Bangladesh navy apprehends 26 fishermen from Tamil Nadu - The Times of India
KANYAKUMARI: Twenty six fishermen from Thoothoor area in the western coast of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and their three fishing boats were apprehended by Bangladesh navy about 80 nautical miles off Kolkata coast on Tuesday.
Fishermen in the coastal village received information after one of the boats in vicinity alerted them.
The fishermen of Thoothoor panchayat are involved in deep sea fishing and they venture into the sea from fishing harbours across the country.
Four boats set sail from Bettuagad near Kolkatta on November 17, fishermen sources in the village said.
The boats were rounded up by the Bangladesh navy in the Bay of Bengal around 2am on December 9.
Fishermen claimed that they were very much in Indian waters when they detained. Three boats -- Ave Maria, Sea Mary and Annai -- belonging to B Seba and Rajan from Thoothoor and Selvam from Chinnadurai were detained, said P Justin Antony of the Tamil Nadu Fishermen Development Trust (TNFIDET) in Kanyakumari.
Talking to TOI over phone from Thoothoor, Seba, the owner of one of the detained boats, said they had received information after one of four boats managed to give a slip to the Bangladesh navy and informed boat owners after sailing closer to shore where they could get mobile phone connectivity.
"From what our crew members said, our boats were very much in the Indian waters but the Bangladesh navy forcefully have taken our boats. Our crew members were desperately trying to reach out to the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard through wireless in all 16 lines but no one picked," he rued.
They have been fishing in the region for the last four years without any trouble. Three days ago, an Indian Navy helicopter intercepted them and navy personnel assured them that they could fish there, he said.
"In fact we were sailing towards deep sea and did not even start fishing when the Bangladesh navy apprehended our fishing boats," Seba said.
"It is sad that our naval agencies did not respond to distress call of our fishermen. The Indian government should take immediate measures ensuring release of our fishermen and their boats," stressed Justin Antony.
Sri Lankan navy apprehends 43 Indian fishermen - The Times of India
RAMESWARAM: The Sri Lankan navy on Tuesday evening apprehended 43 fishermen who ventured into the sea from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu and Karaikal in the Union territory of Puducherry.
The navy also detained their five boats, according to fishermen sources.
Fishermen sources in Rameswaram received information that the fishermen were apprehended by the Sri Lankan navy near Neduntheevu in the Palk Bay and were being taken to Kangesanthurai naval base in Sri Lanka.
Among the detained, 28 fishermen on three boats hailed from Karaikal while 15 fishermen on two boats were from Nagapattinam area, said U Arulanandam of Alliance for Release of Innocent Fishermen at Pamban.
"It appears that they were apprehended in the evening and being taken to Sri Lanka by their navy. We may get to know the details by Wednesday morning", he said.
At present, 38 fishermen from Rameswaram, Nagapattinam and Jegathapattinam are lodged in Sri Lankan jails and 82 boats are in the custody of the authorities there.
With the latest episode, the count of fishermen and boats in Sri Lankan custody has gone up to 81 and 87 respectively.
