the way they are running things in Bangladesh.

As far as ULFA is concerned, you also did support the Shanti Bahini in the past. But then, that's past.

Bangladesh's foreign policy has historically been balanced for the most part.

Plz give us some evidence that we supported such a group..and tell me if we did..do u really think 'BD would have survived such an experience'? I am not saying some criminal elements in India are not involved in helping them..but to say that GOI was involved is pretty lame and just propaganda..

And ur thinking that BD supported ULFA coz india supported Shanti Bahini..even if that is true.. is pretty stupid..India is a country with huge resources and can never be matched by any of its immediate neighbors(yes ..even Pakistan too)...BD can develop itself not by confrontation but by cooperating..

That' weird, when I pulled out Bangladesh's foreign affairs page, they seem to have a lot of friends other than us.

Bangladeshi Insurgents Say India Is Supporting Them

By SANJOY HAZARIKA, Special to The New York Times
Published: June 11, 1989

For more than a decade, India has secretly provided arms and money to tribal insurgents fighting for an autonomous state in Bangladesh, rebels given sanctuary in this border area say.

A senior security official here confirmed the assistance and said an undetermined number of rebel fighters had stayed along the border near camps of Indian paramilitary forces.

''The Government is giving them help,'' the official added, without elaborating.

The rebels, who are mostly Buddhists, belong to the Chakma and other tribes in the Chittagong Hills of Bangladesh. They say they are being persecuted and pushed off their fertile land by an influx of ethnic Bengali Bangladeshis, who are overwhelmingly Muslim. Elections Are Planned

President H. M. Ershad of Bangladesh is planning to hold elections on June 25 to give some local autonomy to the Chittagong Hill Tracts, but the Shanti Bahini, the guerrilla organization fighting the Government, has called for a boycott of the vote and declared it will disrupt balloting.

A spokesman for the rebels said Indian officials began to provide arms and money in 1976, after the assassination in a military coup of Sheik Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh's first President and a friend of India.

The spokesman, Bimal Chakma, said the Indian Government had not given as many weapons as were needed. ''At the beginning we got some consideration, but it is very low compared with what we need.''

The Shanti Bahini has an estimated 500 guerrillas. Over the years, the insurgents have increased their armory by capturing weapons through raids on Bangladesh military units. The rebels in the Chittagong Hill Tracts also picked up large caches of Chinese semi-automatic weapons during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. Past Help for Pakistani Rebels

India also armed, trained and financed ethnic Bengali rebels seeking to break away from Pakistan, of which Bangladesh, then East Pakistan, was a part. The guerrilla attacks escalated into a war between India and Pakistan in 1971 after 10 million people fled military atrocities into India. Pakistani troops were routed and Bangladesh was created.

The Shanti Bahini, which means peace corps in the Bengali language, was formed in 1972 after a rejection of demands for autonomy, preferential treatment and an end to the Muslim influx. The Shanti Bahini says it has killed more than 500 members of the Bangladeshi military and the police as well as Muslim settlers.

And why would India want to do that?

Oh here's more!

The Census of 1872 was, however, very imperfect, and the actual growth of population has probably not exceeded what might be expected in a sparsely inhabited but fairly healthy tract on the time of parthion Chittagong Hill Tracts had a majority non-Muslim population of 97% (most of them Buddhists), but was given to Pakistan. The Chittagong Hill Tracts People's Association (CHTPA) petitioned the Bengal Boundary Commission that, since the CHTs were inhabited largely by non-Muslims, they should remain within India. Since they had no official representation, there was no official discussion on the matter, and many on the Indian side assumed the CHT would be awarded to India.

All this was happening during the Cold War. In fact, Bangladesh and India had been fighting a virtual covert war for almost 40 years.

I am not saying some criminal elements in India are not involved in helping them..but to say that GOI was involved is pretty lame and just propaganda..

And what makes you so confident that they are propaganda?

and tell me if we did..do u really think 'BD would have survived such an experience'?

LMAO...

You didn't know? CHT is still part of Bangladesh :cheesy: And we've survived for 40 years

And yes, the Americans along with the International Community did help us against the "Peace Corps". And if memory serves me correctly, you lot were a Cold War foe.

Did you know? The Americans (CIA) even did back Mujib's assassination. And what did you do to save your agent? Nothing...you lot were powerless to stop it. And yet even today, your stick just isn't big enough to match them.

I understand the the Indo-Pak war of 1971 really did give you guys a flush of confidence (funnily still does), but my advise is not to rule that over you.

A little about the people of CHT:
The Chakma and Hmong tribes were some of the most wealthiest and prosperous in the region. In fact, they had their own little tribes controlled by feudal lords.

During the Pakistan-era, a hydroelectric damn was to be built. And that required the people of CHT to vacate their lands and palaces for the water needed to power the system. They were promised compensation. They never got it.

And that's the source of discontent. Even now under the Awami League, this issue still goes on.

Here's a picture of their under-water palace:

Those two branch-like figures represented the entrance gates to their palace grounds.

Now, the information I stated here is not something you'd find online. Most of the online articles are propaganda (by you know who ;)). This information is what I got by speaking to both the indigenous folks and the Bengali Muslims in Rangamati.

And myself is a Chittagongian.

I do support minority rights in Bangladesh, and I do wish their sufferings are ended. But if you are to try anything funny, you are most welcome to try. But best not to whine over past butthurt claims.

If that source (an 80s article) is not enough proof for you, I frankly fail to understand what is.

we have problem with only one country :-). by the way the page was last updated in 2008!!

State of Israel

Bangladesh does not recognize Israel. It has taken a similar stance to that of its fellow Muslim nations in calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestine and for the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Bangladesh is also the only nation to have a complete ban on trade (indirect and direct) with Israel even though both are members of the WTO. As Bangladesh does not have any diplomatic relations with Israel, it is not permitted for Bangladeshis to travel to Israel using a Bangladesh passport, which brought about the arrest of journalist Salah Choudhury.

In the immediate aftermath of 2006 Lebanon War Bangladesh offered to send battalions of its infantrymen to help with the UN peacekeeping force, however Israel rejected it stating Bangladesh does not recognise Israel.[48] Although Israel rejected the country's participation, Bangladesh and Nepal were the first countries whose troops reached the shores of South Lebanon whereas Western nations such as the original leader and top contributor, France, delayed their deployment. Immediately after other UN peacekeepers arrived, Bangladeshi forces had to leave immediately, as they were considered not to be neutral in the conflict based on the fact of Bangladesh refusing to recognise Israel and a comment made by Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Morshed Khan who described Israel's retaliation as "State Terrorism".[4

BAD news for India... I tell you the reason...... Their card is on League only! They are supporting Hasina openly.... This has made Zia openly preach against India.... When she comes to power, she will have to undo all Hasinas activities by making similar strong bond with China....

make sure of it. its India who helped you in 1971 not China...

Entire Bangladesh population one way or another seen, felt and affected by indian hegemonic activities, killing and interference. More so since Awami regime acting as indian puppet. It is people expectation political leaders will lead their voice on indian activities against Bangladesh and its sovereignty. And that is political responsibility not just for BNP but for all political parties and institutions. If BNP goes against people wish and against its founding principal it will have to face wrath of people. But BNP has no record of acting on be half of indian interest.

That been said, indians are typing many things out of frustration. But they utterly failed to realize that Bangladesh is not land lock country. And border with indian from three sides is more problem for india than Bangladesh. Yes, Bangladeshis suffer from brutality of indian cattle looting force otherwise known as BSF and indian smuggling but india is in peril because of Bangladesh location virtually cutting east from western part. That is why india needs puppet regime like Awami League to get corridor access which otherwise was not given in last 40 years. Without Bangladesh corridor, India could not maintains meaningful control over north east.

And on the other side, Bangladesh even with indian border in three side managed and maintained its sovereignty and steady progress until this Awami regime came to power. Bangladesh is last bastion of indian hegemonic footprint in south asia and that is about to slipping away. Srilanka had shown india their back long time ago. Nepal is on the way to forge deeper political, economic and military relation with China. Pakistan position about india does not need any description. In Afghanistan india spent billion or committed to do so but was virtually booted out of there. Indian luck in Afghanistan is as good as Karazi's fate. And to add insult to indian injury its friend from recent past US, UK and few other issued "travel advisory" against travel to india. indian establishment not quite figured out what to do next on its dwindling position?

While indians are making cheap talk, ground is shifting under them. We just need to see how many layers of cover indians will put on to hide their failed regional power dream.

Hey dreamer.. Know what ..there are counter measures taken every where even by friends, heck even in families..so bangladesh and india are no exception..But still i think india is very very kind towards bangladesh and their hegemony in the northeast borders.. Cause imagine what bangladesh would have done to india if bangladesh had 100 crore muslim pupolation 2 trillion economy 100 + nukes 1.3 million active forces 1000 + military planes Blue water naval capabilities surrounded india by 3 sides an india with 16 million hindu population, 100-150 military planes, no missiles, ignorable nava, and army harware ??

AAh seems so good to crush the infidels aint it??
we indians can do 100 times more tan what u guys can ever dream of doing bad to india but we never did and will never(in the near future) off course u guys behave and learn to live and let live..

India recognizes Bangladesh
PM announces recognition in Parliament - Pakistan severes Diplomatic Ties.

DEC 6 : NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister, Smt Indira Gandhi told Parliament today that she was glad to inform the house that in the light of the existing situation and in resposnse to the repeated requests of the government of Bangladesh, the Government of India, after most careful consideration, had decided to grant recognition to the People's republic of Bangladesh.

She expressed her confidence that in future, the Governments and People of India and Bangladesh , will forge a relationship based on the principles of mutual respect for each others sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference in teh internal affaris, equality and mutual benefit.

She expressed her good wishes to the people of Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh government in exile has proclaimed the nation as the Gana Prajatantri Bangladesh. Bangladesh, when it comes into existance will be the eight populous nation in the world. Currently the Government in Exile is under the leadership of the Acting President Mr. Nazrul Islam.

