The visiting deputy assistant secretary of the United States (US) for energy transformation Dr Robert Ichord said Saturday that the Bank of America is willing to provide US$ 50 billion to support sustainable and renewable energy sector in Bangladesh.

"Bank of America is willing to provide $ 50 billion to support this sustainable and renewable energy sector," he said at a discussion meeting on "Sustainable Energy for All Initiative (SE4ALL)" with the board of directors of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) at the auditorium of the trade body on the day.

He suggested that Bangladesh should give more concentration on gas exploration. He also stressed the need for modernised policy framework under public-private partnership (PPP) model in order to ensure better enabling environment for investment in this sector.

"In order to ensure energy security for all by the year 2030, government, private sector and donors have to work together," he said.

Welcoming the US official delegation DCCI President Md Sabur Khan said Bangladesh has immense demand for alternative energy and the companies from the US could invest in the sector for mutual benefit.

"Alternative power has a great demand in Bangladesh and there remains a tremendous growth potential for it in this sector," he said.

"I invite companies from US to invest in this sector," he added.

Mr Khan said SE4ALL could play a vital role in mobilising foreign investment in this sector in Bangladesh.

He said Bangladesh government has initiated a power and energy sector development roadmap (2010-2021) which has targeted to produce 20,000 megawatt (mw) of power by 2021.

He requested the US entrepreneurs to invest in power and energy sector including alternative energy like renewable energy in Bangladesh to ensure energy security in the country which is very important for the economic development and industrialisation.

He informed that about 16 per cent of global energy consumption now comes from renewable resources and demand for renewable energy is increasing in Bangladesh in recent days.

The SE4ALL is a joint World Bank-UN initiative with three broad objectives like increasing energy access, promoting renewables and improving energy efficiency.

DCCI Senior Vice President Nessar Maksud Khan offered vote of thanks.

DCCI Vice President Absar Karim Chowdhury, Directors ASM Mohiuddin Monem, Khairul Majid Mahmud, Haider Ahmed Khan, FCA, Rizwan-ur Rahman, M Abu Hurairah, Kh Shahidul Islam, Hossain A Sikder, Abdus Salam and Md Shoaib Choudhury, among others, took part in discussion.

Ms Molly Ward of State Department Energy Bureau (State/ENR), USA, Ms Elizabeth Wallace, Financing Consultant for State/ENR, USA, Pat Delaquil, SE4ALL Consultant for State/ENR, Francesca Costantino of US Department of Energy, Alexander Gazis of Economic & Commercial Office, US Embassy, Dhaka, among others, were also present.

More energy source will help Bangladesh to industrialize more and to add more export revenue into the economy. Yes it is right that economy fully dependent on loan is not good but investing in power and infrastructure sector is beneficial for every country.

They are asking for investing in energy sector which will return in big way if we can utilize that for industrialization and add more export revenue. Even rental power plant which is consuming 3.1 billion usd each year still helping us to increase export by 6.5 billion usd. We are getting a net profit here. There is no alternative of rapid expansion of power production in Bangladesh if we need to increase our GDP growth to 2 digit number. Yes unnecessary spending with loan money should be avoided and more detail cost benefit analysis should be done to make sure it will generate sufficient profit/revenue for Bangladesh.

ঢাকা: যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের এনার্জি ট্রান্সফরমেশন বিষয়ক উপ-সহকারী সেক্রেটারি ড. রবার্ট ইকর্ড বলেছেন, ‘যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বিনিয়োগকারীরা বাংলাদেশে জ্বালানি খাতে বিনিয়োগ করতে অত্যন্ত আগ্রহী। জ্বালানি খাতে বিনিয়োগের জন্য “ব্যাংক অফ আমেরিকা” ৫০ বিলিয়ন ডলারের একটি ফান্ড গঠনের সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণ করেছে । এই ব্যাংকটি বাংলাদেশে টেকসই ও নবায়নযোগ্য জ্বালানি খাতে আরও বিনিয়োগ করতে অত্যন্ত আগ্রহী।

শনিবার ঢাকা চেম্বার অব কমার্স অ্যান্ড ইন্ডাস্ট্রি (ডিসিসিআ&#2439 ভবনে। ডিসিসিআই এবং বাংলাদেশ সফররত যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রতিনিধিদলের মধ্যে জ্বালানি বিষয়ক সভায় তিনি এসব কথা বলেন। ড. রবার্ট ইকর্ড যুক্তরাষ্ট্র প্রতিনিধিদলের নেতৃত্ব দেন।

ড. রবার্ট ইকর্ড পাবলিক-প্রাইভেট-পার্টনারশিপ (পিপিপ&#2495-এর আওতায় বাংলাদেশ সরকারের বিদ্যমান পলিসি ফ্রেমওয়ার্ক যুগোপযোগী করা এবং বিনিয়োগের সহায়ক পরিবেশ তৈরির প্রস্তাব করেন।

তিনি বলেন, ২০৩০ সালের মধ্যে সকলের জন্য জ্বালানি সুবিধা নিশ্চিত করতে সরকার, বেসরকারি খাত এবং দাতা সংস্থাগুলোর একসাথে কাজ করতে হবে।

অনুষ্ঠানে ডিসিসিআই সভাপতি সবুর খান বলেন, বাংলাদেশে বিকল্প জ্বালানির প্রচুর চাহিদা রয়েছে, তাই এ খাতে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ব্যবসায়ীদের বিনিয়োগ করতে পারেন। বাংলাদেশে জ্বালানি খাতে বিদেশি বিনিয়োগকারীদের বিনিয়োগ নিশ্চিত করার জন্য “সাসটেইন্যাবল এনার্জি ফর অল ইনিশিয়েটিভ” গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করতে পারে।

ডিসিসিআই সভাপতি বলেন, বাংলাদেশ সরকার গৃহীত ২০২১ সালের ২০হাজার মেগাওয়াট বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদনের জন্য দীর্ঘমেয়াদী প্রকল্প গ্রহণ করেছে । সরকারের এ রূপকল্প বাস্তবায়ন করার জন্য এ খাতে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বিনিয়োগের আহবান জানাই।

তিনি আরও বলেন, বাংলাদেশের অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়ন ও শিল্পায়নের ধারা কে বেগবান করতে জ্বালানি সুবিধা নিশ্চিত করার বিষয়টি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করবে। সারা বিশ্বে ব্যবহৃত মোট জ্বালানির ১৬% আসে নবায়নযোগ্য জ্বালানি খাত থেকে এবং বাংলাদেশেও নবায়নযোগ্য জ্বালানির চাহিদা দিন দিন বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে।

প্রসঙ্গত, “সাসটেইন্যাবল এনার্জি ফর অল ইনিশিয়েটিভ” হলো বিশ্বব্যাংক এবং জাতিসংঘের যৌথ উদ্যোগে গঠিত একটি সংস্থা, যার মূল উদ্দেশ্য হলো- জ্বালানি সুবিধা বৃদ্ধি করা, নবায়নযোগ্য জ্বালানির প্রসার এবং জ্বালানি বিষয়ক দক্ষতা বৃদ্ধি করা।

@captain planet, I think the title of this thread is misleading. USA only proposed to invst $50b in the energy sector. The US Deputy Asstt. Secretary did not say about 'Renewable' energy. He said only about energy sector. Only BD side was talkingabout renewable energy all the time. I think the Moderator may be requested to make corrections in the title of the thread.

I posted as it is written in the news article. Yes this could be in the energy sector but this has been proposed at the meeting on 'Sustainable Energy for All Initiative' thats why it might have been reported for renewable energy.
