Bangladesh urges India to withdraw ban on onion export

Bangladesh has requested the Indian government to withdraw the ban imposed on onion export as soon as possible, keeping the import flow of onion from India uninterrupted. Bangladesh expects a positive outcome in this regard soon, reports UNB. State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam cam

Bangladesh has requested the Indian government to withdraw the ban imposed on onion export as soon as possible, keeping the import flow of onion from India uninterrupted.
Bangladesh expects a positive outcome in this regard soon, reports UNB.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam came up with the information while talking to reporters at his office on Tuesday.

He said Bangladesh raised the issue with the Ministry of External Affairs, India through Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi immediately after noticing the ban.

Shahriar said there is an unwritten understanding that India will inform Bangladesh beforehand while taking any decision on such a ban.

He referred to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's remarks she made during her Delhi visit in October 2019 on the same issue when India imposed a ban on onion export.

“I wish you had informed us before suddenly putting a halt in export of onions. I had to tell my cook I’ve no other option but to have my food without onions. I would request India to please inform us beforehand while taking such an action. After all, we’re neighbours,” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in Hindi at a programme in India in October last year (according to Indian media).

After that, onion import from India became normal.

The State Minister said those who went for stocking onions to hike the prices suffered financial losses as Bangladesh imported onions also from other countries.

Shahriar said the Ministry of Commerce is looking into the onion issue.

The unexpectedly heavy rains in Central india have severely damaged most of the almost market ready crops of onions, so sudden export ban was necessary to prevent onion prices from skyrocketing.

Onions are onions and they almost taste the same, whether it be Chinese onions or European onions, sure there are types of onions but thats doesn't mean Indian white onion would be any different than Chinese white onion. The prices of onions has risen steeply in the past few months after India imposed a ban on exports, triggering frantic buying and resultant shortages.

Chinese onions started flowing into Kathmandu’s markets almost immediately after supply from India ceased exports. Traders say that if the trend continues, the fiery red bulbs could make the list of largest imports from across the Himalaya.
In fiscal 2018-19, Nepal bought goods worth Rs917 billion from India, accounting for 64.7% of total imports. Nepal's imports from China were valued at Rs205 billion, accounting for 14.5%of imports.
India slapped a ban on onion exports in September to maintain domestic availability, causing severe shortages over Asia, including Nepal.
Smugglers jumped to take advantage of the embargo, and they started slipping the vegetable into the country through the leaky Nepal-India border. The price of contraband onions hit a new high of Rs250 per kg in the Kathmandu Valley, costing the same as chicken meat.
Binaya Shrestha, deputy director at the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Committee, said that the reason behind the high price of Chinese onions was transportation costs.

I lived in US for 10 years, if that counts.

I'll list out the reasons why.

1. Like I said, Indian onions have pungent flavor that adds to taste of south asian cuisine. Chinese onion lacks this.

2. It takes 25 days to get shipment from China to Bangladesh and 40 days to get it from Egypt. With India they get it in 2-3 days. Longer duration adds to transportation cost as well as losses due to spoilage.

3. The quantities that is to be replaced is huge and no country exports as much onions as India.

Here we are not about mangoes, tomatoes or whatever, if the conversation is only limited to onions you will get the answer. Now, here is what you answered to my reply. Btw, am not a chef by profession, since you think that "the pungent flavor" of the onion is really what makes or breaks a dish. I would contest that, it doesn't really matter since after cooking you hardly get that pungent smell/taste. Btw, alot of people dip onions in water with salt just to get rid of that pungent smell, its definitely not a positive but a negative. And since you talked about cuisine, which dish relies on onion's pungent taste/smell and is vital for that dish to exist?

Secondly, since you think that indian onions are very vital for indian cuisine, did you specifically bought indian onions while your 10 year stay in US? If so from where did you buy those for that long period of a time, and that too ensuring those were indian onions?

Indian/Bengali fish curries, Veg curries all of them. Gravy base is mainly onion and tomato. Since you don't know this. All tikka masalas that you get in restaurants are all onion base. I am a restaurateur, so I know this.

3) If so from where did you buy those for that long period of a time, and that too ensuring those were Indian onions? Tell me the place and when I have time, I will ask them about the availability of Indian onions in their shop(obviously asking about US shop, not your local Indian shop).

Chinese onion doesn't suit our cuisine.

All are just habit . There are something in Bangladesh named deshi onion and Indian onion . Our deshi onion is much better than Indian onion.

However in crisis we use Indian onion bevy sometimes deshi onion is out of market .

So in future we will get used to other countries onion . Habit is the second nature. So any onion will be fine if we make it habit .
