BBC poll lists India among most entrepreneur-friendly nations

India along with the U.S., Canada and Australia, has been ranked among the nations with the best cultures in the world for people to start a new business, according to a new global poll.

While India finds itself bracketed with the better ranked countries, Colombia, Egypt, Turkey, Italy and Russia are the least friendly to innovation and entrepreneurship, showed results of the 24-country BBC World Service poll.

The world’s two major economies — U.S. and China — are also among the most favourable countries for innovation and creativity, according to the results.

In both nations, 75 per cent say that their country values innovation and creativity — second only to Indonesia (85 per cent), and well ahead of other emerging economies such as Brazil (54 per cent) and India (67 per cent).

At the other end of the scale, only 24 per cent of Turks and 26 per cent of Russians and Egyptians say they feel that innovation and creativity is valued in their country.

The results are drawn from a survey of 24,537 people across 24 countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Spain, Turkey, the U.K. and the U.S., among others.

Most countries surveyed in Asia were found to have a well-developed entrepreneurship culture, and except Pakistan, all had good ratings on the entrepreneur-friendly index.

Indonesia scored the highest ratings of all participating countries in the survey (2.81), just ahead of the U.S.

Index derived from the mean scores (on a scale from 1 to 4) of four questions:
  • valuation of creativity/innovation in own country
  • difficulty to start own business in country
  • valuation of people who start own business
  • ease of putting ideas into practice

Indonesia fares much better than glorious India..now thats a shocker...because they are not running around forums bragging about it.
And Turkey is in bottom five..another shocker..i thought Turkey owing to its central location and large talent pool was a magnet of european forgien investment.

Anyway BBC polls have a tendency of bias so take it with a salt of grain.

Did you not see that Indonesia is better than US and Canada as well? Talk about tunneled vision.

Here's something to chew on for you,

Most countries surveyed in Asia have a well-developed entrepreneurship culture. Except Pakistan, all have good ratings on the entrepreneur-friendly index. Indonesia scores the highest rating of all participating countries in the survey (2.81), just ahead of the USA. India and Australia rank fourth (2.73) and fifth (2.72), while China and the Philippines also rate relatively high (2.66 and 2.62 respectively). Only Pakistan is trailing, rating only 2.35 on the index and below the global average (2.49).

There is more optimism around the perception of how innovation and creativity are valued in Asian countries. Except in Pakistan, publics’ mind-sets are very positive, with majorities above the global average (55%) saying that initiatives in these areas are highly valued.

Pakistanis are consistent with their weak entrepreneurship culture as less than three in ten (29%) say they have had ideas to start a business. Regarding inspiration for community initiatives, Chinese are also the most likely to say

Still they are Malaysian citizens and the PRC can claim no credit for their achievements. Let's be happy that China is starting to break the lack of creativity stereotype (much like the Japanese started to in the 80's and Korea started to in the 90's)

Indonesia is not a shocker... they have paid attention to education. See graph below:
