Bangladesh’s Nuclear Power Plant: Economic Blackhole or Energy Backbone?

For the first time ever - I am worried about the balance of payments situation.

We cannot have remittances continuously plugging such massive holes!

Actually remittances play a larger part per dollar in the BD economy than exports do.

Reason is that exports consume a lot of input material which needs to be imported, but nearly all the remittance money purchases goods and services produced in BD.

BD does need to one day balance it's imports and exports but the time is not now as it needs to import a lot of capital machinery and does not yet have a sufficient high-value export basket.

Worrying about it now and government reducing import of capital machinery will mean that BD economy cannot develop further.

.
Go ahead and tell government to start up coal fired locomotives from the 19th century. After all they are probably cheaper than electric high speed trains.
Unfortunately since millions of meritorious men like you are born in Bangladesh, therefore, that country is unable to manufacture even a steam locomotive that was first produced in England in 1802.

Today, it is 2022. Don't you feel shame at that? How about diesel locomotives? Can low IQ idiots such as you can build one? Please send here a commemorative photograph.

BD imports all these things and stupid guys led by @UKBengali celebrate it in this forum telling BD is becoming a highly developed country.

Only a few countries in the world carry a trade surplus.

It’s not necessary because a country has multiple sources of earnings.

Repatriation of profits by ginormous companies and selling of property - plays a big part in the U.K. economy.

For us it’s remittance.

But it needs to be proportionate.

If UKBengali is stupid - god help us all.

He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate - one of the reasons I joined this forum.

We Bangladeshis need to learn civil discourse. Latha lati is not the way! If you want democracy to return - first learn civil discourse.

You are correct but then BD would need to have lots of assets abroad like manufacturing plants.

I think BD is likely to have trade surplus first before it can get to a position that earnings from abroad can balance trade deficit.

You just cant manage a debate without being silly.
Thats youre own merit. Your post falls on its own unreasonablness. Nothing more to say, hearing that from a indian pretending to be bangladeshi.

Why dont you admit you wish you were born in Bangladesh??

Your concern about debt is a valid concern.

By we are not Vietnam.

60 years of communism has given them a good foundation. Millions of people had to die in the process though.

Plus they have plenty of land and resources.

We are not as fortunate as them.

Hence we have to borrow and privatise wisely.

No one gave Bangladesh a chance due its geography and large population.

Hasina has changed people’s perception of Bangladesh.

Give her some credit. She is extremely competent and can handle the big egos.

It doesn’t mean you cannot criticise her e.g. her corrupt cronies and certain family members.

Just be fair and balanced.
What excuses are you giving here for a wrong decision? With the same $12 billion money, Vietnam would have built non-atomic power plants with a total capacity of 12,000 MW instead of BD's 2,400 MW atomic plant.

Every single Pence is valuable and this small money must not be wasted and the GoB wasted a staggering $12 billion plus a $4 billion interest. Please do your own math to calculate the volume of interest payment.

Now, open the link below to know how many coal-fired power plants all the big countries including Russia have. So, Vietnam is right and Hasina Bibi committed a serious crime.

I think he is BD’shi but an anti-Islam atheist.

Nothing wrong with being an atheist and also disagreeing with current BD government but constantly running down Islam and your country is wrong.

Having nuclear reactor gives much more long term benefits than coal fired.

- environment friendly
- no toxic air pollution
- gives Bangladesh knowhow in operating state of the art energy source
- nuclear research
- stable stockpile of fissile material less prown to market swings
- Gives opportunity learn the design of reactor and one day hopefully make own facilities from the scratch

Not mentioning the possible hidden benefits:azn:

I think he only looks at short term price.

Not security, environment, health or price stability.

He is also extremely pro Japanese. Nothing wrong with that.

But clouds his judgment regarding engagement with China and Russia.

If the nuclear plant was built by Japan - I bet he wouldn’t have a problem.

It is indeed a very good question. I appreciate Bilal for bringing it out. See first of all we will have to see if it is haram or halal as per Quran or Hadees then opt for it. If it is haram throw the reactor in bay of bengal or blow it with your suicide vest.Chutiyo it is economical source of energy until you maintain property security measure.

For a typical 1,000 MWe BWR or PWR is n the USA, the approximate cost of fuel for one reload (replacing one third of the core) is about $40 million, based on an 18-month refueling cycle. The average fuel cost at a nuclear power plant in 2008 was 0.49 cents / kWh.

Yes, @UKBengali is the standard bearer of all the BD intelligent people. He was insisting that the Dhaka Metrorail trains would run 100 kph. This is the level of intelligence of probably all who come with two English flags in this forum.

To tell you a funny story; Until approximately a year ago, In Norway we paid 0,25 norwegian kroner NOK pr kWH. Thats equal to 0,04 US dollar back then. Almost all of Norwegian energy comes from hydropower and all of them are owned 100% by local municipalities.

This year we are paying almost 2 - 5 kroner pr kwh = 0,2 - 0,5 USD, and the population is complaining relentlessly, because almost all heating is done by electric source.

What is driving the prices upwards? Norwegian hydroelectricity is being sold in the common european market because they earn a lot more from higher prices there. Russian Gas wars hasnt exactly helped the situation either.

In the only last quarter of 2021 norwegian state apparatus earned more extra money from selling electricity to costumers in norway, than what the government gave in tax relief combined over the previous 8 years!!! :dance3::laughcry::cheesy:
