Bangladesh has provided a grant of Tk 65 crore to reduce the international debt burden of the indebted and poor African country Sudan. Bangladesh provided the grant at the request of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

On Tuesday, Bangladesh donated 53 lakh 20 thousand SDRs (IMF currency) to the IMF. The finance ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.

In response to the IMF's call, the debt-ridden poor country of Sudan, a heavily indebted state and a member of the OIC, had a debt waiver of 5.32 million SDRs, about 65 crore Bangladeshi Taka. The government hopes that this funding from the Bangladesh government as ‘debt relief’ will further strengthen Sudan’s struggle to alleviate poverty.

It may be mentioned that last year, as part of the IMF's initiative, Bangladesh also provided a grant of Tk 8 crore to alleviate poverty in Somalia.

.
so that's roughly 7.66 million USD. Loans to srilanka , debt relief to Sudan frankly speaking, what's the Gov's strategy here ?

We are becoming regional power I think. Regional powers should be responsible for others.

Global leader like China has much more responsibility though.

Without it you can't be leader or can't have an honorable position in Global empire.

I think IMF basically arm twisted BD into donating given that we have been long standing recipients of aid and are now in a better monetary position.

Just like training organisations have "train the trainer" initiatives to produce more trainers, IMF probably has an initiative through which they ask the poorest countries to "beg the beggar".

Maybe BD should hire PDF clowns to represent us at the IMF where they would scream "BD SLAVVV!!" , "BD gEoPoLiTiCaLlY iNsIgNiFICaNT!!", etc. in order to dissuade IMF from forcing BD to donate/lend again.

Ignore the children who cry BD GEOPOLITICALLY INSIGNIFICANT , those statements come from people who’s nations have been either used by the Americans and now in debt to China or from nations whos being used by America to counter China cause mf can’t handle China alone

Sudan’s Debt Relief: Bangladesh donates $7.7m

Star Report

Bangladesh on Tuesday provided about $7.7 million to Sudan, which is rebuilding its $30 billion battered economy from years of corruption and sanctions.

In December last year, the US, after almost three decades, removed the African nation from the state sponsor of terrorism list, a move that is helping the African nation access much-needed debt relief, multilateral lending and western investment.

Soon after, Sudan opened talks with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to write off $60 billion in debts.

The help from Bangladesh came as part of the IMF's debt relief plan for Sudan, where a rise in food and fuel prices in 2019 sparked off street protests that went on to topple the three-decade-long dictatorship of Omar Al-Bashir.

The US put Sudan on the list in 1993 when Bashir's regime was hosting Osama bin Laden in Khartoum.

The Bangladesh government donated Tk 65 crore, equivalent to an SDR (Special Drawing Rights) of 5.3 million, to Sudan, according to a finance ministry press release.

SDR refers to an international type of monetary reserve currency created by the IMF in 1969 as a supplement to the existing money reserves of the member countries.

Last year, following a similar IMF initiative, Bangladesh provided Tk 8.2 crore, which is equivalent to an SDR of 0.7 million, to Somalia.

Bangladesh's helping hand to Sudan comes hot on the heels of its $250 million currency swap agreement with Sri Lanka to replenish the island nation's fast-depleting foreign reserve and ease pressure on its exchange rate.

"Before, we took on loans. Now, we have the capacity to lend," Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters following a meeting of the cabinet committee on purchase yesterday.

The purpose of providing the loan to Sri Lanka was to build a relationship with the country and also get a good return, he said.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka is expected to return the amount to Bangladesh in three months at the interest rate of LIBOR + 2 percent. If the tenure goes up to six months, the interest rate would be LIBOR + 2.5 percent.

LIBOR, the acronym for London Interbank Offer Rate, is the global reference rate for unsecured short-term borrowing in the interbank market and acts as a benchmark for short-term interest rates.

This week, the three-month LIBOR is 0.13 percent and 0.15 percent.

At present, all of Bangladesh Bank's investments pay less than 1 percent of interest.

''আন্তর্জাতিক মুদ্রা তহবিলের(আইএমএফ) অনুরোধে '' yeah i'm sure IMF ''requested'' BD very nicely.

SL asked from india to get a loan but got no response. BD put 2% interest( which is high by lending standards) and they have to repay it within i think 3 months. Maybe BD can become a third source of loans in South Asia after China and india.
SL aslo supported the Rohingya genocide in UN by voting in favour of Burma so that's something to keep in mind next time BD lends money to SL.

But seriously though , Bangladesh if it even cared about itself becoming technologically developed could spread it's influence in Africa through exports and political control to gather more resources.

Or does that sound like the CCP or something lol

Moja pailam.

I think this maybe my new handle, " BD SLAVVV!! "

Could work in a social situation too - women have a lot of sympathy for "SLAVVVs"...

Very good strategy. Look at what we did in South Sudan and Congo with our Military.

What country in Africa made Bengali their official second language? This kind of goodwill definitely helps.

Well lending money is good leverage to change policies and stances....
