While four Asian countries accounted for approximately 95 per cent of known ship scrapping in last year across the world, Bangladesh tops the league, according to a latest report of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

The report showed that some 7,419 thousands of gross tons of old ships were demolished in Bangladesh in the last year, followed by 4,940 thousands of gross tons in India; 4,143 thousands of gross tons in Pakistan; and 3,970 thousands of gross tons in China.

Some 23,037 thousands of gross tons of old ships were reportedly sold for demolition across the world last year, according to the Review of Maritime Transport 2016. UNCTAD released the annual review report last month.

The report also showed that in 2015, the most tonnage demolished was of dry bulk carriers. It was 5,758 thousands of gross tons in Bangladesh; 3,559 in Pakistan; 3,136 in India; and 2,895 in China.

Tonnage is generally a measure of the cargo-carrying capacity of a ship.

“Among the other vessel types, Pakistan had the highest share of oil tankers, India of container ships and Bangladesh of offshore,” it said.

I hope one day India's name is out of that list. Once India was no.1 , good to see us falling behind.

Feels good to be at top of something not related to corruption or population

Why? Is it a bad thing to scrap ships?

It is probably the most hazardous job with poor workers working in most inhumane condition for meagre wages risking their lives.

Ahh.... I see. But still it can be good if the workers are provided with modern equipments and given some facilities. But in poor countries like ours it doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon.

Ship Scrapping is extemely pollutant and also detrimental for the work force in the long run. For now its ok as people need work but as income raises, it will be phased out in the future.
