Bangladesh reels from the worst flooding in nearly 20 years

Yes Bangaldesh is gaining so much land. It will double in size in next few years :woot:
Flood actually elevate land a few milimeter as fine slit cover the land once water recedes. The river silt which get deposited in the estuary causes land mass gradually to enlarge in the coastal region. This is how the entire southern region of Bangladesh was formed over many thousands of years. This process is still continuing and coastal areas are expanding by an average 20 sq. km per year. To learn this process more thoroughly you can study about how deltas are formed.
I am not I am responding the claims certain bengali members have been making in other threads that BD is gaining land.
Of course Bangladesh is gaining land. Just because Sylhet region is experiencing heavy flood does not refute this truth. Land expansion is happening in the southern coastal region while flood is happening in the northeastern side of Bangladesh. These two areas are separated by a few hundred kilometers.

.
Bangladesh can afford to take debt and start hiring Dutch, Japanese or Chinese companies to work on this. This is a matter of Bangladesh's national security. Why are Bangladeshi leaders taking this matter lightly?

If you actually bothered to take some basic research then life would look brighter all around.

"The Dutch officials may be informed that BDP 2100 Investment Plan (IP) consists of a total of 80 projects: 65 are physical projects, and 15 are institutional and knowledge development projects at the first phase up to 2030. Its total capital investment cost is BDT 2,978 billion (US$37 billion)"

.
Bangladesh is also 5 time bigger that the Netherlands with a bigger coast line so its going to be extra tough
Bangladesh actually does not have a long coastline. It's coastline is just 580 km compared to The Netherlands 451 km. Three sides of Bangladesh is bounded by landmass, only the south is open to the sea.
it takes a government with vision and long term planning to achieve what the Dutch have done
does Bangladesh have it I don't know
Bangladesh actually does not need to do what Dutch had done because nature in our case is doing that. The Dutch actually do not get much of river silt as Rhine is not a big river and it's sedimentation load is much lower. So they had no option but to go for geo-engineering and reclaim land from sea.

On the other land, world's third largest river system Ganges-Brahmaputra passes through Bangladesh carrying billions of ton river silt every year. The source of these silt is the Himalayas and upstearm mountainous areas of India, Nepal, Bhutan and China. This billions of ton river silt is being continuously deposited in the coastal region of Bangladesh because Ganges-Brahmaputra estuary lies there. This deposition is elevating coastline of Bangladesh by a few milimeter every year and expanding coastal land mass by 20 square km per year. This is how World's largest delta formed in the southern side of Bangladesh. Since 1973, Bangladesh gained 1000 sq. km of land by this process.

Bangladesh gaining 20 sq-km land a year

Coastal water in the Ganges-Brahmaputra estuary of Bangladesh is very shallow and a lot of islands are forming due to this river silt accretion. Look at this island named 'Bhasan Char' where Bangladesh relocated one hundred thousand Rohingya refugees. This island did not exist 30 years ago. It gradually formed by silt accretion and now it has enlarged enough to make home for so many refugees.

The gains made by silt deposition will be far outweighed by general sea-level rise

Bangladesh would suffer the worst from climate change unfortunately
Maybe true but this flood in our east was caused by Indian dams and and their sudden release of water that they do every year

.
Not good, may people in Bangladesh remain safe .
I was thinking if assam is flooded right now , so bangladesh too must be experiencing some sort of flood like situation

It is unclear on how much sea level will rise. Different study and different time produce different results. And there are also lower estimates and upper estimates, 5% probability, 95% probablitily etc. etc. So we can not predict for sure that sea level rise will certainly exceed silt deposition in Bangladesh. If the World mostly able to abide by Paris climate agreement signed in 2015, then temperature will rise to a moderate level and coastline would not face much danger. but if the countries fail to do so, then temperature may rise to 4-6 degree celcius and sea level may rise rapidly upto 2 meters by 2100AD. In that case we have to build Dutch style dike, sea wall etc to protect our coastline.

But most importantly, temperature rise of such magnitude will cause much more harm than just sea level rise. Large part of Africa, India, Middle East and other arid regions will become too hot for human habitation. All the deserts of the world will expand massively ruining agricultural land and water availability. Vast part of India and Pakistan already experiencing temperature which is testing the human endurance, In the last few days we have seen Delhi having 48 degree celcius, many parts of central and Western India experienced temp. above 50 degree celcius! Can you imagine what will happen if global average rise by another 4 degree celcius? It will be a massive killer (Current Global average temperature is 14 degree celsius). Problems from Sea level rise will be pale in comparison. But for some unknown reason, many Indians and Pakistanis thinks, only Bangladesh will suffer from climate change while they will be spared, so they engaged in trolling.

So you are now linking flood with sea level rise, such intellect in display. Do you understand what you say or just say stuff because you have to post something. This flood happed on our north east the area that is furthest away from our shores and this happend because india opened their dams suddenly as they are also flooded.

Bangladesh have floods every year, it has been happenings for centruries. Now please if you see fllod next time in Bangladesh dont relate to sea level rise. That is a different problem.

Just to stimulate your latent intellect please read the below article. Its also from western media not our propaganda.

Because they are more concerned with looting public money than building the much needed disaster management infrastructure.

Parts of India and Pakistan could become too hot for people to survive, warns scientist

Insallah if not double at least half and that with the floods you mentioned which will bring the sediment, thanks for encouragement

They are a joke, they saw flood water and the first thing that came to their mind was rising sea level. I do not like to name or shame people but its hard to not bash idiotic comments like this. Its like saying, because I saw taleban in pakistani tv so that means taleban is running pakistani government, logic went on a holiday for some ******,

Kuch bhi!!!

Do not please talk stupid things. BD is certainly gaining new lands in the BoB, vast land areas.

Flood is different. The water is coming down from the highland of Assam that no human technology can prevent. This year, Cherapunji in Assam had the highest rainfall on record.

All must be because of environmental degradation due to the carbon overproduction in the coal-fired power stations mostly in India and China. The entire world is suffering from this pollution.

Germany and Denmark are also suffering from overflooding. BD is poor and its people are used to yearly flooding but not in Germany and Denmark. People accustomed to living a high-quality life in these two countries are suffering more than we are.

I am fully aware if Bajwa and his treachery. He will be dealt with IA
BD is certainly gaining lands in the BoB, already 33,000 sq. km. But, this thread is about overflooding of lands in the northeast. Water is coming down from Assam that BD cannot stop.
