No it has nothing do with that. This descision was made in the early 70's. Countries with population greater that 65m i think with low income could self select how to be categorised. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh were all low income countries. India and Pakistan self selected not to be categorised as low income country whilst Bangladesh did not. Subsequently these categorisation was mapped to development based categorisation and LIC became LDC. India and pakistan became part of the developing group. That is the actual history.

India and pakistan were not in a better place than BD at any time.

True, some poor African countries even below 75 million people did not join LDC grouping because they perceived themselves as 'prominant African countries' or 'African leaders'. They thought it would be incompatible with their dignity. Kenya, Ghana, Cote D'Ivoire, Nigeria despite being equally poor in socio-economic parameters like their LDC neighbors, choose not to be included in this grouping. Same things happen with India and Pakistan also. India perceived itself as the leader of third world country, a big and influential nation in the world while Pakistan also seen itself as a leading Muslim nation, a regional power and player. So, despite their socio-economic condition hardly better than Bangladesh, choose not to be included in LDC. While Bangladesh have no such self-image. So it had no qualm of joining that undignified group to get some international trade and loan benefit.

I think, even if India wanted, UN would not have included it in LDC because of it's massive size, geo-political weight etc. This is similar to China, despite average Chinese being one of the poorest people in the world in 1960s and 1970s, China was considered a great power by the western world and a counter-weight of USSR in Asia. China was never categorized as a third world or poor nation because of it's sheer size, geo-political weight etc. although average Chinese in that times was no richer than a citizen of LDC Bangladesh.
