Banshkhali shooting: Eminent citizens urge China to bring its companies to book

Dr Asif Nazrul, Anu Muhammad, Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, Sultana Kamal, Khusi Kabir, Meghna Guhathakurta, CR Abrar, Azfar Hossain, Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, Zonayed Saki, among others, signed the letter.

They raised their concerns over the killings since the initiation of the project -- once in 2016 when five locals were killed in police firing and the recent one on April 17 when seven workers of the power plant died the same way.

Thought i saw someone criticizing S Alam Group for being a BAL lackey or something, why sudden 90 degree turn to defend the same guy?

So total 12 people died in two incidents. If i can remember correctly those five locals killed in 2016, protested about the coal power plant. The seven workers died for protesting about wage and time for prayer and iftar. Workers from Padma bridge and Payra power plant also complained and protested about wage and prayer before (previously discussed).

Talking about this and asking China to take action against this makes them Indian dalal and Hindu? I guess that makes HC a Indian dalal too. So what's next? Will people automatically become some country's agent if they talk about Rampal, RNPP or any coal power plant? Was Anu Muhammad a good Chinese agent when he protested about Rampal?

And who gave the fatwa that wearing red or any bindi/bindu/tip makes a women Hindu? Before educating/mentoring youngsters of house-stuff, some people should do something about their sick mentality.

Living in a far more civilized country than BD can't cure that "Chotoloki" sometimes. After all "ঢেকি স্বর্গে গেলেও ধান ভাঙ্গে।" People died and this mentally challenged PoS is busy labeling people as Hindu-Indian dalal.

Yes, our "Susil" society is controversial but at least they are vocal about those dead people, OUR people. If this makes them Hindu and Indian agent then i can say some idiot spouting nonsense here is a lap-dog of it's Oriental master. May Allah help those pathetic people first. Even if they have controversy, Bangladeshi "Susil" society has more contributions than PDF Bangladeshi "Susil" society who can "safely" mouth-fart here only, other than actually doing anything.

why should someone speak hindi in BD?

If you mean holding a whole conversation in Hindi, then nobody in BD does that. Why would people speak Hindi while they are fluent in Bengali? Ignore the mentally ill propaganda paddler who himself proudly speaks Urdu here which we opposed in our language movement in 1952. So no point in taking words of a hypocrite seriously unless he can come up with any stat.

Just look at tiny country like South Korea which has such an amazing entertainment industry from K-Pop to K-dramas. I wish BD would avoid falling to bollywood trash trap.

I don't think nowadays Bangladeshis watch Bollywood movies like they used to before because of quality, promotion and new generation of actors. People don't watch Bollywood movies or listen songs unless it they make any hype just like Bangla or any other foreign movies.

I think people watch/like Hindi dubbed South Indian films more than Bollywood movies nowadays instead. And mostly poor and middle class women watch Indian serial because the language is understandable and the our local contents and channels suck most of the time. But now instead of Hindi serial Bangladeshi women mostly watch Indian-Bengali serial. Educated women switched to other content instead of Hindi serial. Actually i doubt anyone watches Hindi serial anymore.

Korean culture had a base in Bangladesh long before K-pop or Korean movies-dramas became popular around the world. If i remember correctly, BTV used to telecast a Korean program. Don't know if they do that anymore or not but in recent years Korean culture gained more popularity among Bangladeshis. Lots of Bangladeshis including me watch Korean movie and drama. There are lots of Korean contents in a Bangladeshi online streaming service.

There are also a fan base of K-pop in Bangladesh. Heard they are sometimes quite aggressive towards people who mock them. For few years now they are even competing in Korean cultural competitions in BD and Korea. They are even supported by Korean embassy. Never saw something like that for anything Indian.

Average Chinese, Japanese, and Korean speaks no English at all, they seem to be doing just fine.
We need to invest in Research Universities.
Yes, the East Asians are weak in English but we are competing with each other to forget it. Eastern Asians want to learn English but their brain system is stuck in learning a huge number (at least 2,000 characters) of Kanjis/Chinese characters.

In the case of South Asian countries, we already know English. So, it is wiser not to forget what we have already learned. Learning English only helps us to integrate with others and helps us to learn knowledge, technology, and medicine from other developed societies.

Indians excel because they have this tradition of learning good English.

@bluesky bhai I agree but would still say that a minimal percentage (I'd say less than ten percent) of Indians know how to properly spell and write/speak using grammatically correct English. This is their educational legacy from British times, which we rejected, being Muslims.

Which is actually quite a few percentages more than that of ours in Bangladesh.

We have to catch up in Bangladesh, that is for sure.

Bangladeshis bal sals can buy ten taka net pack to put cringey status on Facebook but can't use that net pack to learn proper English ?

I'm asking too much actually, they can't even bother to speak proper Bangla, too busy speaking street trash language, with words like khaisi.. taken striaght from Noakhailla..

Well money and social skills are more important than professional language skills in Bangladesh.

If Daddy or Mama/Chacha gave you your money-minting opportunity (jobs at customs. taxes or any corrupt organization) then why try so hard to learn English?

Only skill needed is that of how to take money under the table.
Who listens to K-pop crap ?

Oh you will be surprised...too many pre-teen and teen age people these days in Bangladesh.

Deshta Ucchonney Galo!

The Muslims of Bengal started going to secular schools sometime around the 1930s and the percentage remained too low compared to our neighboring Hindus even during the partition in 1947. Properly educated people, who knew English, were few and far between even in 1947.

Pre-1930 Muslims used to attend Maktabs and Madrassah. Things changed quite a bit after 1947. Parents sent their children to secular schools where English was not the medium of instruction but was a Subject with reading, writing, studying the grammars and compositions of essays.

Things started to deteriorate after the 1971 war. Watching evil doing by the Muslims many people lost faith in Islam and became outwardly secular. The Mullahs came out in mass to reverse the situation and now many of our children attend religious schools instead of British or Pakistan time secular schools.

This is how most of our people have come down to a level where they do not learn subjects other than theology and cannot properly read or write English. Yes, to us, as you said, English is the language of Nasara Christians.

I heard from my elders that past 1971, Govt. made Bangla official language (Chetona feeling) and banned English completely in official govt. communication. English Medium schools (primary, secondary) were completely discouraged and remained the domain of a few kids from well-off families. So Awami League and their policies at that time (1972 to mid 1980's) were also attributable to this problem.

Yes, it is true that the GoB discouraged English and put importance on Bangla after 1971 with the patronage of Sk. Mujib. My uncle was very angry at that because he had a typing learning school.

He used to openly criticize Mujib by telling people Mujib copy-pasted in the exams without learning anything. Now, he is destroying the most widely circulated language. He was unhappy than others because the Mujib policy caused him financial problems.

Now, the GoB is trying to reverse the situation but people have become more oriented towards theology-based learnings. To them, Bengali and English both are Haram. But, the thing is they remain stuck in the 1450- year-old superstitious mindset.
