Bangladesh to soon grant India direct access to Chittagong port

Bangladesh used to get Indian goods via Singapore port
Thats pretty nonsense, increases both time & price of the goods. Why not get it from calcutta err Kolkata ?

Excellent move by Sheikh Hasina govt. We should give access to India to all our ports (land and sea). And then we should demand the following:

1. Access to all Indian land and sea ports for Bangladesh goods so we can export to India's land neighbors and use Indian deep sea ports
Agreed,
Bangladesh should certainly use land route across India to ship goods to middle east instead of circumventing peninsular south india. It will take less time and make goods more competitive price wise.

BD is part of india why need permission ?

Desis, especially Bengalis love bureaucracy :D

2. Fair share of river water for all common rivers

Which of our sea ports exclusively control access to any of our neighbours? You trade with them already through land....and anything regarding Pakistan or SL, you can take up their sea ports with them.

I meant land ports for export to Nepal and Bhutan and deep sea container ports to handle export containers of Bangladesh. Currently they are going via Singapore using feeder container vessels. I checked Paradip and Vizag ports, both are deep sea ports but handling mainly coal, iron ore and other bulk goods, I did not see much container traffic there. Going too far to the Western ghat or the southern most point will cost more than sending feeders via Singapore, so it may not be feasible.

There is major port expansion plan upcoming for India. But the direct trade route problem was resolved already through the Coastal shipping agreement, it has nothing to do with deep sea facilities, since there are plenty of medium ships and unused capacity in many of India's ports.....we don't need megasized long distance container ships for sea trade between India and Bangladesh.

The barriers that are left are more to do with non-tariff barriers

What exactly are the specific issues regarding the land ports?

There seem to be enough:

Land Ports - Banglapedia

Both sides should mutually expand them and upgrade them as the trade amounts organically grow in the years to come....if for example demand in Nepal and Bhutan for your wares increases by any substantial amount...and/or vice versa....on top of what happens regarding India/Bangladesh land based trade.

We should get transit facility to Nepal and Bhutan, just like you get transit to NE India and get to use our ports for shipping to and from India as well as other 3rd countries. This will give a great boost to NE India connecting it with rest of India and the world.

As for container ports, I was talking about shipping Bangladeshi export containers to US and EU through Indian deep sea ports where the major shipping lines panamax container ships stop by. For import/export to or from far east, I think Singapore feeders makes more sense as it is closer to those areas. I found two possible Panamax ports in India close to Bangladesh:

Dhamra Port - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But the land travel cost and time might be too expensive compared to feeder vessel time to Singapore, so this may develop and become feasible in the future.

You do get that now (BBIN). It was not a one-way agreement. Even before you were exporting to Nepal and Bhutan through India. Bangladesh trade was even affected by the exact same border Nepal agitations that India trade was.

Now things are becoming even easier:

Bangladesh priority is its own exports/imports and India likewise is its own as well....hence both countries are reponsible for developing their ports as resources become available. What is the exact need for Bangladesh to export/import across land to Indian deep sea ports? That is something far into the future when trade volumes of the entire region are so high that multiple channels are needed on regional basis to optimize goods flow. Right now we are still exporting/importing so little per capita....value and volume wise....that any increase is easily covered by just increasing our own ports capacity in the relevant areas. It will be like that for at least another 10 years or so. Then we can look at further integration for further optimization and growth in context of region to global based trade. Inter-regional sea trade should be sorted out first and foremost to grow to such levels and demands in the first place (make use of local economies of scale and logistics advantages).

Well of course Singapore makes much more sense for those (eastern based trade). I'm talking purely about India - Bangladesh sea trade. With the coastal shipping agreement, more sea trade between Bangladesh and India can flourish....taking pressure off the land trade and also making much more goods economically viable to trade (since they dont need to be routed through Singapore). The entire logistics is simplified, since you will have more capacity available that is targeted only for Eastern based customers (and you can increase that independently easily) for what you send to Singapore....and India based trade is handled directly port to port. Its goods changing through fewer hands and going less distance and time...win win for everyone involved.

With Indian port capacity expansion you can then look at Indian ports on Arabian sea for transshipment points via suez canal as relevant....instead of places like Dubai etc....since again you will be saving distance and time. But that of course depends more on global logistic optimization....and that may take time to mature and depends on India vastly increasing its trade with the world to begin with.

Grant us access too, i mean Indonesia need some foothold to penetrate South Asian market. India and Bangladesh and Pakistan had great markets in which not heavily saturated by most of our competitor from ASEAN.

Between 2012-13 BD exported to Indonesia over $50m worth goods while imported over $1b worth.
Exported to Thailand $94m worth while imported over $1b worth.
Exported to Singapore $156m worth while imported over $1.4b worth.
Exported to Malayasia over $100m worth while imported little less than $2b worth.

Seems like we have pretty similar scenario in most of the ASEAN countries.

Soon Bangladeshi people will have to fight another war of liberation because Sheikh Hasina wants to make Bangladesh Indian colony and possible annexation of Bangladesh by India. Good wise move from B.G govt.

Others just buy a few farmed shrimp and thats about it.

If BD is ever annexed by its mighty neighbor we will make sure to curb out its East and NE region as a whole next time. Dont worry about us, oil your own machine. Because of importance of Pakistan we lost WB and significant part of East last time. While we are the fox in the hen house.

It is not the impotence of Pakistan but the traitors who sold themselves for few takas and started to kill own civilians. Bangladesh always a weak point of security reason if not then separated then it will be used as a blackmail till this day, no other nation have two parts 1500kms from each other.

Im not here talking about 71. During partition we had no Bengalis on bargaining table to mark our boundary in the East. UP, Gujju these people made the deal awarding our WB and significant East portion to India to have better deal in the west region.
