Bangladesh ranks 88th out of 117 qualifying countries on the latest Global Hunger Index, much ahead of India.

Bangladesh reduced hunger significantly, but with a score of 25.8, the country still suffers from a level of hunger that is serious, according to the 2019 report. Its previous score was 30.3 in 2010.

A high GHI score can be evidence of a lack of food, a poor-quality diet, inadequate child care-giving practices, an unhealthy environment, or all of these factors. The GHI ranks countries on a 100-point scale, with 0 being the best score (which means no hunger) and 100 the worst.

Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe that share a mission to eradicate hunger jointly produce the GHI every year to track hunger levels around the world.

Because of its large population, India’s GHI indicator values have an outsized impact on the indicator values for the region, according to the report.

India’s child wasting rate is extremely high at 20.8 percent, the highest wasting rate of any country in this report for which data or estimates were available.

Outside India, two countries in South Asia have made significant advances in child nutrition, and their experiences are instructive, the report said.

A 2015 study sought to identify the reasons behind the decline in stunting in Bangladesh at the national level from 58.5 percent in 1997 to 40.2 percent in 2011.

The study attributed the decrease primarily to rising household wealth associated with pro-poor economic growth and gains in parental education, as well as health, sanitation, and demographic factors reflecting decreased fertility rates.

The authors conclude that success in this area can be achieved with robust economic growth and attention to “nutrition-sensitive” sectors such as education, sanitation, and health.

Nepal’s remarkable reduction in child stunting from 56.6 percent in 2001 to 40.1 percent in 2011 is associated with, and likely attributable to, increased household assets (a proxy for household wealth), increased maternal education, improved sanitation, and implementation and use of health and nutrition programmes.

India At 102 In Hunger Index Of 117 Nations, Below Pak, Nepal, Bangladesh

All India Reported by Vishnu Som, Edited by Debanish Achom

India slips in Global Hunger Index: The index was calculated on four parameters

New Delhi:
India is behind its neighbours Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh in a list of 117 countries that tracks hunger and malnutrition, according to a report released by two international non-profits that work for humanitarian aid.

The Global Hunger Index or GHI scores countries on a 100-point "severity scale", where zero is the best score (no hunger) and 100 is the worst. "With a score of 30.3, India suffers from a level of hunger that is serious," the report says.

India fell from 55 in 2014 to 102 in 2019 in the GHI. However, the number of countries has differed from year to year. India ranked 55 out of 76 nations in 2014, 100 out of 119 countries in 2017, and 103 out of 119 countries in 2018. This year's report calculated the index from a sample of 117 nations and India came on 102.

The GHI is a peer-reviewed annual report, jointly published by Ireland's Concern Worldwide and Germany's Welthungerhilfe.

Pakistan is at 94, Bangladesh 88 and Nepal 73 in this year's GHI report that the authors say is designed to comprehensively measure and track hunger at the global, regional, and national levels.

The indicators included in the GHI formula reflect caloric deficiencies as well as poor nutrition

"Because of its large population, India's Global Hunger Index indicator values have an outsized impact on the indicator values for the region... India's child wasting rate is extremely high at 20.8 per cent - the highest wasting rate of any country in this report for which data or estimates were available," the GHI report says.

The index was calculated on four parameters: undernourishment; child wasting, or the share of children under five years who have a low weight for their age; child stunting, or the share of children under five years who have a low height for their age, and child mortality rate under five years.

"Using this combination of indicators to measure hunger offers several advantages. The indicators included in the GHI formula reflect caloric deficiencies as well as poor nutrition. The undernourishment indicator captures the nutrition situation of the population as a whole, while the indicators specific to children reflect the nutrition status within a particularly vulnerable subset of the population..." the GHI report says.

The leaders of the opposition parties referred to the GHI report to criticise Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the centre.

"2019 Global Hunger Index is out. India further slips down in rank to 102. The slide started with PM Modi's ascension. In 2014 India was ranked 55. In 2017 it slipped to 100 and in now to the levels of Niger and Sierra Leone. The majority of worlds hungry now resides in India," Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Isaac tweeted.

"According to 2019 Global Hunger Index, India has slipped to 102 out of 117 countries. The report says that India has 'Serious' hunger levels & yet many believe 'Acche Din Aayega'. The question is when? Is it when all, except the Cronies, die of hunger?" former Karnataka chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Where are the Sanghi trolls now?

India the Land of Milk and Honey?

Bangladeshi Termites to steal Indian riches?

Bolo - Sab Jhoot hai....

Modi-ji kaha - all Kang-ressy propaganda....
Can you imagine these ppl love to send failed rocket mission but cant feed there own ppl and refuse to build toilets. Always saying crap about pakistan and bd for no reason.

Pffft.. All of South Asia are at the bottom of the barrel yet some people here are trying to score brownie points.. Pathetic

Its especially kind of ironic given BD has nothing like the NFHS of India (the institutional improvement of which over time leads to more accurate data in India's case) to even gather an adequate survey in first place.

In fact BD systematically has destroyed any large scale (esp independent) survey sampling within its borders...because they were giving terrible numbers in the 90s and 2000s....so they (eg hellen keller international survey) were simply done away with (quietly)....just like the kangaroo court stuff they do now: https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/repo...ality-credibility.525379/page-2#post-10481823

The more you dig, the more you find there....because after all its quite easy to see where BD ranks in corruption and freedom indices, even compared to regional average.

Thus they are rooted in the lie complex to found their own country in first place, a unique complex in the region....and expect any number they put out from "internal govt surveys" to pass any actual final muster.

Its why in the end its lot better simply to judge from purely 3rd party data analysis....i.e vetted information involving a credible party physically outside the country. Once you do that, BD does atrociously as expected....correlating much better with the overall socioeconomic data of people they export.

Can you imagine these ppl love to send failed rocket mission but cant feed there own ppl and refuse to build toilets. Always saying crap about pakistan and bd for no reason.

BD takes the cake for inflating a certain 3 million number just to found and justify itself. Anything you say about yourself internally, be it toilets, hunger, literacy or whatever else....is simply not credible in the end....compared to far less corrupt and far more institutionally developed countries.

Especially when you look at certain STARK data artefacts appearing even in UNICEF (i.e BD own survey data), that show why is hand washing and soap use in BD so much drastically lower (like 1 out of ever 3 ppl only) if it has 99% toilet coverage?:

BD govt just goes for a big propaganda drive program, gets a few NGOs on board to promote the paraphernalia regarding that....achieves the results on paper (only)....and then have its emotional plebs start and defecate all over their own threads here....which attacts their more numerous one-liner troll posse like flies to crap.

All the while it leaves a wake of dissonance if one simply actually looks beyond this crap and the crap attitude it perpetuates among the riffraff.

I am trying to understand how come india has hunger issue despite being one of the largest agricultural producer? It dont make sense. Is it cause indian government export too much instead of feeding its poor? Or is it supply chain management problems? Like too much waste maybe or one area has too much production but other area isnt. If it was some sub saharan African country will make sense since they have water problem also other issues. But how come india? Just curious...some one should do research on this issue.
