Bangladeshi citizens can no longer own more than 60 bighas of land. If someone owns more than 60 bighas of land, the government will acquire the additional land.

The cabinet gave final approval to the draft of the Land Reform Act-2023 with this provision in its regular meeting held at the Prime Minister's Office at Tejgaon in the capital on Monday (28 August).

However, this provision will not apply to cooperative societies, owners of tea gardens, coffee, rubber and fruit orchards or land producing raw materials of industrial factories, Cabinet Secretary Mahbub Hossain said while briefing reporters at the secretariat after the meeting.

He said landowners of export-oriented industrial and agro-processing activities, waqfs and religious trusts will also be out of this provision.

"If an individual possesses over 60 bighas of land (33 shotok per bigha), the government will be able to acquire the additional land," he explained.

Apart from this, violating the land law will be punishable with a fine of Tk1 lakh or one-month imprisonment or both.

A decent law if it were only restricted to personal property not meant for commercialisation/ production but instead they created the law and made exemptions where they thought makes sense. Not a great way to go about it, there will pop up places it should be allowed but they just didn't think of it.

Communist or not, Bangladesh, specially places where most people live such as in Dhaka, have limited space. Or buy with black money! Take loan , start development project, spend 3/4 times ( necessary for loot) !

But common folks can't buy more than 60 bighas because they buy with white money!

As usual, full of many loopholes. This law does not say anything about the limit of land ownership by a family. This is but another new Insincere BAL law that will cause a family to own 1000 bigha or more.

The law says of individual ownership of 60 bigha. An Islamic Mullah like @Saiful Islam may have four or more wives and twenty children from different mothers.

So, with 25 members, his family can legally own 1500 bigha or 500 acres of land. 60 bigha x 25 members.
