Bangladesh police fire tear gas at protesters - Central & South Asia - Al Jazeera English

Police in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, have fired tear gas to disperse thousands of supporters of Islamic parties protesting against a war crimes trial linked to the country's 1971 independence war.

Parts of central Dhaka turned into a battlefield as protesters attacked police with bricks and sticks in front of the national mosque after Friday prayers.

The security forces responded with hundreds of rounds of rubber bullets and tear gas shells, according to witnesses.

Police tried to thwart the protest by locking the gates of the Baitul Mukarram mosque where thousands of people were performing their weekly prayers, an AFP photographer at the scene said.

At least one person has been killed and more than 100 injured, including policemen and journalists, after protesters pelted stones and tried to overrun police barricades, the Dhaka-based English newspaper, the Daily Star, reported.

Fierce clashes also occurred in the port city of Chittagong, the northern city of Bogra and dozens of other cities and towns where police fired rubber bullets at thousands of protesters, leaving scores injured, police and local media said.

Sayeed Khan, an emergency doctor at Dhaka medical college hospital, told AFP that up to 50 people had been admitted, most injured by rubber bullets.

"Several cases are very critical," he said.

Twelve Islamic parties called the protests after the weekly prayers in nearly half a million mosques nationwide, demanding punishment to pro-government protest organisations for their alleged anti-Islamic blogs.

'Politically motivated'

Earlier this month, a special tribunal convicted senior party leader, Abdul Quader Mollah, of mass killings during the war and sentenced him to life in prison.

Another eight leaders of the party are on trial on charges of atrocities during the nine-month war against Pakistan.

Mollah's life sentence was seen by many in the country as lenient, which triggered a mass protest.

In its first verdict last month, the tribunal sentenced a former Jamaat-e-Islami leader, Abul Kamal Azad, to death in absentia for similar offences.

Tens of thousands of people came out on the streets across the country calling for the death penalty for convicted war criminals, including Mollah.

They have since been camping at Shahbagh in the centre of Dhaka to press for their demands.

Members of Jamaat-e-Islami say the war tribunal verdicts were politically motivated and have sought for the trials be held under the auspices of the UN.

Bangladesh's parliament, meeting the demands of protesters, this week amended a law allowing the state to appeal any verdict in war crimes trials it deemed inadequate and out of step with public opinion.

Fascists like you kidnap witnesses, instruct the court to get the kind of verdict they want, pay thugs to foil the protests of the oppositions, release convicted murderers so that they can kill more people of the opposition, murder people in broad day light and then talk about crimes against humanity.

@ Where we are moving ? Are we moving towards "Cassendra Crossing" ?

@ I find almost every weak 4/5 persons are being killed intentionally by the Govt forces. If it continue then it is not a good sign ! If the situation continues like this some other organised force might take over !!! This is what the past experience shows. Moreso, there is a saying that "History repeat itself ".

@ Does Awami Leaque thinks that in this way they will kill the innocent people and they will remain in power ??? And their so called master will come to rescue them. My dear friends the things are not that easy.

Four killed in Bangladesh clashes over 'atheist bloggers' - The Times of India

DHAKA: Bangladesh police fired live rounds on Friday in fierce clashes with Islamists demanding the execution of bloggers they accuse of blasphemy, killing at least four people and injuring about 200.

Two people were shot dead by police in the northwestern town of Palashbari, and two others died elsewhere, police told AFP.

Parts of the capital Dhaka were turned into a battlefield as thousands of protesters attacked police with bricks and sticks in front of the national mosque. Officers there retaliated with rubber bullets and tear gas.

The country's 12 Islamic parties called the protests after Friday prayers in nearly half a million mosques nationwide, demanding the execution of bloggers whom they say blasphemed Islam and the Prophet Mohammed.

Tensions have risen in the Muslim-majority nation over allegedly anti-Islamic blog posts by Ahmed Rajib Haider, who was hacked to death last week near his home in Dhaka.

In recent weeks Haider and fellow bloggers had launched huge protests demanding a ban on the largest Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami, and the execution of its leaders for alleged war crimes in the 1971 independence conflict with Pakistan.

