The government has decided to vaccinate the residents of slums, with the dwellers of Korail in Dhaka to receive the first shots under the programme on Tuesday.

The campaign will be expanded to other slums in the capital and elsewhere in Bangladesh, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said at an event in Dhaka on Monday.

Korail is the largest slum in Dhaka with more than 300,000 residents, according to the minister. The government will use the shots from China’s Sinopharm to inoculate them.

The slum dwellers must register first for the vaccine. The registration will be done on the spot by using their national ID card or birth certificate, reports bdnews24.com.

If they cannot bring the documents, they will be registered through “line listing”, said Dr Shamsul Haque, head of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation at the Directorate General of Health Services.

The programme aims to immunise the citizens who missed the vaccination during mass inoculation drives, according to him.

The event was organised to mark the receipt of four freezer vans to transport vaccines from the US.
The health minister said the US pledged a total of 14 freezer vans to transport Pfizer and Moderna vaccines that need to be stored at -70 degrees Celsius.

I am wondering what BD actually thinks would be helped by vaccinating anyone at this stage?

All "vulnerable" have been given their two shots and the virus has already spread through the population and there is strong natural immunity.

Daily infections have dropped 70 times since August and on some days a single death is being registered. "Herd immunity" with the R number well below 1 came into effect at the time as around 10% of people got their two shots and so it is barely anything to do with the vaccine and all about the far more robust and longer lasting natural immunity.

For all intents and purposes this virus is dead and buried in BD and there should only be a cause to worry in the unlikely event that a dangerous new variant arises.

Let's not speak too soon. Virus is able to mutate and form new strains, some of which are vaccine resistant phenotypes.

For example - saw the new yesterday that Austrians are getting infected again from unvaccinated Eastern Europeans, the rate has really gone up.

We have no shortage of irresponsible idiots in the world. But that is good. Natural selection at work. We could do with a lot less of these idiots.

Actually statistically the chance of a dangerous new variant is almost zero. Unlimited spread through 1.4 billion Indian population for a year and we had the Delta variant, which while more virulent, was less lethal than the original virus. The virus can only mutate so much before it can no longer bind to human host cells and then it dies off.

Of course vaccinated Austrians are getting infected as most are still not yet naturally immune - the jab only protects against severe symptoms for “vulnerable” and has little effect on infection and transmission, unlike natural immunity after infection.

In BD the virus is dead and buried due to natural immunity and so pointless and frankly dangerous to be jabbing people who are anyway at almost zero risk of severe risk of hospitalisation from the virus.

While Covid-19 started off as a legitimate risk to a minority of the world’s population, we need to end this with targeted jabbing of those at risk and just forget about doing anything else, as this not the Spanish Flu or The Plague, which were a serious risk to even healthy adults.

Your comments are too irresponsible!!!

234 infections and 4 deaths recorded today in BD and that is the power of naturally immunity.

Vaccines should only be used on "vulnerable" people and no-one else.

Europe is having massive problems with the virus as they are vaccine obsessed.

You are going solely by Bangladesh govt. reported data, which is bound to be under-reported.

Except maybe from private and Western-funded and aligned NGO sources such as ICDDR-B.

Our Govt. has a vested interest in under-reporting, just like Indian Govt. does. Reported govt. data about this from all of South Asia is suspect.

The fact is we don't know.

Maybe we should be depending on more credible data, such as that from Western sources on their populations, which is more credible, and then extrapolate from that.

Of course people in the West genetically are maybe less immune, I don't know.

It's a common trope that people think Bangladeshis have a tougher immune response because they have lived in filth all their lives.

This disease must be eradicated for all time to come.

Even one single life is too precious. Do not please think your own life is more precious than my one because I am a slum-dweller.

Are you aware that highly vaccinated UK is losing over 100 people a day?

Mass vaccination is not the way to defeat this virus.

Does not matter as it is trend we are talking about.

I have relatives in BD and their experience tallies with what BD government is saying. Out of thousands, not a single one of them has ended up in hospital in BD but one has died in this country(UK) and others hospitalised.

Wil finish this by saying that natural immunity has finished the virus in BD and only the 10-15% really "vulnerable" need "boosters" to keep them safe. Mass jabbing is stupid and highly dangerous.

I totally agree. Everybody in BD got the COVID-19 whether they realized or not, BD population already has herd immunity. I believe the same happened in India too.

BD population is no longer "immunoligically naive" to this virus as the bulk of the population has already contracted it and developed T cell/antibodies to it. These defences may potentially last decades as like SARS.

The current 7 day average death toll is 3 which is just statistical noise in a population of 165 million.

Like I already said, BD needs to focus on the around 15% of the "vulnerable" population that make up 95% of potential ICU patients and 99% likely to die to make sure they get their "boosters" on time, in order to keep their immunity levels up and just totally forget as to what is another respiratory virus among lots of others.

If you believe (from the beginning, not only now) that statistics of Bangladesh govt is gospel truth, I'm wondering why others are even engaging in such debate with you, because there is no point of such argument!

Now you are saying that mass vaccination isn't necessary! I'm truly amazed!

In that case do you believe that over 200 a day were dying in August as BD government said?

If not, what was your estimate of the number of daily deaths then and now? Also please provide some evidence for your numbers.

Anyway BD’s numbers are close to both India and Indonesia, similar countries in terms of population and disease profile.

PS - When did I say that vaccination is not necessary for those at risk?

The entire mankind is at risk of Cofid-19. Why do you try to sell your dead horse? No one in the world except that idiot BAL brat @Bengal71 will support your idiotic view.

Stop spreading lies and misinformation all the time.

OK, what is the statistical chance of a healthy 35 year old dying if they caught the virus?

Remember 25% of them will not even catch it due to prior immunity due to exposure to other coronaviruses?

PS - Do not even try to answer this question as I know it is way beyond you.
