Protesters burn Moeen’s effigies, demand his trial

Students and political activists across the country on Monday went out on demonstrations against the just retired chief of army staff, Moeen U Ahmed, burning his effigies and asking the government to put him on trial for violating the constitution by going beyond his professional jurisdiction.
Effigies of the former military chief were burnt on the Dhaka University campus and elsewhere in the capital, and Sylhet and demonstrations were held at district headquarters.
Echoing the sentiment, BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed demanded trial of Moeen along with five other military officers. ‘Six military officers, including Moeen, had orchestrated… all designs and work plans to turn Bangladesh into a depoliticised and ineffectual state,’ he said at a briefing at his office.
He called on the government to constitute an all-party probe committee for holding the trial as ‘they tainted the image of the military’ during the emergency rule by trying to implement their own agenda.
The demonstrators asked the government bring charges of ‘sedition’ against Moeen for breaching the constitution and demanded his exemplary punishment for ‘machinations’ to impose a prolonged state of emergency withholding basic rights of the people and conspiring to destroy practice of democracy and political institutions.
Students at Dhaka University brought out a procession under the banner of Students’ Movement against Repression, a platform backed by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, associate body of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and held a rally at Aparajeya Bangla where the speakers held Moeen responsible for oppression on the students of the university and elsewhere centring on a trifling matter on August 21, 2007.
The student leaders said Moeen had resorted to repression on students and arrested teachers in a bid to control educational institutions, especially the Dhaka University, which had a glorious history of movement against military rule.
Speakers at the rally also accused Moeen of targeting student leaders and arresting them to silence their voice against the pseudo-military rule.
Many of the students, arrested and tortured by the military in August 2007, were yet to recover from the injuries and trauma, they said. After the rally, the demonstrators burnt an effigy of Moeen.
New Age correspondent in Rajshahi reports: The city and district unit of BNP’s associate body of students, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, took out a procession in the city demanding arrest of Moeen ‘on charge of sedition.’
Several hundred activists of JCD joined in the procession chanting slogans against Moeen branding him ‘an enemy of the people.’
The protesters held a rally on the Rajshahi College campus where speakers held Moeen responsible for unleashing a reign of terror by wholesale arrest of politicians and businessmen.
Chhatra Dal’s city unit president Abul Kalam Azad Sweet, general secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Riton and Mahbub Alam Kochi spoke at the rally.
Reports from Khulna said the district and city units of BNP held a rally in front of its office on KD Ghosh Road demanding trial of Moeen U Ahmed for his activities during the two years of the military-controlled interim administration.
Presided over by former BNP lawmaker M Nurul Islam, the rally was addressed by BNP lawmaker Nazrul Islam Monju, former lawmaker Kazi Sekendar Ali Dalim, Syeda Nargis Ali, and senior joint-convener of Khulna district BNP, Shafiqul Alam Mona.
The speakers accused Moeen of hatching conspiracies to destroy BNP, depoliticise the country and banish democracy.
After the rally, the party activists marched down the city streets.
New Age correspondent in Sylhet reports: several hundred students and people paraded the city in a procession chanting slogans against the just retried military chief.
Under the banner of Students-People against Repression, the protest march was organised by the activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. They burnt an effigy of Moeen at Court Point.
Speakers at a brief rally asked the government to try Moeen and give him exemplary punishment so that nobody in future would dare to violate the constitution.
New Age correspondent in Magura said the district unit BNP in a meeting demanded exemplary punishment of Moeen for breaching the constitution.

