Bangladesh to spend $6.17 bln on oil imports | Energy & Oil | Reuters

DHAKA, July 17 (Reuters) - Bangladesh will spend $6.17 billion on importing oil in the 2011-12 fiscal year, more than double the previous year, as it buys more fuel at higher cost to fire up new power plants aimed at easing electricity shortages, a senior energy official said.

"This year (July-June) the state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) will import 7.03 million tonnes of fuel oil, up from 5.4 million in 2010-11," BPC chairman Mohammad Muqtadir Ali told Reuters on Sunday.

" The cost of the import at current prices is estimated at $6.17 billion, against $3 billion last year," he said.

The government has allocated 224.7 billion taka ($3 billion) as a subsidy in various sectors including agriculture and for fuel in the 2011-12 budget, compared with 194 billion taka the previous year, said an official of the finance ministry.

"The import cost and subsidy are going up because of price rises in the international oil market, and for additional imports to run oil-fired power plants."

BPC is the sole oil importer and distributor in the country.

Muqtadir said the fuel import would increase mainly due to the setting up of about 30 oil-operated power plants.

In the last two and a half years, the oil price has nearly tripled in international markets. In December 2008, oil was trading at $34 a barrel. It is now hovering around $97.

The subsidy in the energy and power sectors increased about 280 percent last year, a document of the finance ministry showed.

We seriously need to look for other sources to produce electricity, the price of oil is gonna sky rocket as the world economies are picking up pace. We cant spend a huge chunk of our money on oil alone

Why don't you consider thorium reactors as an option? Nuclear energy is clean, long lasting and generates for long term. It will propel your industries.

Reactors are on the pipeline, should take 6-7 years before we see
them run.

Good 4 Bangladesh
How is this good, its too expensive remember Bangladesh is developing country not a developed country with an advanced economy. We need something that will last for long not importing Oil every year; Such as Nuclear power plants...

Integra says that you will get nuke plants within the coming 6-7 years.

enough freedom you bengalis and Indian have had.. now time for some restriction. how is this topic related to defence section?? Bangladeshi people are trying hard to degrade the quality of this forum but wait sometimes till mods turn you guys pic.. go to some BD forum and discuss these garbage topics. this section is only to discuss defence related topic
remember this from now onwards

If all goes well a 2GW Russian nuclear power plant should come online by 2017.

To put this into perspective, the total generation of capacity of BD by then is not likely to be much more than 10-12GW anyway, so this nuclear power plant will supply an immense amount of power to propel the BD economy into the future.

Germans are 'freezing' their nuclear reactors.
Let them do so, I know it is very dangerous and nuclear does have adverse effects but it has to be done in Bangladesh; the electricity is very feeble it must be done otherwise our economy will crumble with factors like this. If it is done then we will see better economic growth. I'm sure the Germans have already devised a plan to replace their nuclear plants.

Bangladesh at high risk of tremor any moment

Although Bangladesh bears no relation with the recent devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the country is highly vulnerable to tremors due to its geological structure, tectonic set-up and geographical location. According to a geologist, Bangladesh is located in the northeastern part of the Indian sub-continent at the head of the Bay of Bengal, reports UNB.''

Tectonically, it lies on the northeastern Indian plate near the edge of the Indian carton and at the junction of three tectonic plates - the Indian Plate, the Eurasian Plate and the Burmese microplate.

Dr Syed Humayun Akhter, Professor of Geology, Dhaka University, said these form two long active tectonic structures where plates converge - the India-Eurasia plate boundary to the north forming the Himalaya Arc, and the India-Burma plate boundary to the east forming the Burma Arc......

He said the probability of an earthquake from a given fault depends on the rate of motion and on the time since the last rupture. Active faults of regional scale capable of generating moderate to great earthquakes are present in and around Bangladesh.

Prof Humayun said these include the Dauki fault, about 300 km long trending east-west and located along the southern edge of the Shillong Plateau (Meghalaya-Bangladesh border), the 150 km long Madhupur fault trending north-south situated between Madhupur Tract and Jamuna flood plain, the Assam-Sylhet fault, about 300 km long trending northeast to southwest located in the southern Surma basin, and the Chittagong-Myanmar plate boundary fault, about 800 km long running parallel to the Chittagong-Myanmar coast.

He said: "As Bangladesh is located at the junction of the India Plate, Burma microplate and Tibet sub-plate, the country is very much vulnerable to earthquakes. A number of major and devastating earthquakes jolted the region in the past 500 years, as well as in geological history."

Prof Humayun, also Director of the Seismology and Geodesy Division, Dhaka University Earth Observatory, said another tectonic element, the 'Himalayan Arc' is characterized by three well-defined fault systems that are 2500 km long stretching from northwest syntaxial bend in Pakistan in the west to the northeast syntaxial bend in Assam in the east.

"The Himalayan Arc is only 400 kilometres north of Dhaka. It poses a great threat to Bangladesh as significantly damaging historical earthquakes have occurred in this seismic belt. A huge amount of energy is stored in the seismic gap of this belt and it may be released at any moment."....

The whole article is quite an eye-opener for not only Bangladesh, but also for the neighbouring areas.

^^You build your dam in an earthquake prone zone,
we build a crappy reactor just beside WB. If the day
comes all will bite the dust!
