The Bangladeshi passport has again ranked the ninth weakest globally as its holder can travel to just 40 out of 227 destinations around the world without a prior visa, according to the second quarter edition of the Henley Passport Index 2022.

The index released on Tuesday by Henley and Partners placed Bangladesh at the 104th position among 112 spots. Kosovo and Libya are also holding the same position.

Bangladesh had ranked 103rd among 111 spots in the first quarter edition of the index published in January this year.

In the fourth quarter edition of the 2021 index, Bangladesh was in the 108th position among 116 spots in the index released last October.

According to the index, among the 40 destinations that a Bangladeshi passport holder can travel to, 15 are in Africa, 11 in the Caribbean, seven in Oceania (excluding Australia and New Zealand), six in Asia, and one in South America.

With a Bangladeshi passport, it is not possible to visit any European country without a prior visa.

Meanwhile, the Japanese and Singaporean passport holders are allowed to go to a record 192 destinations visa-free, which is why both the passports continue to share the top position on the index.

Germany and South Korea hold the second place jointly, with a visa-free or visa-on-arrival score of 190.

Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, and Spain share the third place, as their passport holders are able to access 189 destinations around the world without having to acquire a visa in advance.

Updated quarterly, the recent edition of the index ranked passports of 199 countries in 112 spots according to the number of destinations their holders can travel to without a prior visa.

The index is based on exclusive and official data from the International Air Transport Association.

The passport of the Maldives is the most powerful in South Asia (ranked 60th), enabling visa-free entry to 88 countries, followed by India (84th), Bhutan (91st), and Sri Lanka (103rd).

Bangladesh is in the fifth position in South Asia, above Nepal (106th) and Pakistan (109th).

Afghanistan is at the bottom of the ranking in South Asia and also in the world. Its people can visit only 26 destinations worldwide without acquiring a visa in advance.

What factors come in play in these rankings? Why is Bd ranked so low? I can understand Pak being almost at the bottom but not Bd. Is it some thing do with it being a Muslim country? Maybe Islamophobia?

Not really.

More due to politics as India has better political relations with other countries compared to BD. The other reason maybe that BD is still an LDC and so that may also put some countries off from giving visas to BD'shis on arrival

As examples, Indians can travel to countries like Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Thailand and Serbia without a prior visa unlike BD'shis. None of these countries is any BD'shi arrival likely to be interested in staying as an illegal overstayer.

It depends upon how active your government is working to get that visa on arrival for its citizens. That's how UAE now has one of the best passports. The government made it a priority to discuss it whenever they went on foreign tours.

El Salvador a country that's routinely rated as the most dangerous country in the world has Schengen visa free access but countries considered much safer don't have it. Depends how active your Foreign consulates are to avail it for their citizens.

Partly but main reason is your level of economic development.

Rich countries always worry about visa overstayers from poor countries.

A country like Namibia with a per capita of less than $5000 has visa free access to UK while countries twice as rich don't. Countries ravaged by war and ganglands like Hondurus and El Salvador has schengen access. Most of it is down to your foreign office.

Finance Minister Mustafa should organize street demonstrations in every country's Capital of the developed Christian world to claim its position at the top five in the Passport index.

After all, BD is a $500 billion economy.

We have a massive population and visa free access will become a problem for all but the poorest countries - we can all understand that.

Until BD becomes not only per capita rich, but also quality of life rich, Bangladeshis will keep emigrating. And that's very difficult to achieve for everyone with the population numbers we have.

It has to do with people overstaying visas, i guess.

Bangladeshis are no different than other SA nations in that regard.

I agree population is a problem. That is why China despite being a high income country now does not have a good passport in terms of visa access.

I see many Chinese nationals working in Japan.

Once we get to middle income status as a country, this is bound to change....