The ruling Awami League spokesperson, Syed Ashraful Islam, on Tuesday said the government, if it desires, could appoint the just retired army chief, Moeen U Ahmed, as an envoy to a foreign mission and there would be no problem in such appointment.
Replying to a question about a rumour that Moeen would be made an ambassador, he said the country has such practice of appointing retired army officers as the country’s envoy to foreign missions.
‘This practice was in the past and would continue in the future and the present government could follow this process,’ said Ashraful, adding that the government, however, had not yet taken any decision in this regard. ‘The issue of appointing him as an ambassador is also speculation.’
He said Moeen went on retirement in normal process on expiry of his tenure and none but he can say what he will do in future.
The AL leader was briefing newsmen after having a preparatory meeting for observing the party’s 60th founding anniversary to be celebrated on June 23. Party senior presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury presided over the meeting held at AL chief Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office to chalk out the programmes.
About people’s demand for putting Moeen on trial for violating the constitution by going beyond his professional jurisdiction, Ashraful, also the LGRD and cooperatives minister, said the Awami League-led alliance government has no plan at this moment to bring him to book. ‘The government has not yet taken any decision in this regard.’
Apparently contradictory was a comment by state minister for public works Abdul Mannan Khan who said that those who had caused even a little damage to the nation or the society must be brought to book.
‘Truth will come to light one day… Those who have caused even a little damage to our nation or the society must face trial. It might be today or tomorrow. Truth will prevail,’ Abdul Mannan said about the two-year tenure of the army-backed interim government’s activities when his attention was drawn to the demand for trial of Moeen.
Responding to a question about the demand for cancellation of the caretaker government system, Ashraful said Awami League had initiated the formula of the caretaker system and the government has no plan to abolish the system.
The AL leader said the government wanted to strengthen the Election Commission and it has no plan to change the present election commissioners at this moment.
Asked about the party’s national council, he said if the party fails to hold its national council within the EC’s timeline then it would write to the Election Commission asking for an extension of the deadline for holding the council.
About the BNP-led opposition parties’ boycott of the budget session of the parliament, Ashraful said they should come back to house to take part in the current session and discuss the national issues.
‘The opposition can raise their demands in the parliament after joining the on-going session,’ he said.

General Moin U. Ahmed and Awami League

General Moin U. Ahmed, the main architect of 1/11, retired a few days ago after serving the BD army as its chief for more than four years. People, by and large, say that he left behind a legacy full of controversies. Some say that he left many bad examples for the BD army personnel. For many BD army officers he will remain an example of a power hungry chief who failed to protect his fellow officers when they needed his help most (during the brutal killings at the BDR headquarters).

Activists of the largest political party in Bangladesh have demanded his trial because of the irreparable damage done to different institutions of the country. Although General Moin U. Ahmed did not take state power in his hands, it is he who ran the country for almost two years from behind the scene. Question may arise 'Why he did not take power in his own hands?' At the same time the counter question can be 'Did he need to become president of the country like General H. M. Ershad?' My opinion is 'No, he did not need to become president' because although on papers Professor Iajuddin Ahmed was the president and Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed was the chief advisor of the care taker government it was Gen. Moin who ran the country from behind. Professor Iajuddin Ahmed and Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed ran the show as per General Moin's directives. He appeared on TV, he presented papers in Seminars, he visited different countries including the USA, etc.

It was not very difficult to see who was at the helm of affairs. Then, unlike General H. M. Ershad he did not get the Green Signal from his Masters to assume state power. However, he was advised to wait and see. His Masters would have given him permission to take over the presidency if they thought that the nationalist forces were going to come back to power. General Moin served his Masters very well. In recognition of his good services he was presented with six (or seven) high quality horses by the Indian army chief, decorated with the highest honor by the South Korean government, etc. Definitely there is a difference between running the affairs of the country as its chief executive (i.e. president) or as the head of the government (i.e. prime minister) and controlling everything from behind the scene. But General Moin was smart enough not to disobey his Masters.

After 1/11 General Moin started giving out Fatwas against the politicians. He said that our political leaders were all corrupt, the political institutions needed to be cleansed. etc. Unfortunately a sizeable portion of the intelligentsia came out to support him openly. He said that the past history of Bangladesh is to be remembered for the failure of the leaders of the political parties to show proper respect to Sheikh Mujibar Rahman. But did he not know that Sheikh Hasina, the proud daughter of Sheikh Mujibar Rahman, ruled the country from 1996 to 2001? As confessed by herself Sheikh Hasina came to politics only to avenge her father's death. Did General Moin not witness the different steps taken by Sheikh Hasina's government to portray Sheikh Mujibar Rahman as a Demi-God?

