Dhaka, Jan 19 (bdnews24.com) — Trading at the country's two bourses will resume on Thursday as usual.
The public relations department of Dhaka Stock Exchange told bdnews24.com on Wednesday that trading at the DSE would start at 11am and follow the normal trading schedule.
It said the trading at the bourse in Chittagong would also resume at the same time.
Earlier, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) imposed a circuit breaker on the general price index, aiming to eliminate the chances of capital market's too much of sliding or abnormal gaining.
The capital market circuit breaker went into action on the first day around 2:30pm as the prime bourse's general index crossed its fall limit of 225 points, triggering the automatic trade shutoff.
Chittagong Stock Exchange also followed suit as directed by the SEC.
The shutdown prompted the retail investors to take to the streets in downtown Dhaka, disrupting traffic in front of the Dhaka Stock Exchange.
Earlier in the day, the regulator decided to suspend trading at the country's prime bourse if there was a fluctuation of more than 225 points in Dhaka's general index.
"This is a period of transition for the country's capital market," Satiate Mitre, the DSE chief executive officer, told a hastily arranged press briefing.
"I urge the investors not to sell good shares fearing further fall in the market."
He told journalists that they were planning to revise circuit breaker on price index on quarterly basis.
The angry small investors also set fire to piles of boxes and papers and surrounded the building that houses the Securities and Exchange Commission, shouting anti-government slogans.
Trading at Dhaka and Chittagong bourses had resumed at 1pm instead of 11am on Wednesday.
Earlier, a meeting was held at the residence of finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith. The governor and deputy governor of the Bangladesh Bank, chairman and two members of the commission were present at the two-hour meeting which ended around 11am.
On Tuesday, trading both at the Dhaka and Chittagong stock exchanges was stopped almost an hour and a half ahead of the scheduled closing time as the market shed about 240 points.
