That's certainly one of the primary reasons,
as Taka has started gain a bit (although quite infsignificant)
expatriates has started to send money, taking advantage
of the situation.

Bangladesh sent 63608 workers abroad this January alone which is higher then the previous 2 years.

A total of 50,632 workers went abroad in January 2009, while during the same period, the number is 33,847 in 2010 and 32,924 in 2011.

Then come to question how many workers specially from Saudi Arabia returned?

What was the net growth (workers went out - workers came back) of manpoer export last year?

How much of that increase beacuse people send back their savings because of falling value of taka?

Drop in manpower export is alarming

A little over 300,000 Bangladeshi workers found overseas jobs in 2010, according to a reliable estimate. But in 2008, some 875,000 workers from Bangladesh went abroad with jobs. Thus, from these figures alone one may have an idea of the big plunge in manpower exports -- by over 60 per cent -- in only about two years and the adverse consequences of the same for the Bangladesh economy.

The above figures are certainly a wake up call for those who should be concerned in Bangladesh. Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina visited Saudi Arabia in 2009 and also other oil-rich kingdoms in the same region. It was publicised prominently after her Saudi visit that the same had unlocked the way to full-fledged resumption of the flow of Bangladeshi manpower to that country.

But that information, unfortunately, has proved to be untenable. The same apply in relation to other Arab countries that employ Bangladeshi workers. It was prominently made known after the PM's visit that Saudi Arabia would allow Bangladeshi workers to take up new jobs in that kingdom following termination of contracts in existing jobs. But that has not yet happened.

The Manpower Minister's statement that decreasing manpower demand in these countries is the reason for the drop in our manpower export is not tenable. Our neighbouring countries, India and Nepal, are rapidly and largely increasing their manpower export to Saudi Arabia and nearby countries.

Are you aware that Saudi Arabia has stopped hiring from Bangladesh, many suspect because of the death of Saudi diplomat and the investigation having no headway after many months to find the culprit? There has been allegations that RAW trained RAWami death squad did this job at India's instruction, so Indians get more jobs there instead. Similar thing is happening with our relations with Libya. So yes the workers will go from South Asia all right, but not from Bangladesh due to excellent performance of RAWami League following excellent instructions from South Block.

Epic fail.... Just ignoring how much workers went abroad in 2011 n showing an old data does not hold any credibility. From 2010-2011 workers went abroad increased by 60-70%. Cleverly either you or the article ignored.

. Although manpower export had gone down worryingly in the last few years, a total of 5,65,000 workers went abroad last year.

BMET statistics show that a total of 475,278 workers went abroad for jobs in 2009 and 3,90,702 in 2010.

The drop of sending workers was mainly related to recession not any governments fault.

N drop of workers to Saudi Arabia was the result of crime rate not the other way around. Selection of corrupt recruiting agency's during BNP government was the primary reason for this increase of crime rate. As they said higher salary during recruitment after going to the destination they have found either the working visa is fake or recruiter is giving much lower salary then earlier agreed.

For your info in the last 5-6 years remitance earning almost doubled.

The other thing do you think it is justifiable to give low wage (as low as 200 dirham only) by a big chunk of saudi employer after recruiting people with promise to give much higher salary???

Well as a Saudi I only wants the culprits to be brought to Justice. Saudi Diplomats are being targeted all over the world. From Yemen to African nations (but gladly those hits were failures) to South Asia to South East Asia.


I just want our diplomats and citizens to feel safe and not feel the need to wear a bullet proof vest at all times in every country. And the only way this can happen is by speedy delivery of Justice by host nations... Unfortunately the way I see it Bangladeshi government have failed so far to deliver, We even sent our own investigation team but Bangladesh refused to co-operate with them.


Well about what is fair or not it is all about contracts which wages in there are specified. Local recruiting agencies maybe giving false promises etc. but in KSA breaking of contract is a serious offense.

In the government jobs it is 3000 RS. But the government only rarely hires non-Saudis and at that it is for specialized areas which need a certain level of education and skill which may not be present in the Unemployed Saudis applying for that job.

In the Private sector, private companies have their own rings of bribery, blackmail and all sorts of dirty sleazy tactics to get the government ministries responsible for laws to sway in their favor. For example there are many Unemployed Saudis who have all the necessary Educations and Skills to penetrate the private sector completely, however in private companies logic it is more in line of "Why hire a Saudi with a 10,000RS wage when I can hire a foreigner for 5,000RS or even 3,000 RS?". This discrimination have led Saudis to say the popular saying "We are foreigners in our own damn country" which for a while until many of those laws changed due to Arab spring many Saudis didn't like foreigners very much. Which is also why most Saudis would take jobs in the Public sector over the Private one because many think of it as "Fair".

Just like you we do have our set of problems with corruption etc. but I have faith that the new laws will decrease this phenomenon.

I agree with you completely. This low wage is unacceptable and inhumane. But we are talking about the corrupt and sleazy Private companies here who do the hiring as I pointed out earlier. They are greedy to the Maximum and they do not only damage foreign workers but they also damage Saudi citizens equally. Many of our unemployed are educated and have college degrees etc. but they don't hire them because they will demand higher salaries than their equally educated foreign counterparts.

In fact those private companies are the ones responsible for spreading the myth of "Saudis are unskilled and uneducated and can not be used in the work force" which can't be further from the truth, only so they can save money on wages.

What I am saying is, it is in General the Saudi government's fault first and foremost for failing to meet the needs of both Saudi and Expat communities in KSA due to corruption, laws can be changed to be more fair for all but a couple of hundred thousands under the table here and there can get you whatever law that you want to maximize profit.
