Bangladesh wants to join TAPI pipeline

Bangladesh wants to join Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) natural gas pipeline as the country needs huge gas to keep up the trend of development.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said this on Sunday when Turkmenistan’s non-resident ambassador to Bangladesh Parakhat Durdyev met him at his Secretariat office.

The state minister hoped the TAPI gas pipeline will open a new door of potentialities in the region.

The Turkmenistan ambassador welcomed the interest of Bangladesh to join TAPI project.

Parakhat Durdyev said there is scopes for doing more works for the two countries in the petro product related sector.

The ambassador said gas is going to Hong Kong from Turkmenistan through the pipeline while CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is also going to Afghanistan, Iran and China.

During the meeting, Parakhat Durdyev handed over an innovation letter to Nasrul Hamid to join the 28th conference of International Energy Charter on November 28 and 29 in Turkmenistan’s capital of Ashgabat.

Bangladesh wants to join TAPI pipeline

I believe BD joining TAPI gas pipeline project will strengthen its economic muscle. Turkmenistan has probably the largest gas field in the world. I am eager to see what next steps are taken by the concerned parties. Turkmenistan is talking about supplying gas to Hongkong. Does it mean the line will pass through BD land? In that case it will be a very long trans-Asian pipeline which will benefit all the countries along the route.

I am not quite sure that TAPI has even started..last time i heard..it was india who backed out. After that no news on it. So what Bangladesh is looking for in this project?

India probably had two options. One is TAPI and the other is a large gas field in the Persian Gulf under Iran from which it will bring gas via an undersea pipeline to the Bombay shore. As Pakistan was not mindful to cooperate on TAPI, India opted for the Iranian gas. I just do not know, why at this time BD is showing interest on TAPI. It is useless if Pakistan wants to remain isolated and does not give access to the TAPI pipeline, which will also benefit Pakistan in multiple ways. Not only that it will get the TAPI gas, it will also get fees from India and BD as the pipeline will go through its territory. Anyway, let us hope for the best outcome from the TAPI negotiations in the future.

only awami al-cowda extremist will propagate such awami nonsense. TAPI has not even left the dream box of US, all the while Afghan and Pakistani fronts are at war for endless future. Ruling awami idiot minister raised this non starter with "Turkmenistan’s non-resident ambassador", who has ZERO authority or influence over such unattainable project. Now come awami league al-cowda mouth piece "bluesky" to promote such propaganda. Any takers other than awami al cowda cheer leaders; none.

Didn't knew tapi was still alive.
This project has no stem as it is crossing through most unstable part of the world, i.e Af-pak.
Not sure india and bangladesh would like to invest in such volatile and unstable region.

CASA-1000 and this shitty TAPI was shoved to us by uncle sam, world bank etc when Iran was itching for Gas and power supply deal with Pakistan.. i dont think these projects will ever be completed especially after growing interests of south Asian countries in LNG imports they are not so eager and willing to complete these projects.. at most Pakistan will complete its part of Pakistan-Iran pipeline for its need..

We were never against bharati involvement in TAPI nor IPI, your western neighbor left both on their own will since they dont want to rely on Pakistan for anything, if we have problem, we wouldn't have signed the contracts in presence of Manmohan and Modi.

I am rather surprised at your naivety. A resident or non-resident, it makes no difference because he is also an Ambassador to BD. May be his direct posting is in a different Capital. Issue here is not the Turkmenistan ambassador, but if TAPI is still alive. Without Pakistan this project will not go beyond the meeting room.

Your point of view is entirely wrong..it was not Pakistan who refused to cooperate..it was india who backed down..Pak was all in for TAPI.....when u r getting gas from a supplier..then supplier needs to know..the consumption requirement...so the design of pipeline can be finalized..with india getting out
1. the pipeline couldn't proceed even from designing ohase
2. india is a major economic centre and can provide huge money for the progress of project....but wen it decided to not join TAPI the financial future also went became uncertain
get some facts and then issue statements...now bangladesh needs india to get to TAPI....make india ready..then everything will be fine
And underwater gas pipeline is really an expensive and seems to me not a feasible idea.

. .
I don't think this project will ever materialize in the next hundred of years.Bar Turkmenistan, all countries involve are in each other's throat.

Yes, I think I was wrong in my assumption and now I remember that India backed out of TAPI project because it was anxious that Pakistan would someday blackmail it and disconnect the pipeline. So, it is a pre-requisite that all the relevant countries bring about trusting relationship among them. Without this the countries will keep on suffering. Turkmenistan without this south Asian vast market, and Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and now BD - all will suffer by not getting a secured and ample quantity of gas supply.

Countries should invest less in money eating projects like LNG re-gasification plant including specialized jetties and tank yards, and more in cost-effective pipeline projects like TAPI. Turkmenistan suffers because it cannot enter the Asian market because of Afg-Pak-India squabbling, and the four countries cannot get the real benefit of cheap investment in TAPI pipeline.

We aren't going to build a pipeline thousands of miles to bnglsh. They cant even afford to pay for the gas, forget about recovering cost for the pipeline.

Oh!! Why are you getting so miser not to spend even a few bucks for your small cousin in the east? Anyway, India has to build TAPI line up to Calcutta. So, it makes more economic sense for it to extend the line to BD border and ask it to pay money for the long journey from Pakistan, although big Dada itself is unwilling to pay us handsomely when they use our land to trade between the mainland India and Indian NE. Double standard!!

Well i dont know how they look at it in Bangaladesh, but i am not seeing any desperation from either Pakistan or bharat to complete TAPI, IP, or proposed undersea pipeline from bharat to Iran, it seems both are fine with LNG imports and doing significant investment in its infrastructure already..

If we had any power and our posts made any difference we would be negotiating about pipeline, who is building which part , and who is investing more, and work would be started in 10 days.

But reality is our posts makes no difference , realpolitic is more complex that we think and it is never black and white. For example look at saarc, how pakistan blocked every project meant for the good of south asia. For some project saarc had to move keeping pakistan out. India took a lesson from this to conclude that pakistan will never let tapi run smoothly for the benefit of south asia. Economic development of south asia is not their core interests.

If you don't know about it don't talk nonsense about how Pakistan backed out it was India who thought tapi is not for them so stop blaming Pakistan for all your problems all you people know is how to hate Pakistan