Why he was feeling so much pain for not seeing Sheikh Mujib's place elevated to the Heavens? It was only because he wanted to rule the country unchallenged. Sheikh Hasina was also very quick to reciprocate to General Moin's gestures by declaring, unilaterally, that her future government (even though there were no signs of an election) will ratify all the actions of the care taker government (controlled by General Moin). It may trouble many to comprehend how could Sheikh Hasina be so confident of her victory in the coming elections. Tne answer is very simple. General Moin was there with the blessings of their COMMON MASTERS to ensure her victory.

General Moin rallied the common citizens of the country behind him by declaring that the main agenda of the care taker government was to bring the corrupt politicians to justice. On his directives the leaders of the largest political parties of the country were arrsted and put behind bars. They were denied bails because the country was under emergency rule. The luxury cars of the corrupt politicians were confiscated, and kept in the open air in different police stations. General Moin declared that those cars will be auctioned off and the money gained will be used to build hospitals. The common citizens saw what happened to those cars.

General Moin wanted to introduce HIS KIND of democracy in Bangladesh. It reminds me of Sheikh Mujibar Rahman's State Principles including democracy and secularism. Sheikh Mujib used to say that all the ideas of democracy, secularism, etc. will come from the land, water, and air of Bangladesh. Unfortunately our nation saw attempts to introduce one party rule in early 1975. I also remember JSD's attempts to introduce SCIENTIFIC SOCIALISM in Bangladesh. One day I asked one prominent leader of the then united JSD to explain the deiffeences between SCIENTIFIC SOCIALISM and the socialism practiced in the then Soviet Union and other European countries. In reply the leader angrily told me that since we were living in the age of SCIENCE, the socialism we will have in Bangladesh must be called SCIENTIFIC SOCIALISM. What a great answer!!

General Moin also wanted to bring changes in our sports arena. One day he told a gathering of sports journalists that under his directives the Bangladesh National Cricket Team will usher in an era of successes. He boasted by saying "Amar style ta alada". (My style is different). We witnessed the successes of our national Cricket Team!! I have not heard that any cricket playing nation (including Pakistan which is mostly run by army generals) forces its top cricketers to undergo vigorous physical training with the army personnel. But General Moin knows better!

Well, why don't I remind the readers that one minister of the current BD government compared General Moin with President Abraham Lincoln for restoring real democracy in Bangladesh! At first I tried to cry when I saw the news. Then I told myself 'the gentle man is a leader of the Awami League'; so, it is very natural that his words will reflect his level of wisdom. At the same time I would like to remind the readers one more time that Sheikh Mujibar Rahman tried to kill democracy by establishing his famous BAKSAL. And it was General Ziaur Rahman who restored multi-party democracy a couple of years later.

To support the power hungry generals is nothing new in Awami culture. The readers may remember that when H. M. Ershad took over state power from the then president Justice Abdus Satter (under the threats of a gun) Sheikh Hasina expressed her joy by saying "I am not unhappy.' When General Nasim, the then chief of BD army, was sacked by the president of the country Mr. Abdur Rahman Biswas for trying to overthrow his government Awami League cried 'foul.' They said that General Nasim was innocent of any wrong doing. One of my senior friends (a staunch Awami supporter) in South Dakota declared "I have known Nasim since our school days in Pakistan. He can not do anything like this." But what happened to General Nasima is a history now. Did Sheikh Hasina give him back his position? Why not?

Anyway, rest assured that Sheikh Hasina and Awami League will never put General Moin to trial. Sheikh Hasina can not be so ungrateful to him. It is only because of General Moin that Sheikh Hasina is back in power. Sheikh Hasina's son Joy is a fan of General Moin. Time will tell us if Sheikh Hasina will appoint General Moin as the permanent representative of Bangladesh at the UN Headquarters or make him Bangladesh's ambassador to the USA. Chances are not bleak though. Joy had the audacity to tell our current ambasador to the USA (Mr. Humayun Kabir) 'You must leave your position soon.' If Joy wants to show his respect and gratitude to the man who saved the political career of his mother (and at the same time paved his way of assuming the leadership of BD Awami League in a few years time), then we may see General Moin as an ambassador of the the People's Republic of Bangladesh. May Allah help Bangladesh and its people.

