Bangladesh, China to discuss defence cooperation

DHAKA: Increased defence cooperation would be among the topics discussed when Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping visits Bangladesh, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said on Sunday.

“China is the largest defence hardware supplier to Bangladesh. So talks on enhancement of the defence cooperation will be in the agenda,” Moni told a news conference, without giving details.

Bangladesh will soon add two new Chinese frigates to boost its naval fleet and increase its number of frigates to seven, a defence official told Reuters.

Officials say boosting naval capabilities is important for Bangladesh to maintain surveillance in its territory in the Bay Bengal, rich in natural resources and hydrocarbons.

Bangladesh briefly deployed naval ships in a disputed part of the bay after Myanmar began exploring for oil and gas there in October 2008.

Bangladesh withdrew the ships after Myanmar stopped the exploration, when China, a friend to both the neighbouring countries, expressed deep concern. China agreed to provide the frigates during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to Beijing in March, the official said asking not to identify him.

Bangladesh last added a frigate, built by South Korea, in 2001, when Hasina was also prime minister.

Xi will arrive in Dhaka on Monday on a two-day visit, on the first-leg of a four-nation tour. He will also visit Laos, New Zealand and Australia until June 24, Chinese embassy officials said.

The vice president will also discuss regional, international and bilateral issues including economic and technical cooperation, Moni said. reuters

The Chinese may be waiting for your permission before they sell frigates to BD. RAW agents are always worried about the military strength of BD. You have proved it very nicely.

No, I was just talking about the frigates. Otherwise, BD always purchases Chinese weapons at friendship price. China understands the importance of our geographical location. But, the poor and big-mouth Indians do not like to admit it. They will lose face in front of the world, if they admit that the future of NE depends upon BD.

Bangladesh and China boost co-operation

Bangladesh and China are expected to increase defence collaboration during talks held in Dhaka during 14-15 June, state news agencies in both countries reported.

The meetings, which will be led by Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed and visiting Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping, will probably focus on purchases of additional Chinese platforms.

Xinhua news agency said the meetings will build on the strategic ties that were formalised in 2005 and are aimed at increasing bilateral trade from USD4.5 billion in 2009 to USD5 billion in 2010.

Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dipu Moni was quoted by local media as saying that "China is the largest defence hardware supplier to Bangladesh ... so talks on enhancement of the defence co-operation will be in the agenda".

The talks took place a few days after the Bangladesh government announced a Fiscal Year 2010-11 (FY10-11) defence budget of USD1.5 billion, an increase of 16 per cent. The expenditure, said Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith in parliament on 10 June, will be focused on continuing the country's process of military modernisation, in which China has recently taken an active role.

In 2006 the Bangladesh Air Force ordered 12 F-7BG single-seat fighter aircraft and four FT-7BG twin-seat platforms, manufactured by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation, for about USD100 million.

In addition, the Bangladesh Navy is believed to have recently purchased two Jiangwei II (Type 053H3)-class frigates while the army has reportedly taken delivery of a range of artillery and missile systems.

Although no official details about these procurements are available, reports indicated that China sold the equipment at reduced prices and with credit from either state banks or its state-owned defence firms. Such arrangements are in place with Pakistan, Indonesia and other developing countries.

COMMENT
As is often the case with these deals, China can be expected to benefit through the acquisition of energy, particularly oil and gas. To facilitate this, in March China and Bangladesh signed a memorandum of understanding on oil and gas co-operation that will see Chinese oil companies develop energy resources in Bangladesh and potentially for Bangladesh to export to China.

BD can be important for development for N-E India, but not indespensable. India-China and India-Mayanmar relation has been improved and these can be helpful for N-E. I dont think as a partner BD can be reliable in long term. As soon Khaleda in power there we can expect a lot of hindrance, does not matter how many agreements we sign during present BD government.

Eastwatch.........you have all the right to cry about strategic importance of BD for India, but it does not lessen the strategic importance of a neighbour for BD which borders it from three sides.