Since Haider's death, Bangladeshi social media has been flooded with his alleged blog posts and with those by other bloggers mocking Islam, triggering protests by a number of Islamic groups and clerics.

At Palashbari at least 4,000 Islamists attacked police with home-made bombs and sticks, prompting officers to respond with live fire, district police chief Nahidul Islam told AFP.

A dozen people were injured including five policemen, Islam added.

In the northeastern city of Sylhet a young man died as police shot rubber bullets and tear gas after protesters went on a rampage, attacking and torching vehicles, Sylhet metropolitan police commissioner Nibas Chandra Majhi told AFP.

Uzzal Dutta, an emergency doctor at the city Hospital, said 31 people were admitted and most had injuries from rubber bullets.

One person was killed in the western district of Jhenidah.

Police said clashes also broke out in the port city of Chittagong, the northern city of Bogra where 15,000 protesters attacked law-enforcers, and dozens of other cities and towns where police fired rubber bullets and tear gas.

About 200 people were injured nationwide, police and doctors said.

In Dhaka violence broke out outside the Baitul Mukarram national mosque, where protesters also attacked around a dozen journalists.

Police tried to thwart the protest by locking the gates of the mosque where tens of thousands of people were performing their weekly Jumma prayers, an AFP photographer at the scene said.

Sayeed Khan, an emergency doctor at Dhaka medical college hospital, told AFP that up to 50 people had been admitted, most with injuries from rubber bullets.

"Several cases are very critical," he said.

The government has warned of tough steps against those who incite social tension, and urged newspapers and blogs not to publish defamatory writings against the Prophet Mohammed.

It has cracked down on anti-Islam blogs and also given police protection to some bloggers in the wake of Haider's murder.

Police have yet to comment on a motive for Haider's killing. However, his brother said Haider was targeted by Jamaat's student wing for his online activities.

The killing of Haider was the second attack in Dhaka in less than a month against a blogger critical of Islamist groups.

Deadly Bangladesh clashes over bloggers - Channel NewsAsia

DHAKA: Bangladesh police fired tear gas and rubber bullets Friday in fierce clashes with Islamists demanding the execution of bloggers they accused of blasphemy, killing one person and injuring around 100.

The security forces responded with hundreds of rounds of rubber bullets and tear gas shells, according to witnesses.

The country's 12 Islamic parties called the protests after the weekly prayers in nearly half a million mosques nationwide, demanding the execution of bloggers they say were behind blasphemous writings against Islam and Prophet Mohammed.

One person was killed during the clashes in western district of Jhenidah, district police chief Altaf Hossain told AFP, adding that hundreds of protesters also clashed with ruling party activists.

"The person, most probably a supporter of an Islamic party, died on the way to hospital," he said.

Fierce clashes also occurred in the port city of Chittagong, the northern city of Bogra and dozens of other cities and towns where police fired rubber bullets at thousands of protesters, leaving scores injured, police and local media said.

They know better than to display emotions by burning national flag at the wrong time. But there will always be some people who are eager to believe such news. BAL media knows that well.

They all are like-minded, thus, they did not say anything to Shibir if the incident is true. IMO.

Now you can think why, why they are hating BD/flag, on the other hand, why Shabagh mobs + many Hindus are loving BD so much all of a sudden? (lol, desher jonno jaan deye dibo ai Shabag theke, Shabagh Square = Tahir Square)

I think sometimes, Mayer cheye mashir darad beshi.

Because,

Ideology > Nation to Jammat.

Again Ideology > Nation to Shabagh Mob/AL/communists

But the media and nation (govt.) are only taking the side of Shabagh Mob/AL/communists shamelessly, undemocratically and unduly, therefore, Ideology is grater than Nation is not obvious for Shabagh Mob/AL/communists, but they are also harming this country by dividing the Nation using their ideology. And by not ensuring the democratic aspirations/rights of opposites.

On the other, Ideology is grater than Nation is so obvious for Jammat, so they are traitor, evil.

This ideology based politics/system should be removed. Or the fascism of AL must be dealt with, otherwise, many more flags could be fired, if democracy is not ensured for everyone equally.

If they did it then they should be respectfully kicked out of the country. Atleast that is what they deserve
