Bangladesh wants to have S Asia's largest airport

too much dreams are not good for health :)
you have to think realistic there is so many variable plus minus this and that

Delhi airport handles 56 million passengers growing at the rate of 20 + pct per annum. Mumbai 46 mil and same. Dhaka 7 million.

Delhi is already building terminal 4. Mumbai already building a new sister airport and upgrading existing they are handling more flights per hour than Heathrow.

Sure BD deserves nice shiny clean efficient airports. But how will it be SAs largest will be interesting to see.

I just wish AL govt does not follow what you say here on investing own money on face lifting projects like a multi-billion dollar new airport. In reality, BD state coffer collects little money from the internal sources. It is because BD wealth base is very weak and it collects little as taxes from the people that can be used on national development. Most are outside money that are used every year to build a road here or a bridge there. Our GDP is quite small to spend on extravagant works.

Well I cannot see this airport starting being built before 2025. There will be two big changes by then:

1. Tax/GDP ratio should get to around 15% by then from the current 10%
2. Economy will have doubled by then.

So even though it will not be desirable to use own funds to build an airport that could cost around 10 billion US dollars,
BD will then be in a much better position to absorb the hit to it's budget from the outlay needed.

Personally I would like to see BD keep using it's own funds after the completion of the Padma Bridge to build the Dhaka-Chittagong elevated expressway. BD needs to get used to spending some of it's own money to build mega-projects. It should look to completely eliminate all foreign funding for it's infrastructure in the 2025-2030 time period.

The country is not run by the amateur keyboard warriors, who see things that do not exist, but cannot see things only a meter away or what is written on the wall. Instead of pipe dreaming, people should also know that GoB is making fantastic efforts to seek JICA fund to build a railway bridge over Jamuna that will cost about $1.2 billion, much cheaper than the $7 billion price tag of new international airport.

The keyboard warriors should ask themselves if all these projects can be done with the poor man BD's own money. Moreover, funding must be supported by design know how , construction machines and technology. BD has no money and machines, and its people have very little knowledge or technology. We should not dream of building a palace on thin air. The palace will fall down and it may create uncontrollable inflation.

Well I did not say this project should be done with our own money too...... Just saying this administration has the spine to do something like this
No, this administration has a bad habit of putting many things in the mouth at the same time that it cannot properly chew and swallow.

Bangladesh wants to have S Asia's largest airport

Bangladesh is contemplating to construct a new airport, which is to be the largest in South Asia.

The mega international airport will be built on the outskirts of capital Dhaka, as part of its efforts to have a new international airport, a Planning Ministry official told Xinhua Thursday.

Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said the government will construct the airport on the west bank of Padma River where wide-bodied aircraft equivalent to Airbus A380 could land and take off.

"We're keen to construct the airport so that it can function as one of the key airports of the South Asia region," he said.

No further details were available about the project which is still under planning stage.

Bangladesh has been making many mega infrastructure projects centering the largest Padma bridge.

The 25-meter-wide and 10-km-long bridge is being built over Padma River, one of the three major rivers in Bangladesh.
