Intake of eggs and chickens has jumped significantly over the last six years

Bangladesh's per capita protein consumption especially chicken and egg has increased significantly as the local poultry industry plays a vital role in this regard, experts said Saturday.

Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) in its latest Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2016 report said daily per capita consumption of major meat like chicken, duck and beef as well as fish and egg has increased compared to that in 2010.

Among those protein items, intake of eggs and chickens has jumped significantly over the last six years, the HIES 2016 data showed.

According to the statistics, egg consumption by a person has increased to 13.58 grams daily in 2016 from only 7.20 grams in 2010.

Daily egg consumption per capita was only 5.27gm in 2000 and 5.15gm in 2005, BBS statistics showed.
Similarly, chicken and duck consumption has picked up to 17.33gm per day in 2016 compared to 11.22gm in 2010.

In 2000, per capita chicken and duck intake was 4.50gm which increased to 6.85gm daily in 2005, the HIES data showed.

Experts said the contribution of Bangladesh's poultry industry was significant as businessmen supply huge chickens and eggs in the market at affordable prices over the years.

Director General of Department of Livestock Services Dr Md Ainul Haque told the FE that the country's growing poultry industry was playing a vital role in supplying animal protein across the country at affordable prices.

Some 60-65 thousand poultry farms across the country are producing chickens and eggs every day, he added.

The industry started flourishing since late 80s which now becomes a driver to supply a significant amount of animal protein for the human body, Dr Haque said.

Bangladesh Poultry Industry Coordination Council (BPICC) said they have invested more than Tk 300 billion in the sector while it was only Tk 15 billion in 1980s.

For the first time in 1935, poultry birds were imported. In 1947, only six commercial poultry farms started operation in the country.

Once the tiny poultry sector had attained the "agri-based industry" title in 1994, Bangladesh's poultry industry has been growing significantly.

BPICC president Moshiur Rahman said the production in the country's poultry industry had been boosting every year, making animal protein available in the market.

Dr Munzur Murshid Khan, Secretary General of Bangladesh Poultry Industries Association (BPIA), told the FE that the prices of chickens and eggs remained almost stable over last 5-6 years, resulting in higher consumption by the people.

"The prices of eggs and chickens are still very low compared to any other animal protein in Bangladesh. Besides, public awareness has increased a lot. Both the factors have contributed to boosting egg and chicken consumption over the years," he said.

Besides, the HIES 2016 data showed that per capita daily beef consumption increased to 7.54gm in 2016 from 6.84gm in 2010 while fish consumption to 62.58gm in 2016 from 49.50gm in 2010.

However, per capita mutton consumption decreased a little bit to 0.55gm daily in 2016 from 0.59gm six years ago in 2010.

@Nilgiri, do you really believe this BBS made up story that the poor BD people are progressively consuming more protein?

Werent you ppl eating lot of fish already? how much difference would chicken & egg make?

. . .
Our per capita fish consumption is 20 kg/year and meat of all variety is another 10 kg/year(calculated from this report). So our total meat consumption is 30 kg/year.Not that bad for a lower middle income country. In the developed countries, total meat consumption is about 100 kg/year average.

Assuming roughly 25% of protein in animal and fish, that makes it 20 grams of protein per person daily.

I would say that the average person in BD needs 40-50 grams of protein for a healthy diet and so 40-50% of protein intake from fish and meat is good. Rest of protein comes from rice, lentils and milk.

North Korea "seems" to well above Sri Lanka going by its claims on child wasting and stunting "on paper".

Credibility of such paper is a whole different matter.

UN has stated unequivocally that:

BBS has limited capacity to produce many of these statistics in accordance with relevant international standards and good practices

https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/repository-for-bd-statistics-bbs-quality-credibility.525379/

North Korea for another example reports child wasting at 4%, 5 times lower than that of Sri Lanka. Should we believe that prima facie too?

When you are a hermit and/or have huge propaganda buffer space like BAL/BBS have, inevitably your credibility sinks to the gutter.

It is another reason for why Bangladesh scores where it does on the Corruption Perception Index, Freedom Index (esp on institutions) and why there is huge dissonance when a 3rd party does any analysis independent of BBS data (like say the Economist did in the liveability index).

WHO also nearly always puts asterisk next to BBS survey data regarding mortality and child health and politely uses euphemism "pending re-analysis". When you look at which other countries get tagged like this, a trend is noticeable. They all have crap insitutions and terrible credibility and atrocious corruption.

Talking about meat - that's all an American Midwesterner will eat in an evening (see below). These are big-boned, burly people (200 lbs plus on average) so they easily eat more than a 16 oz. sized steak in an evening. 2 of these meals equals one KG of protein. Add your of 3-egg omelet breakfasts and half-pound hamburger lunches and the protein intake adds up pretty fast...

No offense to my vegetarian friends - here's a picture of a typical T-bone I enjoy at the local steak place Houston's once a month on average - I can eat maybe a half of it in a single sitting. No rice here .... :-)

BD seems to be above India in all the nutrition and food related indexes.

How dare you say this. Himmat kaysey aya tumsey :-)

Watch all the Bhakts scurry out like cockroaches out of the woodwork denouncing this as BBS B.S.

India's Modi administration is by far the largest fudger of their own statistics. No one can out-do them in pure unaldulterated Gobar  B.S.

Lived my entire life like a "Bedouin", to old and tired now,of shoveling snow from the driveway, deicing the car windshields every morning, vacuuming the entire house, Gardening,my favourite passion, I used to hate ironing clothes, cooking, plumbing, routine minor electrical chores, servicing and washing of my private car every weekend, etc, etc.

The worst was Globe trotting, packing the entire household routinely after 3-4 years and unpacking them from the Containers and re setting them in a new country.
Enjoy your youthful days while you can. Salam.:-):-):-):-):-)
