Bangladesh has sent fine quality rice (developed by Bangladeshi scientists named Banglamati), seasonal fruits and fresh vegetables to the United Arab Emirates by a cargo flight of Etihad Airlines as gifts.

The gifts were made as a gesture of goodwill and fraternity between Bangladesh and the UAE, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday.

The gifts include Banglamati rice, fresh watermelon, pineapple, Okra, potato, pointed gourd, cucumber etc.

Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) provided Banglamati rice and the Ministry of Agriculture arranged fresh vegetables under the guidance of Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaq.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen mentioned Bangladesh's remarkable progress in the agriculture sector with surplus food production during his meeting with Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the UAE in January 2020.

On a separate occasion, the chairman of the UAE Investment Authority Sheikh Hamadbin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed his willingness to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to import rice from Bangladesh during his courtesy call in Abu Dhabi in January 2020.

The gifts were primarily made from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the President, the Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, the Foreign Minister, the Minister of Human Resources and the Minister of State for Food Security of the United Arab Emirates.

The government is trying to explore overseas markets for surplus agro-products of Bangladesh, especially the seasonal fruits, fresh vegetables and meat.

The UAE authority has procured around 40 tons of fresh vegetables and meat and carried them in the same cargo flight.

This might be a good start of exporting quality rice, fruits, vegetables and meat to the UAE, said the MoFA.

What is Banglamati rice??

. . . .
What is Banglamati rice??

Banglamati/moti = বাংলামতি = Bengali Gem (I guess that's the correct translation though "Mati/Moti/মতি" has other meanings too). An aromatic rice also known as BRRI 50 as it's invented by BRRI. It's almost like Bashmati and equal to Indian/Pakistani "Bashmati". Asked my father, he disagrees.

But due to international patent law it can't be called "Bashmati". You can get more yield from "Banglamati" (2986-2612 kg per acre) than "Bashmati" (1493-1120 kg per acre). Didn't find so many details in English and hard to find anything govt site isn't that helpful. Only thing i found is this Wiki article in Bengali. Since i saw BD flag in your profile before, hope you can read it. :-)

@Bilal9 @Homo Sapiens if you can add more to it then TIA.

Biryani is best with Kalijira and Chinigura rice.
Pulao, prefer longer grains for birriyani

Nice so I found the rice I can eat in bd then? As I heard basmati is kinda expensive in bd?

. .
Sela Basmati rice by Aahu Barah is the best for Biryani. Finest Basmati on earth.

Some Basmati sold in the UK/EU/US is hardly genuine Basmati with the deserved aroma and texture ('Bas' means smell or aroma in Sanskrit, like Su-'bas' or Good Smell, Basmati means aromatic).

Some Basmati products are mixed in as expected with other cheaper long grained varieties and some sold as 'Basmati' are 100% fake. Real Basmati is very expensive, and like the above video shows, Banglamati is also quite expensive compared to other varieties in Bangladesh. Though Kalijira and Chinigura micro-grained varieties are expensive as well.

When shopping for Basmati - be careful and take an older person (dad/uncle) who is actually aware of what Real Basmati looks and smells like. Real Basmati comes from Punjab and Uttarakhand region and is cultivated in well-drained soil in the foothills of the Himalayas with non-tropical non-humid weather. That growth environment imparts qualities, which are not duplicated in rice grown in lowland environments (like 'Banglamati').

'Banglamati' is rather long-grained but in the aroma dept., will not match real Basmati. You can save face for your Biryani though with copious amounts of ghee and other aromatic spices.
