To celebrate the start of National Vegetarian Week (May 12-21), we've mapped the world according to who eat the most (and the least) meat. The most vegetarian country in the world? That would be Bangladesh, where just four kilos of meat are consumed by a typical person in a typical year, according to 2009 figures (the latest comprehensive statistics we were able to obtain) from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Other fascinating facts about Bangladesh

It is followed by India, Burundi and Sri Lanka, while the top 10 is completed by five African countries: Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Eritrea, Mozambique, Gambia and Malawi.

The 20 countries that eat the least meat
  1. Bangladesh - 4kg of meat per person per year
  2. India - 4.4kg
  3. Burundi - 5.2kg
  4. Sri Lanka - 6.3kg
  5. Rwanda - 6.5kg
  6. Sierra Leone - 7.3kg
  7. Eritrea - 7.7kg
  8. Mozambique - 7.8kg
  9. Gambia - 8.1kg
  10. Malawi - 8.3kg
  11. Ethiopia - 8.5kg
  12. Guinea - 8.6kg
  13. Nigeria - 8.8kg
  14. Tanzania - 9.6kg
  15. Nepal - 9.9kg
  16. Liberia - 10.4kg
  17. Uganda - 11kg
  18. Indonesia - 11.6kg
  19. Togo - 11.7kg
  20. Solomon Islands - 11.9kg
An average UK resident eats 84.2kg of meat each year, putting it 30th on the list, but it will come as no surprise to discover that the biggest guzzlers of animal flesh are our American cousins. A single US resident consumes, on average, 120.2 kilos - 30 times more than those from Bangladesh.

The tiny Middle Eastern state of Kuwait, surprisingly perhaps, comes second, followed by Australia (no shock there, given all those barbies), The Bahamas and Luxembourg. New Zealand, Austria, French Polynesia, Bermuda and Argentina complete the top 10.

It is interesting to note that several of the most meat-hungry countries are also among the most obese. The US is 12th in that respect, Kuwait 9th, the Bahamas 10th, New Zealand 24th and Australia 26th. Those countries for which no data is available appear in grey on the map.

This man is probably not a vegetarian
The 20 countries that eat the most meat
  1. USA - 120kg of meat per person per year

  5. Luxembourg - 107.9kg
  6. New Zealand - 106.4kg
  7. Austria - 102kg
  8. French Polynesia - 101.9kg
  9. Bermuda - 101.7kg
  10. Argentina - 98.3kg
  11. Spain - 97kg
  12. Israel - 96kg

  20. Slovenia - 88.3kg
Vegetarians should take some solace from the fact that meat consumption is declining in half of the countries listed above. Between 2002 and 2009 the amount consumed by US residents fell from 124.8 kilos per person to 120.2, for example, in Luxembourg from 141.7 to 107.9, in New Zealand from 142.1 to 106.7 and in Denmark (previously the world's biggest consumers of meat) from 145.9kg to 95.2kg.

The countries where tourists outnumber locals
A total of 51 countries receive more annual tourists than their total number of residents, with the tiny principality of Andorra tops the charts (you'll need to zoom in to see it). It welcomed 2.36m tourists in 2014, but just 70,000 people call it home. That works out at 33.5 tourists per resident.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, is the least touristy nation on the planet. For every local there is just 0.000776 tourists.

Bangladesh has the lowest BMI on earth.

This report is unbelievable to me. Because it shows Indians per capita consuming more meat than Bangladeshis.

Indians are majority vegetarians or vegans......this is a BS report in my opinion.

Her credibility went out the window with that single statistic.

Bangladeshis are humongous meat eaters. But they are also voracious fish eaters as well.......

What really? I have seen bengalis eat so much cow meat my god this is hard to believe.
On other note... I am not surprised kuwait's people eat so much meat. I mean I am a prime example. But atleast I still am athletic while most Kuwaitis are overweight.

The Bengalis are short and lean. That is a plus point being less obese.

Average Pakistanis eat 14 kg per year hmm

I thought I was gonna see Nilgiri posting even Gambia or Mozambique consumes more meat than Bangladesh.....then I saw they consume more meat than India as well.

Consuming less meat is not a bad thing tho. Sticking to veg and fish is much more healthier. But how can someone not eat this after seeing

Among meats I only like Beef tho. Chicken is meh, Mutton has a weird smell and pork is Haraam....

Your sea food consumption would adequately compensate the protein intake, I don't see any reason to be offended by these stats, They seem to be fair imo.. Meat consumption comes with geographical and cultural reasons as well

Just came back from a 2 week visit to Pakistan and I feel sick eating meat everywhere, when i requested a vegetarian dish to my mom the best they could offer was Loky and Ghosht. People there eat sickening amount of meat
