BD bid for 2036 Olympics?

@leonblack08

Greece is not a developed country.

It only looks that way due to massive EU funds that built its infrastructure but the people have incomes more like a high middle-income country.

Also BD has scale as in 17 times the population and athletics is only a small part of the Olympic Games, albeit the most high profile.

Greece could not afford the Olympic Games but BD can in 2036.

Greece is developed compared to Bangladesh. Even if we consider 2004 Greece vs projected 2036 Bangladesh, there won't be too much of a difference.

Athletics is a major part in Olympics. Football, hockey and other field sports are not the key attraction of Olympic.

Also, you need to think about what will happen to the sporting infrastructure after an event like that. Korea had always been good in Olympic events, so it made sense for them to host it. They have history of winning medals. Bangladeshi athletes can't even qualify for events let alone participate in the main event.

All those sporting infrastructure built likely with debt will serve lesser of a purpose than just developing the necessary infrastructure of the country.

It will be a shame to host Olympics and then win zero medals in it. Our nations should first focus on our sports infrastructure and training.
Exactly. Bangladeshi athletics scene is very poor. We barely win any medal even in regional competition.

You are talking about not spending money on key infrastructure instead of ~20 billion US dollars over a whole decade

BD government in that same time period is likely to spend well over 1,000 billion US dollars on public spending.

The fact is that a country can never have enough money to spend. This small sum of money diverted to Olympic infrastructure will barely make a ripple to the vast ocean of government spending in comparison.

BD is a country of 170 million now and will be more like 200 million in 2036. Do you seriously think that such a populous country won't have enough people interested to make extensive use of all this infrastructure? You example Greece has like only 10 million by comparison.

Someone talked about nutrition? That will get better naturally as BD develops into a middle-income country by 2036 and so we are worrying about things that will rectify itself as time passes.
What we need to do on the nutrition side though is to encourage healthy eating habits and exercise but this is separate to this thread.

To reach a higher level you need to think big and boldly - a BD that holds a successful Olympics in 2036 showcasing it's world-class infrastructure with maybe the IT side of things all provided by domestic companies like Walton would be a huge advert for BD and these companies that you cannot get anywhere else.

Like I said before when ANY country holds the Olympics they win a lot more medals than going to participate in another host country. BD will be no different and so people need to stop worrying about BD being humiliated by holding the games.

There is already a thread about India maybe bidding but I think BD should also get in and try to capture the 2036 Olympics.

Like S Korea annouced its arrival into a dynamic and fast growing economy by hosting the 1988 Olympics, so BD can do the same if it won and then hosted the 2036 Olympics.

Apart from some sports facilities that would required to be built, pretty much have all the other infrastructure would be in place by 2036 anyway as part of BD's ongoing infrastructure buildup

The overall cost should run into the low 10s of billions of US dollars, which will not be a problem for a country that will have a decade from the mid-2020s to build all the infrastructure and get everything ready. A lot of the infrastructure can then be used for the people of BD for leisure and serious competition.

BD has plenty of things going for it as a stable, tolerant and the fastest growing large developing economy in the world and the Olympics can showcase its emergence as a modern country.

Perhaps asian games or commonwealth first to get experience of holding large events. All that has been done to date is sarc stuff i think. Although BD held the cricket world cup and that was done very well.

BD is also the most populous nation never to have won any olympic medals. BD needs sporting culture and grass route stuff first. Its not about money to hold it necessarily. It will come eventually with economics progress.

Dude, Mexico hosted the 1968 Olympics and they were no richer than BD when they won those games.

Why do you think that BD cannot afford it?

We are looking at maybe a max of 2% of total government spending for the decade leading up to the 2036 games.

Some people are doers while too many are naysayers.
Well I very much want to see Bangladesh to win a gold medal in the Olympics. This is not too far from reality. Shooting and archery team under world class coaches have potentials to win gold.
To host Olympics you will need to tear down the stadiums and build back with a few more to hold all the games. We barely have any open space in Dhaka for that.
You will need an Olympic village for the athletes to stay and cook meals that meets the athletes nutritional needs.

Once again all these will require foreign fund assistance. A poor country like Bangladesh can't seriously afford to borrow money from international lenders to build infrastructure that will have very little value once the games are over. I doubt any lender will give money to host the games.

You can expect @UKBengali to grow two large wings and win a flying marathon. But, do not please expect any BD winning even a Bronze medal in the Olympics.

At least, so far no one has seen any eagerness in the govt to train for the Olympics and I don’t expect any sudden enthusiasm in the country.

When it is infrastructure constructios, we rely on foreign money and expertise, and when it is FIFA, it is Argentine we shout for.

Well, this is the nature of our nation. We are no Athletes nation.

BD current youngsters are more health conscious than older generations.

A 2036 Olympics would be 11 years away from when the decision is announced in 2025 and so plenty of time for them to get ready and win medals in 2036.

@Indos - Sounds sensible to go for smaller games first but BD needs to be bold.

All forecasters predict BD to be in solid “middle-income” territory by 2036. That would be an ideal time to show the world the modern BD with world-class infrastructure. BD needs to show its modern image to the world and the Olympic Games are the best advertising for this.

People with expertise from hosting previous Olympic Games can be hired as outside experts to help BD organise the games.

Afterall, what expertise did Qatar have for any major events before hosting the World Cup recently? Nothing and shows where there is a will, there is a way.

Hosting Asian Games will be indeed huge thing for BD. Only big countries with good economy that has hosted Asian Games. This 2023 year will be China, next in 2026 will be Japan, in 2030 will be Qatar that has hosted FIFA World Cup, in 2034 it will be Saudi Arabia.

Even Malaysia and Singapore havent hosted any Asian Games until now despite both countries have excellent economy, infrastructure, and better results in Asian Games history compared to BD. The last time India hosted Asian Games is about 40 years ago

2023 Asian Games will be held in China

Provided Bangladesh has all the infrastructure needed, go for it.

This is the only thing that should matter and making sure that you can keep everyone safe.

BD is a very safe country and security at the Olympic Games would be water-tight to guarantee everyone's safety.

Looking at some of the comments so far, there is a key point that those against are missing and that is advertising.

Sometimes a country needs to do something apart from generating an immediate and tangible return. The USA did not need to send a man to the moon in 1969 and it was not to make money on the 100 billion US dollar cost of the moon mission. It did it to showcase it's will and intent to keep at the forefront of technology. That successful achievement rightly makes Americans proud to this day and demonstrated US will and technological capability to the whole world.

BD needs to be bold as a country and seriously think about putting its bid in for the 2036 Olympic Games.

There is no requirement for BD to borrow any money to build the infrastructure for the Olympic Games.

In 2022 it would be something like 4 months worth of exports and in 2036 maybe single month of exports spread over a whole decade.

Like I say all that BD would need to build in addition by 2036 would be the actual sports infrastructure as road, rail, metro, airport expansion/modernation etc is being done anyway and actually scheduled to be completed by then as well.

Olympic village can be put just outside Dhaka and that could link with the metro lines/motorways etc. in the planning works.
