Good grief! The BBC news article is talking about the Report I quoted from!

Am not satisfying anyone's ego. If anything I posted quite humbling figures for India. The scope of the discussion is not as narrow as you want it to be.

I do not get your logic here, are you really saying that China is responsible for bailing out US as well as in the process of Bailing out European community..........

China is the second largest economy for reasons but we are not being hindered by huge national debt the way America and some EU countries are. I wonder why America needed China's money to balance its own cheque book and begs the question why the EU is begging China for financial packages to help bail out countries within the EU, when they could have asked their number one ally and economy America. Do a few key word searches and follow the news more for a clearer picture of what todays world really looks like.

The British study is meant to prod the UK government to increase funding for education and R&D.

This whole debate is silly. We people in south Asia (India, Pakistan) are braggarts: we will do one thing and brag to ten people. East Asian culture (China, Japan, Korea) is more humble; they believe in doing the hard work even if nobody is clapping for them.

China has definitely improved a lot in the research field, and the quality will go up gradually.

But at the end of the day, its all about money. In next 10-15 years India will start churning out a lot of papers too, after which we ll have to focus on Quality. I just came across this paper. Some of the figures are quite humbling.

You don't get the results of investing in R&D straightaway. From the report,

They will in numbers, but in quality it might take some time, but they ll get there gradually.

As already said THERE is a huge difference between the number of publications and the quality of it.

When i worked in a lab, in Europe, there was :
Nature which is for recognition work. nature doesn't mean 100% quality of the work but more the recognition of the lab/scientists on their recognized work.
PRL was what we were all dreaming to have an article on it . we were always hoping successful work so we can get it.
Then you have the level just below.
And many many low level publications: everyone can publish in it. even i remember in another labs some people were doing same experiments that so many did but with very small difference ... like that they multiply the number of publications than they can get some money from the state.
everyone working in these labs know this.

what i mean is this is nothing to do with number of publications: the level of science in a country.

USA Japan and Europe will keep the best for a long time.
As it was showed with number of publications in Nature.

But Investing so much in science is a good step ! the next very important step is to make the best scientists come in China !
and give them everything to make them able to have better possibility for research than in USA.
but i guess it will take long time for this.
