DHAKA
— A Buddhist monastery in Bangladesh is serving food to hundreds of poor Muslims during Ramadan, in a rare example of social harmony between the religions in the South Asian nation.

Dharmarajika, in the capital Dhaka, has become a hit on social media since it started distributing daily food packs for Muslims who break their fast during the holy month at sunset, known as Iftar.

“Buddhism taught us that serving humanity is the ultimate religion. We are feeding the poor Muslims who cannot afford to buy proper meals to break their fast,” Suddhananda Mahathero, the head monk of the monastery, said.

When AFP visited on Monday evening, more than 300 Muslims were waiting at the gate of the monastery in Dhaka’s Basabo neighborhood to receive some Iftar delicacies.

“I can eat some good food served with love and care,” said 70-year-old Amena Khatun, who added that she had walked several kilometers to get there.

As a young monk distributed tickets to hungry Muslims, police were on hand to ensure the process remained orderly.

“This is such a wonderful example of religious harmony: showing respect and affection to the fasting neighbors without thinking of the difference of religions,” said policeman Asad Uzzaman.

Muslims make up around 90 percent of Bangladesh’s 160 million population, with a tiny community of Buddhists residing mostly in the country’s southeastern districts bordering Myanmar.

In September 2012, tens of thousands of Muslims vandalised and torched nearly a dozen Buddhist temples in the south of the country following allegations that a Buddhist man had desecrated the Koran.

Many Muslims took to social media to thank the Dharmarajika monastery for their food distribution, posting photos on Facebook of the yellow-clad monks handing out supplies. Others praised the monks on Twitter.

“I really appreciate the initiative and thank them,” Nur Hossain, a banker, told AFP.

The monastery was established in 1949 and is home to more than 700 orphans who study at a free school it runs. — AFP

I think the title is terrible.

Buddhists have a soft spot for Muslims in this region, because of extreme oppression of local Buddhists in the hands of successive Hindu dynasties in pre-Islamic Northern India.

As an example..
Wikipedia/Pushyamitra_Sunga said:
According to the Tibetan Buddhist Historian, Taranatha, "the brahmana king, Pushyamitra, along with other tirthikasas, started war and thus burnt down numerous Buddhist monasteries from the madhyadesha to Jalandhara. They also killed a number of vastly learned monks. As a result, within five years, the doctrine was extinct in the north (Taranatha, 1970: 121).[24]

As an example..

Muslims invaders were saints who did no harm to buddhist monastries and did not burn down several important manuscripts

Its Bengali Muslims were mostly Buddhists. Since 11th century Brahmin migrated people started to convert Bengalis in low caste. So we have always soft heart for Buddhist people. But its idiot people start injecting religious hatred among communities. I have never seen in Bengali Muslims attacking Buddhists. Its only Rohingyas issue started tension. Also exodus of Bengali Buddhists today created the country named Srilanka. And our Buddhist people in the past created the kingdom of Marak U in Arakan under protectorate of Bengali Sultanate, today under Burmese possession.

Its actually true. It reminds me of soft corners shown to Muslims from Buddhists in Burma and Sri Lanka. May the Buddhists continue to show these kind of soft corners to Muslims in Burma, Sri Lanka and of course China.

I know what you're referring to. But Muslim invaders, apart from acts of vandalism during battles, were mostly interested in wealth and had no problems with tax paying Buddhist subjects. It's totally different from planned, systematic annihilation of a civilization that the Hindu Rajas were intent on doing. Ever wondered why there aren't many Buddhists in Northern India, the land where Buddhism originated? I'm not making up history, your Indian history scholars and academics can confirm this.

@Biplab Bijay I'm talking about Northern India. I don't know much about Burma or Sri Lanka's history to comment on the Buddhist-Muslim relation in those regions.

Yes there were unrest among few extremists among both sides in SL last year.. But nothing in comparison to what happened elsewhere in the sub continent like Gujarat or Bombay.. Overall Buddhists and Muslims in Sri Lanka get along well

Then you should know about Burma or Sri Lanka. If you associate Northern India with this soft corners, then I will associate Burma and Sri Lanka with that too.
By the way we have a Buddhist King named Ashok from North India. I am sure you have heard about him too.

hope no one is killed because of serving veg food to muslims !

Yes you are right again. Its nothing in comparison to what happened in subcontinent by Invaders long a go, may be greater than Mumbai and Gujrat too. Continents have been invaded and destroyed in the Name of religion which were glorified now by subcontinental people. May the Buddhist and Muslims of Burma, Srilanka and China continue to get along the way they are doing now.

Ashoka's conversion was a turning point in Buddhist history and help spread the religion across much of the subcontinent. But that was in the early days of Buddhism. You're confusing different periods of India's history - being an Indian you should know better.

Don't know much about Burma, but know that the mostly Hindu British Indian army protected the Rohingyas and helped fight back the Buddhist Rakhines during the last great race riot in Arakan. The conflict has always had a racial angle to it.

Edit: Ok I'm off, got stuff to do, enough history lessons for a day. :D:wave:
