What's new

Bangladesh's per capita income rises to $2,227

Why do you say India has only a 24-year lead over BD when India has more than a 100-year lead? India's development was initiated during the British time.

BD's development also started after 1947 when this country had only one factory, Mohini Mills in Kushtia. And virtually there were no bridges, except Hardinge Bridge, or Pakka roads in 1947. Most of what we see today was built before 1971.

1947 and 1971 should not be cited as the yardstick for development. These two years are related to the politics of the region and not to the economic development.
What are you referring to here? Industries or Infrastructure?

It takes very long years to build both industries and/ or infrastructures, It may take more than two centuries to do so even if a country starts this job by their own people. please read the development history of all the developed countries of today.

I know, you guys will pinpoint at China. Yesterday it was poor and today it is moderately rich. So, it takes only a few years. But, you have to go deep into the past activities in China, South Korea, and any other country.

Simply speaking, Rome was not built in one day whatever Hasina Bibi says development by 2041. She did not read the first paragraph of a book on the national development of any country.

Umm the Chinese were very strategic about their growth. The had a vision , made a plan and carried out that plan to the T. They were able to do this because there is well established political order in China. So their politicians were able to solely focus on development

In BD Awami leagues feet is shaky. Their main focus is gaining and maintain control over the country. Whatever development they do is to achieve the aim mentioned above.

I am not taking credit away. Giving credit where credit is due . But unless BD politicians focus 100% on development not only in words but also in action, its very difficult to achieve the goal of 2041.

Now the kid wheels are coming off after graduation from LDC. Unless politicians get their act together, the fall will be quicker than the rise .

This decade is make or break for BD as a nation. Win this decade and BD as a state will last the next 100 years. Lose and well...

Quite funny bragging of 2000+ average income while begging to stay in LDC countries list for benefits. Either one of them can be true. Would be good to see BD compete in the real world without concessions.

I think we are better than that, we must not instigate, only reply when they ask for it..

That's how were better than them.

Thanks you.
Even the most unruly have wised up 😏
Are we still earning more than the average indian?

Nothing wrong with exploiting benefits. Turkey is classified as a developed country but they want to downgrade to developing status for benefits.

Any smart statesman will reap all possible benefits from all possible sectors by any means necessary. Pride does not dictate economic and national policies. Otherwise why would our space faring neighbor swallow its pride to accept help during covid?

Wait Turkey is a developed country ? I thought certain parts of Turkey isn’t even that good lol.
Yes, you are right to say industrialization takes a very very long time. In all countries, industrialization has preceded economic development. It is because industries produce employment and national wealth.

However, our people here think a few bright buildings in a city is the yardstick for development. They usually send these photographs to hoodwink others that Bd is fast developing. I wonder why do they think so when even a simple infrastructure like supplying clean water to its citizens has not been built or renovated.

Idk but yeah I agree , tall buildings don’t equal to development but industrialization and self sufficiency does

As I said before, Rome was not built in a day and you should not think China developed only within a few years. National development is a continuous process. Read below to know Chinese infrastructure development started in the late 19th century. Off-again and on-again but as usual it has been a continuous process that finally resulted in what China is today.

Please read the citation from the Wiki below, and also do not forget how MaoTse Tung forced your people to get rid of the Opium social disease. All these things resulted in the next phases of development: Note that China reformed the land ownership under the communist system and it also received quite a volume of Japanese FDI one time, Everything contributed to Chinese progress.

Wiki says:

"The revisionists (mainly economists like Thomas Rawski, Loren Brandt and others) view the traditional economy as mostly successful with slow but steady growth in GDP per capita after the late 19th century. These scholars focus on the continuity of between features of the traditional economy and the PRC economy with its rapid growth".

"They believe that the PRC built upon the favorable conditions that existed during the Republican and late Qing periods, which allowed for the fast economic growth of the period".

Do not forget that China also had the advantage of Hong Kong, who provided financial expertise, and Taiwan with manufacturing and so in some ways it is not surprising that it managed almost 10% GDP growth average between 1980-2020.

BD started from a much lower base in 1971 than China did in 1978, when Deng came into power and started his reforms. Mao had already made the necessary changes to allow China to take off rapidly from 1980.
