True, Subsidy is a very bad economic policy. Specially for Bangladesh whose tax revenue is very less. Instead other targeted pro-poor policy should be implemented which will increase their income to tackle the higher cost of fuel and foods. Subsidy subsidize poor and rich alike. Rich people should not be subsidized.

Increasing price was a wrong decision specially increasing the price of diesel! All public transportation, goods transportation are dependent on diesel! So subsidy for only diesel would be the wise choice!

Increasing petrol , octane price maybe no big deal as few people have cars! However many people have motorcycles , but they can ditch it if necessary!

But diesel issue should be considered seriously!

Increasing diesel price will increase food price as well; lots of water pumps for irrigation run on diesel, and tractors also run on diesel!

This govt messed up COVID 19 management by taking a decision in the morning , and changing it literally in the afternoon, surely you remember it!

However during Ershad , diesel price became 18 tk from 9 taka so fast ( maybe overnight, can't remember as I was 6/7 years old that time) , and later after fall of Ershad, it was down!

Not expecting the govt fall though , but constructive criticism is my right as citizens , but unfortunately AL doesn't want it!

I dont think IMF ever suggest any country to depreciate their currency, what happen with Pakistan currency depreciation is due to market pressure, the same thing also happen in many countries as well due to high energy and commodity prices + Federal Reserve (The Fed) tightening policy. Indian Rupee, for example, has depreciated around 7 % this year despite big intervention from Indian central bank in open market.

But IMF could suggest Taka to be floated instead of being pegged to release pressure and it of course could lead to more depreciation of Taka in this global situation.

Two contradictory sentences in the same response. Floating will mean depreciation for most developing countries when Feds increase the rate.

IMF will ask borrowers to give more autonomy to the Central Bank. This will invariably result in depreciation as the central bank will float the currency.

But will Hasina agree on it? It will destroy her credibility! So IMHO, Hasina should get a safe exit ( I think she wants it too) ,and then a technocrat ( like Fakhruddin)govt will take the power! And it's the only way of safe and honorable exit for Hasina!

As I don't want to see BNP ruling Bangladesh again! So a national unity govt , with a technocrat head of state should be the right choice!