Pakistan severes diplomatic ties:

By evening it became clear that a diplomatic riposte from Pakistan would be coming. It was announced that Pakistan had broke off diplomatic ties with India in retallaiton to the India's recognition of People's Republic of Bangladesh.

The Pakistan Government's decision was announced by an official spokesman in Islamabad.

It said that India's action in recognizing the 'so-called Bangladesh' has 'exposed' its hatred towards Pakistan and its desire to destroy it.

This is the first time that either country had taken such an extreme step in 25 years since thier emergence into freedom. Not even during the last war in 1965, when troops from both sides pitted against each other in a bloody battle, did severance of ties take place.

The announcement , which came after fiver hours after the Prime Minister, Smt Indira Gandhi announced in the parliament her government's decision to recognise bangladesh also claimed that the action was contrary to the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Bandung Principles.

Navy attacks Karachi : Pak ships sunk
Navy Missile boats rain destruction on Karachi Harbour

5 Dec 1971 : Western Sector: In one of the most dramatic operations since the war had begun, the Indian Navy blasted Pakistan's strategic and crtically prime port of Karachi, with a composite attacking force of 3 missile boats and 2 submarine chasers, inflicting absolutely awesome amounts of damage to the pakistani navy and war machine.

The attack on Karachi has produced equal amounts of shock and admiration as such an attack was not percieved given Karachi's heavy defences and proximity to two major PAF airbases.Though the pakistani side has been left in a totally wrecked state, the attacking force did not even suffer a scratch.

Operation "Trident" was executed in the afternoon of the 4th and Osa missile boats of the "Killer" squadron- Nirghat, Nipat and Veer and two petya class vessels-Kiltan and Katchall under the command of squadron commander B.B Yadav sped stealthily towards Karachi.

At around 2200 hrs yesterday, the attack was carried out with the deadly SS-N-2B Styx Anti-ship missiles. Nirghat was the first to fire in anger and draw blood as two of her Styxs exploded into and sunk the pakistani destroyer Khaibar. The missile boat Nipat engaged and crippled another destroyer and sunk a merchant vessel with her missiles. It was evaluated that the merchant ship was carrying a load of ammunition for pakistan when the rapid explosions aboard were noticed.

File photo of an OSA Class Missile boat launching a Styx missile. The Indian Navy used similar missiles last night to sink Pakistani Navy Ships.

missile boats all the way to Karachi, completely in stealth. The missile boats designed for coastal defence were never expected to be used in long range offensive operations.

Airforce lends a hand too

The Indian Air Force has also played a major role in the karachi attacks. Not only did they bring back first class reconnaissance photos brought which played a vital role in planning the attack, they unleashed a vicious attack on Karachi which was coordinated with the Indian Navy's attack.

The IAF had also launched a previous attack at around
0800 hrs on the Karachi oil installations and shore facilities. They attacked in intervals, the whole day causing more and more damage. The attacks were still on when the Trident force were approaching Karachi. Wg Cdr S K Badhwar of No.35 Canberra Squadron consisting of 8 aircraft from Jamnagar and Pune, came in from the East and attacked their designated target of Drigh road in the Karachi area at about 2200 hrs IST.

The Wing Co however, found a concentration of aluminium oil tanks to be too tempting a target and dropped his 1000 lb MC bombs on them at about 7500 feet effectively destroying them in a single run. He then maintained a westerly heading until over the sea and turned south to return to base in time for dinner.

The pakistani minesweeper Muhafiz was engaged and sunk by the missile boat Veer.

So perfectly was the operation carried out that the pakistani ships were transmitting messages of "Air attacks" which meant that they did not even know what was blasting them. Having made their presence felt, the missiles boats now targeted shore facilities. It must be noted that the Styx missiles were purely designed to kill surface vessels and using these missiles to attack shore targets was a unique innovation resorted to by the Indian Navy. (Later it was learnt that this was not the only rule broken by the attacking force to carry out and ensure the success of the operation). The missile boat Nipat pressed on an fired her missiles at Karachi which homed onto the massive Kemari oil installations. What followed was reported to be the best diwali ever witnessed.

Passing aircraft and ships

watched in awe as the once mighty Karachi was engulfed in explosive flames. All boats but the Nipat have returned safely. Nipat is believed to be on her way and she reported having some engine problems and also had to undertake evasive manouvers. Within a day after pakistan had commited the first acts of war, the Indian Navy made the enemy's worst nightmare a reality. Now, no ship can move in or out of Karachi and there are reports of pakistan retreating her warships to harbour and reducing their ammuntion outfits .

The heroes responsible for this audacious yet awesome operation are Lt Cdr B.N Kavina, Lt. Cdr I.J Sharma, Lt Cdr O.P Mehta, Cdr K.P Gopal Rao and ofcourse the squadron commander B.B Yadav who is yet to recieve his hero's welcome.

A mention must be made of the other innovation resorted to by the Indian navy in towing and refueling the short ranged

I would love to solve ground problem, not sure what it is and how India could help. We came so far without Indian help rather helping Indian economy by importing 5 billion dollar worth of merchandise through legal means and more billions in illegal means like (cows etc). Can you shed some light?
