Bangladesh to join Trilateral Highway with India, Myanmar and Thailand? Yet to be decided

Since India has been working towards increasing its engagements with South East Asia under its `Act East Policy’ the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway is one of the biggest infrastructure projects in the region.
For enhancing connectivity between South and South East Asia, Bangladesh has expressed interest to join the ongoing India Myanmar Thailand trilateral highway project. In a joint statement issued at the end of Virtual talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the interest to join the India Myanmar Thailand trilateral highway project. And, in the same spirit, India has requested the neighbouring country to allow connectivity from West Bengal (Hilli) to Meghalaya (Mahendraganj) via Bangladesh.

This highway is expected to help greatly in the transport connectivity – 1, 3660 km long cross border highway network and is currently under construction, expected to be completed by 2021.

It will be linking Moreh (India) -Bagan (Myanmar) -Mae Sot (Thailand) and India has agreed to help build two vital road sections — Kalewa-Yagyi of 120 km, and 69 bridges on the Tamu-Kyigone-Kalewa (TKK). From Indian side the work is going on since 2017 and according to sources by 2021 it is expected to be completed. The decision to extend the Trilateral Highway to Lao PDR and Cambodia to help deepen the India-ASEAN Relations was taken at the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit 2012.

To commemorate the historic significance of the road from Mujib Nagar to Nodia on Bangladesh-India border during the Liberation War, the neighbouring country has proposed to name it as “Shadhinota Shorok”.

Also at the one-day virtual summit, India requested for one Land Port with a minimal negative list, beginning with Agartala-Akhaura and for transportation of goods from Chattogram port to the North East of India, it has proposed that its trucks use the Feni Bridge, on completion.

It has been decided that the recently-constituted High Level Monitoring Committee headed by Secretary, Economic Relations Division from Bangladesh and the High Commissioner of India in Dhaka will regularly review the progress of the LOC Projects for their early completion.

India will obliterate bdesh. I am against this. They will use this to flood bd with below par products.

It'll be better if it goes through the regular shillong-Aizawl route. Beautiful roads and nice scenery rather than flat plains with heavy traffic.

Its more for trade and transfer of goods ....And trucks would much rather drive on Flat plain roads /highways than any scenic paths . The tourists can use them and have a nice drive .

Right now this project is important in increasing trade with Thailand/Myanmar and decreasing dependency on sea routes which are much linger and slower .

Bangladesh is already a COASTAL NATION, and it already shares borders with India and Myanmar. BD should focus on expanding trade with the rest of the world.

Anything BD receives from Myanmar can be done via ship. It's right next door. They can make their own internal highways to bring goods to the coastline before putting it on a ship.

What good is it if they are stuck in Dhaka? I mean, they were celebrating the creation of four-lane highways in the country a few months back.

Dhaka elevated expressway is ongoing. Construction of the Ashulia elevated expressway will start soon. On top of that, BBA is now trying to materialize the Dhaka outer ring-road project. Heard about the Dhaka inner circular road project, however, I am not sure about that. If everything is working OK, then after five years, through-through traffic would not need to enter Dhaka.

However, I am not a quite fan of such a project (Cross border project) since we are overburden with the existing traffic. How come we facilitate extra vehicle, I have no idea.

India should talk less about this trivial border road between Indian NE near the MM border. Moreh is in the very east of Indian NE. It is like telling people to build a road south of South Pole, Moreh is so far away.

India should better think how it should appease BD to connect mainland India with its NE and to ASEAN. BD is the only country that can give salvation to virtually landlocked poor India.

It is a benefit as we can bring our troops into Rangoon with ease
