Bangladesh calls for direct shipping line to raise bilateral trade | The Nation

LAHORE - The Bangladesh High Commissioner to Pakistan Suhrab Hossain Monday called for early establishment of a direct shipping line to give fresh impetus to bilateral trade and economic relations between the two countries.

The High Commissioner was talking to LCCI President Farooq Iftikhar here at Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Vice President SAARC Chamber of Commerce Iftikhar Ali Malik, Honrary Consul General in Lahore Qazi Humayun Fareed, Executive Committee Members Mian Zahid Javaid, Nasir Saeed, Khamis Saeed Butt and Convener LCCI Standing Committee on SAARC Rehmatullah Javaid also spoke on the occasion.

The High Commissioner said that both the countries require strong commercial shipping links and a direct air link between Lahore and Dhaka to enhance bilateral trade. He said that Bangladesh needs a lot of raw material for its 5700 readymade garments factories and Pakistani businessmen should look into the area to avail the opportunity. He also urged Pakistani businessmen to take part in International Expo held in Bangladesh every year to further strengthen their liaison with their Bangladeshi counterparts. He said that both the sides can initiate Joint Ventures in various sectors of the economy.

Suhrab Hossain said that Pakistan and Bangladesh are two brotherly Islamic countries; therefore, maximum steps should be taken to strengthen relations in all fields. This calls for intensive market research, single country exhibitions on reciprocal basis, frequent visits of trade delegations, exchange of socio-cultural programmes and close contact among trade bodies of the two countries.

Speaking on the occasion, the LCCI President Farooq Iftikhar said that Pakistan and Bangladesh share a common religion, heritage, ethics and culture. He said that though trade between the two countries is growing progressively and crossed $1 billion mark but more concrete steps are needed to enhance the economic ties.

He said Pakistan can export cement, sugar, engineering goods, agriculture and transport equipments, electrical and non-electrical machinery and etc. He said that there is a need to develop close linkages among the major chambers of commerce from both sides. The regular interaction between private representatives can promote trade relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The LCCI President said that market research should be conducted regarding their range of products and priority should be given to each other for import of goods rather than buying from distant countries.

He said that the frequent shipping arrangements between the two countries could ensure uninterrupted flow of goods between Pakistan and Bangladesh. He said that single country exhibitions and frequent exchange of trade delegations always play an important role for the promotion of trade.

Farooq Iftikhar said that business community of the both countries could initiate joint ventures in the sectors of ready-made garments, agro-based projects, light engineering, sugar, cement, fertilizers, chemicals, electronics, home appliances, cotton and jute textiles. He said that Pakistan and Bangladesh could also share experiences in the fields of Small and Medium Enterprises development.

He said that incentives offered to the foreign investors in Pakistan are not only unprecedented but also make it the right place for investment, in comparison with other countries of the region.

That would be good - if Bangladesh stop politicizing the business. Anyway i am against the export of cotton/yarn - We must work hard on energy sector and textile industry in Pakistan to strengthen our economy and create employment and must export only finished goods.

Want Apology Direct shipping too???

When the present PPP will be ousted as to them apology means more or less end of that party. It is well known that it's founder Bhutto was primarily responsible for 1971 along with Yahiya. But so far by spreading falsifying story general public of Pakistan are in kept in dark about the true incident what was also the case in 1971 when public had no clue what was going on there in the east. If PPP apologize then naturally whole Pakistani population will come to know that Bhutto was the primary responsible and culprit for 1971 and will destroy the credibility of the party. This risk they wont take for now.

What does an apology cost? as an outsider if it brings benefits there is no harm in an apology. Its 40 years most of the people involved are dead already.

May be Pakistan is waiting for all the actors to die out then there will not be any pressure of prosecution if they agree to the massacre.

It sure will be good for trade and businees. In past problem was not enough trade volume. But now its more feasible because there are lots of Textile set up by Pakistani businessman. Also via SriLankan port call shipping link will make perfect business sense.

Why depend only on shipping for trade? Why not BD, Pakistan and India arrive at a consensus for direct overland trade routes from Pakistan to BD through India? But considering that this may raise security concerns, the Indian establishment may not approve of it! So it's back to square one! Expensive and circuitous sea routes around India/Sri Lanka are the only alternative presently.

We South Asians have a long, long way to go to match the trade within the EU. But if it does come about, South Asia could become the engine of growth and one of the the fastest growing regions in the world.

My two cents!