PM asks party leaders not to comment openly on Moeen trial

The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Monday asked the ruling Awami League leaders to refrain from making public comments on the demand by different quarters for trial of former army chief Moeen U Ahmed, said highly placed sources in the government.

‘Members of Parliament belonging to the ruling party should not speak openly on a sensitive issue like the demand for Moeen’s trial,’ the prime minister was quoted to have said in response to LGRD and cooperatives minister Syed Ashraful Islam. ‘We should talk in unison on issues like this,’ Hasina asserted.

The prime minister’s instruction came at a closed doors meeting of the cabinet members after the regular cabinet meting was over on Monday.

Syed Ashraf raised the issue of some ruling party leaders’ comments in public about growing demand for general Moeen’s trial, and said that they should have a guideline for the ruling party leaders as well as cabinet members to comment on the demand for Moeen’s trial, cabinet sources said.

‘We should take a decision on whether our views should echo that of Moudud Ahmed or decide our own position on the issue,’ Syed Ashraf is said to have told the meeting. ‘By questioning the caretaker government’s activities, we are making [the December 29, 2008] parliamentary election questionable.’
The name of Awami League presidium member Dr Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir, who is reportedly contemplating filing of a case against the activities of the caretaker government, was mentioned in this regard at the meeting.

Notably, when asked about the government’s position on the issue of trial of Moeen, Ashraf told reporters in the past week that there was no such plan.

However, sources close to the prime minister told New Age that she was likely to sit with the party leaders demanding trial of those who had run the caretaker government between January 2007 and December 2008.
Earlier, the cabinet members expressed satisfaction over the High Court’s verdict on Sunday that Bangladesh’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and not Ziaur Rahman, had proclaimed the country’s independence, sources said.

Hasina, however, cautioned her cabinet colleagues not to be ‘delirious with joy when something good happens.’ ‘In this situation, opportunists, who do not want our good, can take the advantage…So we all should remain alert,’ she was quoted by a minister to have said.

The prime minister asked the ministers to work hard to ensure that the proposed budget was implemented hundred per cent. ‘We have no time for doze. We have to deliver on our pledges,’ a source quoted her as saying.

There are number of of lawsuits waiting against Moeen U illegal and repressive activities. That includes lawsuits from businessman and politicians from Awami League and BNP. But off course Hasina being indian stooge trying to save one of RAW's/indian valuable asset - Moeen U by hushing Awami leaders vocal complaints.

There are only few move left that Hasina can play to save this indian asset. If none of these pan out, Moeen U will become more of a liability for RAW and indians. On such case according to notorious and rouge organization RAW's play book, Moeen U elimination will be a priority.

And if that is accomplished then RAW will just use its stooge media machine to blame it on others who are publicly compaining against Moeen U today.

We have to wait and see how next few move to save Moeen U pan out.

Aftermath of February massacre started in Bangladesh

According to vernacular daily Amader Shomoy and Amar Desh, a large number of junior and mid ranking members of Bangladesh Armed Forces are already sacked from their job for their ‘audacious behavior’ with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the then chief of army staff General Moeen U Ahmed. According to these reports, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met the members of armed forces at Sena Kunja auditorium which is located inside Dhaka Cantonment right after the massacre inside Bangladesh Riffles head quarters at Pilkhana in Dhaka. It may be mentioned here that a large number of army officers were brutally murdered and several female members of their families violated by the members of Bangladesh Riffles during February 25-26 this year.

Government of Sheikh Hasina did not allow the members of armed forces and other law enforcing agencies to storm into the Bangladesh Riffles headquarters to rescue the army officers and their family members who were made hostage inside the headquarters of the border security guard by the ‘renegade’ troops. Instead of allowing army crackdown, the government opted for ‘political settlement’ of the situation and sent two of the junior leaders of the ruling party to negotiate with the mutineers. In the name of political negotiation, these junior leaders and later many other figures in the government spent almost 32 hours, thus giving opportunity to the mutineers in killing almost all the army officers who were held hostage inside the headquarters of the border security force and violated large number of female members of their families who were also held inside the BDR headquarters.

Such reluctance of the government naturally annoyed the members of Bangladesh Armed Forces. When the Prime Minister went to meet them at the Sena Kunja auditorium two days after this bloody massacre, quite naturally some of the members of the armed forces were expressing their shock and grievance to the Prime Minister.

But, such natural expression of anger and shock by the members of armed forces was not taken easily by the most questioned chief of army General Moeen U Ahmed. He took personal initiatives in sending a large number of such officers into forced retirement.

We in Blitz, weeks before forecasted that, those officers who were present at the Sena Kunja auditorium and expressed anger would be sacked from their job once the present government was able to tackle the BDR massacre issue. Now, it is proved that the government with the help of former army chief General Moeen has very successfully tackled the BDR massacre issue by prolonging the investigation and diverting or twisting several facts. And, now the government has started sacking those army officers who were annoyed at the death of their colleagues and humiliation of the families of the army officers.

According to Amar Desh report, General Moeen U Ahmed initiated such drastic actions against the members of Bangladesh Armed Forces at the verbal instruction of the ruling party high-ups.

Meanwhile, vernacular daily Amader Shomoy said, some of the army officers were sacked for their involvement in putting the contents of the Sena Kunja meeting on YouTube. Bangladesh government blocked YouTube for several days to stop locals from watching these videos. But, later it was lifted as the video clips were already spread in several portals in the world.

It may be mentioned here that, Amader Shomoy has been running series of campaigns against the military intelligence saying, some ‘rogue’ officers of this agency were behind putting the Sena Kunja meeting contents on YouTube. Several columnists of this newspaper continued writing articles and oped condemning members of Bangladesh Army for ‘depriving the BDR soldiers for decades causing the mutiny’.

Govt dismisses 7 army officers

The government has recently dismissed seven officers of the Bangladesh Army without showing any reasons.

The dismissed officers include a brigadier general, three lieutenant colonels, a major and two captains. Six of the seven were dismissed on June 7 and the other, the brigadier general, on June 23.

The six dismissed on June 7 were lieutenant colonels Shamsul Islam, Mahdi Nasrullah Shahir and Md Shafiul Haque Chowdury, major Mahsinul Karim, and captains AKM Annur Hossain and Habiba Islam.

The sources in the government told New Age on Tuesday the six officers were among those who had raised questions in a Dhaka cantonment durbar, attended by the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on March 1, about the performances of the government in facing the February 25-26 rebellion in the Bangladesh Rifles headquarters in Dhaka.

The reason for dismissal of brigadier general Abdullahil Azmi could not be known immediately. He, however, happens to be son of former Jamaat-e-Islami amir Golam Azam.

Unhappy about the government’s handling the soldiers’ rebellion in the BDR headquarters in which 57 officers killed, the emotionally charged officers, now dismissed, asserted that so many officers would not have been killed if the government had opted for a military assault on the revolting BDR soldiers, instead of deciding a ‘political negotiation’ with the errant soldiers.

The previous chief of staff, General Moeen U Ahmed, who had reportedly approved the government idea of ‘political negotiation’, was present at the durbar, but did not take the responsibility before the wailing as well as agitated officers that day.

The general, on the other hand, was aware of the list of the officers who would speak to the prime minister during the durbar. A source close to a dismissed officer, talking with New Age, claimed that even it was General Moeen who suggested that a female officer should also be there to speak out and thus came the name of Captain Habiba Islam. Again, the officers lost their jobs unceremoniously when General Moeen was commanding the army. Moeen went into retirement on June 15.

General Moeen could not be contacted for comments.

Some of the dismissed officers had, however, complained to the prime minister, as was heard from the conversation released by some quarters on You Tube, the officers were being promoted in the army on political considerations under different political regimes and urged her to resume the practice of promoting them on the basis of their talent and competence.
