Police lobbed tear gas shells on agitating students of East West University at Rampura today.

A tense situation was prevailing, last reported around 12:00noon, with police, apparently teaming up with some stick-wielding youths stood against the students near their campus.

Several canisters of tear gas were lobbed to break the students who had declared to agitate at Rampura in solidarity with countrywide protests today, over demands of safe roads.

The United Nations has expressed concern for the safety of children and young people in the ongoing protests for safe roads in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh.

It has “urgently” called upon all parties to keep everyone – including children and young people – safe on the roads and safe from any kind of violence.

“Students and young people have a legitimate right to speak out on issues of concern to them including road safety issues and to have their opinion heard without the threat of violence,” it said in a statement on Sunday.

“It is a matter of deep concern that a number of young people taking part in demonstrations in the capital have been injured over the last few days. Many schools have been closed as a result of the protests, depriving children of learning opportunities,” it added.

The statement quoted UN Resident Coordinator Mia Seppo as saying, “We are deeply concerned about the reports of violence and call on all for calm. The concerns expressed by youth about road safety are legitimate and a solution is needed for a mega city like Dhaka. A functioning public transport system should ensure the safety of all, including children, young girls and women.”

The UN has long campaigned for better road safety across the world and traffic accidents in Bangladesh are one of the major killers of young people, the world body said.

There are more than 20,000 road fatalities every year in Bangladesh, it added, citing a World Health Organization report.

The students in Bangladesh are protesting for justice and road safety measures after a bus crushed two of their peers to death and injured several others in Dhaka last Sunday.

The protesters clashed with the police, pro-government youths and transporters at different parts of the capital during the weeklong demonstrations.

Journalists covering the demonstrations have also been attacked and injured.

Somebody has to disarm these terrorists in police uniforms!

The protest started after a reckless driving Bus ran over school students and killed 2 on the spot and injured 13 students. The protest has been started by School and College students but now others also joining. It is the result of continuous road accidents by reckless driving vehicles.
People in Bangladesh protested for Payel and the kids who lost in the accident however no one protested against a 9 year old chakma girl who was raped and got a tree branch shoved inside her vagina. Attack on minorities never gets the attention of the media in Bangladesh.

Hopefully the bastereds who who were responsible for that heinous crime will get caught and punished accordingly. But pls don't expect ppl to protest on the street for everything. Let the police do their job.

I don't know what do these protesters want. Even I supported their movement for first 3/4 days. Most of their demands r logical and govt has already accepted them. What's their problem now?

You must be a BD Hindu or Buddhist.

At least 40 hurt as Bashundhara R/A turns battle ground

NSU students come under attack on campus

Star Online Report

Situation in and around Bashundhara Residential Area has turned violent with at least 40 people, mostly students, being injured in clashes as police started throwing tear gas shells and firing rubber bullets targeting students who gathered there protesting attack on their peers.

The clashes briefly came to a halt around 4:10pm as policemen took positions at different points in the area after dispersing the agitating students, reports our correspondent from the spot.

After around 10 minutes, police again began throwing tear gas shells and firing rubber bullets at the students.

Tense situation was prevailing in the area when this report was updated at 4:30pm.

At least 40 injured people, mostly students, were rushed to Apollo Hospital, according to a doctor at the hospital's emergency department. Some passers-by and street children were also among the injured.

It all began after miscreants today swooped on students of North South University (NSU) with sticks and bamboo canes when they were gathering at the back side of the university premises.

The students gathered there to protest against the attack on East West University (EWU) students, a faculty member of NSU told The Daily Star.

“Around 2:00pm, the students started gathering at the back of the NSU premises after they came to know the incident at EWU,” the faculty member said.

Around 30 minutes later, a gang of youths wielding sticks and bamboo canes swooped on the students, the faculty also said.

Several students were seen bleeding and rushing back inside the campus after being injured in the clashes.

In the meantime, sounds of shouts and noises were heard coming from the direction where the students gathered.

After a while, police started throwing over a hundred tear gas shells around 3:30pm targeting the thousands of protesting students from North South University (NSU), Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB) and other nearby universities who gathered in the area.

Armoured cars were stationed in front of the Bashundhara R/A gate and nobody could enter the area.

An armoured car was also seen entering inside the area around 3:40pm, reports our correspondent from the spot.

Police were lobbing tear gas shells indiscriminately towards the students who dispersed into various lanes and alleys in the area.

Students too were throwing brick chips towards police and chanting “Bhua...Bhua (fake…fake)” whenever they could get a chance.

Students were also seen blocking the roads inside Bashundhara R/A by torching tires and taking position with sticks in hand.

They were also expressing their anger saying, “We wouldn't mind if police come but why are they sending their goons?”

Peaceful protests that did not cause disruption are ok.
When the protestors started breaking the law, that is when things started turning bad. AL needs to take out the thuggery from their party but BD as a society is not yet ready for this yet.

AL government has very little chance of falling and being replaced by some unknown party and once this settles down then things will carry on as normal.

Emotion over an unfortunate incident cannot put at risk the economic growth that is happening in BD.
Yes dear things will carry on as normal. WHat a SHAME That AL GOVT Is breaking law itself by using PRIVATE CHATRA League militia against protesting school kids. shame
